As someone who remembers seeing Star Wars (several times) in 1977, I can say it was a magical era. The closest thing to a big summer movie event before it was Jaws, but Star Wars really changed movie history and paved the way for hundreds of sci-fi and superhero movies to follow. I don’t think the cultural impact of Star Wars can really be appreciated unless you were there. Radio stations used to play the theme music like it was any other hit song!
Remember, there were like 3 Star Wars songs on pop radio. A long movie version by John Williams , a shorter radio version of the same, and Meco's disco Star Wars theme.
I met Peter Mayhew at a convention in Dallas before his passing. That man was the sweetest person I’ve ever met.
We did as well and you are right about being so sweet. It was funny how we stumbled onto him. No huge lines, just a small empty table as he was taking a bathroom break. All of a sudden he is there and I am like whoa, Peter Mayhew!!! My son was like 12 at the time and Peter talked with him for like 10 minutes, explaining how Chewie got his roar and sounds for speech. He was such an amazing and down to earth guy.

I was 8 when this came out. Our teacher was so impressed with the movie that he took the entire class to the matinee! I have no words!

I'm in this documentary! 2:30-2:33 here, queueing-up outside the Dominion Theatre in London in 1983 in my homemade cosplay Han Solo outfit. It was the Star Wars Triple Bill, the night before Return Of The Jedi opened - the first time all three movies had been shown theatrically together.
I remember seeing this back in 2004 just weeks after a movie I co-wrote (Hellboy) opened, and my jaw dropped.

I was 9 in ‘77. Saw it at the drive-in. I remember it was a clear and warm night. The anticipation was hard to contain as the sun had set and the last bit of light was fading away.
You went from avoidance to being one of us. Lol!!!!! I didn't want to see it either as a kid. I thought it was gonna be another Flash Gordon. My mom saw it before me. She came home and said, "Son, you are going to LOVE this movie. You should REALLY see it." She took me the next week to see it. I was 10 years old and lost my mind. Lol!! The Force will be with you...always.

This kind of material is a perfect showcase of your style of reactions, Coby. This is a very enjoyable watch.
I saw all three films in theatres when they came out. It was unlike any other cinematic experience I have had before or since. Star Wars, Jaws and Raiders of the Lost Ark made me fall in love with movies.
I saw Star Wars the day it came out. I liked it, saw it three times, went as Darth Vader as Halloween, but I wasn't nearly as blown away as all that. "Close Encounters", which came out six months later, blew my mind ten thousand times more than "Star Wars" ever did. And the vibe of the audience after "Close Encounters" was as if we had just stepped off the mothership ourselves, totally stoned on the experience. "Star Wars" was just a bunch of kids and their parents watching a good guy/bad guy adventure story. It was cool looking and fun but it was hardly a new teaching. I mean, I watched Star Trek every night, it's not like Lucas invented the idea of space adventure in the 70s. It's a good movie, but the over-hyperbolic b.s. is embarrassing. If I made a list of my favorite movies from 1977, Star Wars wouldn't be on it, and it wouldn't have even been on it if you had asked me in 1979! The marketing of it made me want to puke, and that theme. Bill Murray singing lyrics to the theme says it best: "Star Waaaaars.....nothing but Staaaar Wars!" lol. If you had told me back in 1978 or 1979 that people would still be going crazy over this movie, I would have laughed. It's too bad, I feel robbed because I love "American Graffiti" so much, and like "Star Wars", I would have been interested to see what Lucas would have done if he had to actually work for a living! 🤣
Crazy fact: The Empire Strikes Back novel was released on April 12, 1980 and it had the twist about Vader being Luke’s father. The movie was released on May 21, so that’s almost 6 weeks the novel was out that anyone could have blabbed the twist. Yet when we all saw Empire in 1980, nobody knew of the twist. It was a different world before the internet and social media.
Nobody read in the 80s either lol

