The gym leaders in this gen ooze personality. But at the same time this battle here highlights the problem with bringing Pokemon to a major console without adding things like voice actors. They had an opportunity to show Piers as a kickass metal singer, but instead it's a silent foot-stomping embarassment.
frostyguy1989 To be fair I don’t think you necessarily need voice actors to give a feeling of character, I think everything about Piers’ gym speaks for itself quite well.
Yeah, this game really needed voice actors. The game's strongest points are it's presentation and characters, and both are hurt massively by the lack of VA despite that. It doesn't help that Masters came out recently and all the old characters have VA now, even if not in their OG games.
While i agree with you on that i have a feeling that bringing in voice acting to the pokemon community is gonna bring in a whole new set of problems. We already have a bunch of people shitting on the game(some doing so when they haven’t even played the game themselves). It might not be fun having more people hating on the game just complaining about the quality of the voice acting and whatnot
Downxos if they can't hire good VA then they deserve to be bashed on. They make millions off these games. It's not like this is a low budget game.

I think he’s my new favorite character. A respectable person who doesn’t need to dynamax to fight, has even shown Marnie how to Pokémon battle and he’s even modest that he’s not the best but puts up a challenge. Pier is truely someone to look up to.

@@greninjastorm Every Dark-type User is always the opposite in all honesty if you think of it. Nanu is a cop with wisdom & a badass. Grimsley was helpful in SM. Karen only wanted to see trainers grow, a lot of Dark-type specialists are actually great ppl in Pokemon

B Ricky nanu in the anime made fun of ash and mocked him intentionally to show him that he was far from prepared to challenge him
So Piers gets an unique Battle Theme since he is...indirectly "Team Yell" Leader...nice touch
To top it all not only is the first dark type gym leader if not that it gets his own theme, not even other important gym leaders get that honor like Cheren, Norman or Blue.
Now that's how you pay off 18 years of absence.

Not only that, but the battle theme sounds so Gen 1-2 but given a unique touch like Guzma..

This leader has my respect for not relying on that stupid Dynamax
He couldn't use it if he tried in his town. Spikemuth