@popcornroulettereactions Coby it's so beautiful to see how much you appreciate all the hard work and visions of all the artists involved in Star Wars, probably due to experience within the acting industry, so much talent from George Lucas to all the incredible artists at ILM and such bunch of the most talented artists in every department no weak links they're so many stories of what true film making and guts of risk of losing it all if his dream failed but with so much hard work that often gets over looked to the success of Star Wars. This is so true. I actually read the book during those six weeks. Audiences today don't even realize one of the other surprise reveals in the film. Yoda is so well-known today that no one realizes that audiences at the time thought he was just a crazy creature in the swamp until Obi Wan starts talking with him later in Yoda's home..
I remember like it was yesterday waiting in line for the first Star Wars. I was 10. After that, my brothers and I probably watched it 10 more times in theaters around Houston.
I saw "A New Hope" in 1977 at a drive in theater with my Father. I was 6 years old, and I had convinced myself I had the force. I would try and use the force to move things around my bedroom, obviously with poor results. As a 32 year old I took my 5 year old son to see the beginning of the second trilogy. That night when I went in to say his prayers, he was trying to use the force to move things in his bedroom. A fantastical generational connection. Special memories. Thank you, George Lucas.

His name is C-3PO. When it's written, they sometimes spell it "Threepio" so that you know how it's intended to be said. I think it makes it was to help the actors and the audience connect with a character whose name is just a serial number.
Easily one of my favorite documentaries of all time. I've probably seen it more than the original trilogy itself.
To be fair, the amount of documentaries you've watched is probably about 2. lol.

In the commentary for The Empire Strikes Back, director Irwin Kershner said that when he and the other actors saw the movie at the premiere, when Darth Vader revealed to Luke that he is his father, David Prowse turned to Kerchner and said to him "Why didn't you tell me? I've could done it better!" refering to his acting. If you ask me, it was perfect as it is, I bet Prowse couldn't have done it better even if he DID knew.
Back when I was in high school, I made myself a Blue Harvest t-shirt in printing class. People were always asking me what "Blue Harvest" was.

Coby, you got it. You can't imagine when that first shot of the Star Destroyer comes over the screen chasing the rebel ship, how mind blowing that was- it was when we all buckled in for a ride we knew we had never seen before.
Absolutely, I was 16 when Star Wars came out, and that opening shot, where the camera pans down onto the planet blew me away. Then the first ship flew overhead, and I lost it. THEN the star destroyer flew overhead... I was hooked from that moment on. I don't think folks who weren't around at the time can appreciate just how earth-shattering this was for us.

Prior to being cast as space-pilot Han Solo in the Star Wars blockbuster, Harrison Ford was a carpenter by trade to support his family. He'd only had a few small, some uncredited roles prior to Star Wars. Self-taught, he learned his craft from books borrowed from the local Encino library. Infact, Harrison Ford was hired for Star Wars early on by George Lucas - as a Stage, Sets Carpenter.., & would "stand in" for reading lines thru with the Cast auditions.., the rest is History !! :) - SO ' an unknown... ? ' - they weren't wrong :) Hard to believe it now, with all his AMAZING work
Harrison Ford ,during his carpenter years, build legendary musician Sergio Mendes a recording studio.
A Fun Fact-One of Lucas' influences was Akira Kurosawa's movie Hidden Fortress. There is two characters that act like C3P0 and R2D2 and a Princes like Leia. Lucas is a fan of Kurosawa and he and Spielberg helped finance some of his later movies. Kurosawa is also a fan of John Ford westerns which influenced his Samurai movies. His film Yojimbo influenced Fist Full of Dollars and his film The Seven Samurai influenced The Magnificent Seven. It is interesting how influences bounce around were you least expect.
"Intertextuality" refers to the phenomenon of one text referencing, quoting, or alluding to another text! ^_^
Kenny Baker, he is a great guy. I had the opportunity to hang out with him and his wife at Comic Con one year. My friends and I were waiting for Ted Raimi to arrive at his table, which he was like an hour late. Kenny came up to us, and asked who we were waiting for. We told him and then he said mind if I sit down and talk with you. I was shocked and we talked for about 30 minutes. I told him how much I loved him in Time Bandits and of course, Star Wars. He had his wife come by and chatted with her as well.
Damn I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone react to this documentary. It’s so so good and now you are a true Star Wars Nerd.

You have to watch episodes 1-3 now it's because of those films we have digital cameras today! George revolutionized film again!
Don't raise her expectations, those films are crap especially the first one, discussion about trade negotiations, she'll be put to sleep.
My only complaint with this doc. is that it ignores the influence of Akira Kurosawa. The original story borrows heavily from Kurosawa’s “Hidden Fortress.” Also, Lucas’ first choice for Obi Wan was Toshiro Mifune who starred in several Kurosawa movies.
I love Alec Guinness but Toshiro Mifune would have been next level as Obi Wan 🤯

I can remember seeing it for the first time in 1977 at the age of seven. It was mind-blowing and like nothing I had seen before. Was so excited when The Empire Strikes Back came out. Now I'm 53 and have it all on Blu-ray I've lost count of how many times I have watched it. So cool to see your reaction and the excitement. Looking forward to your reactions to the prequels.

Star Wars allowed a resurgence of Star Trek as the ability to more successfully realize space travel on film grew. Paramount had begun to capitalize on this, so when Lucas needed a new home, it wasn't a surprise as they were already 'in the game'.
I LOVE that you watched this documentary.... so few people fully appreciate how star wars very much pioneered stuff in the movie industry.
I just realized that Coby is an real actress, that explains why she is so natural and charismatic in front of an camera. One of the best reactors, may the force be with you Coby!

The original trilogy, before the Special Editions, still stands as one of the most hard working and incredible productions in the history of entertainment.
I had just graduated from HS a few weeks before SW came out on May 25, 1977. In the theater that I saw it at everyone stood up and gave rousing applause for about a minute and then stayed for the 5 minutes or so of the credits. George was penalized by the tyrannical Hollywierd system for not following their rules, You will enjoy watching the prequels.
The first and only person that i stumbled upon reacting to Empire of Dreams. I've never seen anyone reacting to this gem of a documentary.
As a kid it was a thing to go to the matinee to see Star Wars over and over again. I saw it in the theatre 12 times.

The fact you are dropping quotes from the likes of Yoda, etc. shows that you DEFINITELY are in deep now😁.
I'm glad that you watched this documentary. I doubt that many new fans would go to the trouble, but you are waaay invested in this franchise now, so it makes perfect sense.
Once you watch the Prequels, there is yet ANOTHER documentary like this one that covers those films. I'm pretty sure you'll love it as much as this one.
It's such a HUGE cinematic "universe" that I think you'll be blissfully occupied, taking in all that content. It'll be the best thing you've ever done for yourself!

I totally remember when this hit theatres back in 77, I was a happy 9 year old , but couldn’t see it for over a month because it was sold out at every theatre in the city. Fun times.

13:18 "I wonder where all this stuff is" - you could see most of it in the O2 Gallery in London in 2017. I teared up standing face to face with the original Yoda Puppet.
Coby shrieks in excitement over audition tapes! Simply the most authentic reactor who also happens to be a SAG member that has a film coming out fairly soon! Her reactions therefore come from someone who is in the business and who has a love of film making and the whole process. Somehow that makes her opinion carry more weight for me. She knows things like Modesto, basically a sleepy part of CA mostly consisting of agriculture. George was super smart by taking a cut of toy sales and other merchandising. The fact that they filmed the whole film with a voice over for the final cuts made everything different and better. All the artwork was so important also. We still culturally celebrate this mans singular vision!
I first saw Star wars as a young six year old , mega impressionable kid, like shown in this (yes I'm old ...ha ha)
My first grade birthday party was all Star Wars, complete with my uncle dressed as vader and bringing some of my classmates to tears

I was 13 Years old in 1977 when I saw Star Wars. It was incredible seeing it in the Movie Theatre. I had never seen anything like it before, The Special effects were ahead of its time,

Thank you for reacting to "Empire of Dreams"! Most other channels skip it. I remember when it first came out. It was for the longest and deepest documentary about Star Wars. A few years ago Disney+ debuted a 5-6 episode docu-series about Industrial Light & Magic called "Light & Magic". It talks about Star Wars and many of the other franchises it's produced.
Anyone that gets as hyped as you did during this reaction is truly a fan. Welcome.

Its sad to me that the original release versions are so rare to come by. So many people just assume "well, no wonder it looks so great, they redid it". Yes, the Special Editions did cleanup the images a bit, but for the most part, the original creativity of the special effects are original. The added stuff are just more background or to the sides, like extras on the set, and really didn't effect the original scenes in focus that most of us, your 40+ audience, remember it. So it's sad that so many have that "water down reaction" to the effects. They don't realized that you still see how great the original artists and technicians work is that is in these original movies and not all overwritten by modern CGI. I really wish Lucas would release the original edits so people can see without assuming it was all over written. I think I still have my original VHS versions tucked away in a box in storage. No longer have a working VHS player, but maybe some day I'll find a way to see these again. ... Edit ... Also wanted to add, there are better documentary's on the original effects out there. I remember one I watched years ago where they talked a lot more on the flying scenes with the blue screen and scaled models with the camera trickery to make it looks sooooo good.

This documentary is amazing!! It makes you appreciate how much hard work went into making this timeless franchise. In the 1970's, special effects were primitive compared to today, but to push the limits of film effects back then was not nearly as common as people see today. I love seeing how things are made and this documentary did not disappoint!! Great reaction and appreciation for this content, Coby! May the 4th be with you. 😊

Please do watch the prequels. There are issues with them for some people, but it's the backstory that fills in some of the "how'd they get there?" moments, and is something that I believe you will truly enjoy. The rest of what George did theatrically before Disney...

I would love to say that I saw Star Wars in the theater when it first came out (I was 32 years old at the time) but my wife was pregnant and was due some time during the summer of 1977 and I felt like I couldn't leave her alone. But my son was born in August and 3 years later I took him to see Empire when it first came out. As we drove by the theater my 3 year old son saw the poster and blurted out "Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back Collection from Kenner!" I laughed so hard I almost had a wreck! I always enjoy your videos . Take care!
So glad you’re enthralled by this, it’s one of my favorite behind the scenes documentaries. If you need more, I’d highly recommend Light and Magic, the series on Disney+ about the history of Industrial Light & Magic, as well as the Making of Jurassic Park and all the special features on the extended cut of Lord of the Rings.

After each of the original trilogy movies came out, there was a "making of" special on TV, focused on the special effects, stunts, and shooting. That's all we had to hold us over until the next movie came out 3 years later. VCR's and movie rental stores didn't become common until a few years after Return of The Jedi was released. They did the same for Raiders of The Lost Ark, I can't remember if they did the same for the other two Indiana Jones movies.

I got in1977 and still have the Kenner, Star Wars Pre-release toys figures and the stand used to display them.

Since you’ve seen the originals now, episodes 4, 5 and 6, you should seriously consider going to the theater this weekend and seeing Episode 1 of it’s in a theater near you. This is a great chance for you to see how Anakin becomes Darth Vader and to watch one of these films on the big screen! I’ve enjoyed watching how excited you’ve gotten over each of these films. They’re the best!!
This was really a cool idea for a reaction, hopefully there will be more opportunities for things like this. Coby is always so good at being totally invested in the movie, here she gets a chance to nerd out a little bit more about the process of filmmaking, like I nerd out about music. And yes, getting John Williams to score your film was an absolute coup.

I LOVE this documentary, and im super excited to see you watching it. It tskes me back to my childhood.
One of the most influential aspects in this is that George invented the "used future."That map is real Gary. When Epmress Helena showed up there was a dry well and looted tombs and that's it Gary, Origen said he had no idea where Nazareth was when he wrote that in Caeserea 40 miles from where it now stands Gary. The OT does not mention it Gary. No Jew ever wrote a word about it Gary. And its was a city Gary. Luke is quite clear. s and vehicles that looked like the space equivalent of a beat up farm truck or beat down semi-truck. A wolrd of the future with frayed clothes and equipment that leaked oil. It fundamentally changed the genre. Everything before it was sterile and clean.

Well done, Coby! SO glad you watched this! This is a great documentary about the Original Trilogy, and you get to see some of the original effects that have been removed from the "Special" (current) editions. IIRC, there is also a documentary about how the Special Editions were made, but I can't remember what it was called.
I also hope that you take on the movie "Fanboys" when you get a chance. "It's A Primate" watched it about a year ago, and he thought it was a fantastic companion piece to the Star Wars universe. Also, George Lucas was asked for his permission to make the movie, and he gave his blessings. Also, Fanboys can be watched prior to the Prequels (but after the OT) because it doesn't give any spoilers for the PT at all. Unless you count a character name or two.
It's a good movie, full of Star Wars references (from the OT), a few 1980s references (as a general whole), a "Jay and Silent Bob" cameo, and more than a few surprises that I won't detail at all. But I promise you will enjoy them.
I have access to the Theatrical Releases of the Original Trilogy, so when I do a Star Wars marathon, I start with those, then watch Fanboys, then start with Episode I and go chronologically from there.
However, in a month, a new series debuts called "The Acolyte", which takes place about 100 years before Episode I.... so that's going to change my chronology a bit. But it looks good, so I'm "all in" and excited for it.

OH, while I think of it, Coby..... first off, the posters being sold were not $175 dollars... but $1.75... one Dollar and seventy-five cents. I had the first run of the comic books priced at $0.30 per issue, although the price was raised to $0.35 per issue in later printings. To this day, I still have my copy of the Star Wars novelization, which was, when I got my copy, in its TENTH printing. Even before Star Wars hit theaters, there were definite signs that it was going to be an absolute HIT with the public. I was 10 when the movie hit theaters, so I was definitely in the target demographic. We couldn't WAIT until the toys hit the market, which took nearly a year before they actually did. It's funny when you think about it... no one had any faith in the movie becoming successful, let alone a "hit". Not even George Lucas. IIRC, he was in Hawaii when the movie released, and didn't learn of its success until he returned home to California.
Before Star Wars, there were, in fact, some "movie and TV show" related toys..... Planet of the Apes, Star Trek, the Six Million Dollar Man, G.I. Joe, etc... but they were kinda limited in their scope. Star Wars literally changed the game with that.
We had literally next to nothing in regards to Star Wars content at the time, which is why the Star Wars Holiday Special was created. You can find it on RUclips (despite George Lucas' best efforts to have every copy of that destroyed).... but I will warn you: Make sure you consume some "mild mind altering substances" before you watch it. Also, understand that "Variety Shows" were all the rage in the mid-late 1970s..... and the Holiday Special reflects that. It does have a really good cast (aside from the Star Wars regulars).... and at the time, we kids DID love it. However, watching it as an adult.... even as immature as I am..... was actually painful. It truly IS a product of its time.... and (VERY minor spoiler here) was considered to be "non-canon" until The Mandalorian decided to bring a part of it back into canon. I won't say what, how, or anything else.... just that I damned near fell out of my chair when the reference was made, because of what I knew it meant. The Star Wars Holiday Special is now canon.
It only aired on television one time in 1978, prior to the release of Empire Strikes Back, and George Lucas literally tried to confiscate every copy of it in existence, and have them destroyed.... and failed. It also featured the "on screen" debut of Boba Fett.
A few Reaction channels have done videos on it, so it wouldn't be "out of line" to do one yourself. However, remember what I said about "mild mind altering substances" (The Devil's Lettuce).... and watch it at your own risk.

I love how invested you are in star war. This doc is amazing and your reaction was a treat. And yes please please do episodes 1,2 and 3. They are great and my fav because they are my childhood.
I was nine when Star Wars came out. It was the most fantastic movie I had ever seen. Saw it three times at the movies. Collected all the Star Wars action figures and ships. It was a great time to be a kid.
I saw this documentary when it first came out. Saw it 3 times! Very good!!
I watched it first time in 1980 when I was 7. It was on the annual school cinema listing the following years also. Watched Jedi in 1983 when it opened and only after that, I finally got to watch Empire in 1984 I think, when a theater played the whole finished trilogy.

George, Star Wars, his creation of Pixar, and this documentary, were what made me want to get into filmmaking. Now, I'm no where near where if wanted to be a the end of my 20's; but I still have grand aspirations to start my own production company--in hopes to have full creative freedom, with my films someday, just like George.
There are actual in depth making of each movie and the prequals on here. I've watched a few they're soo good.
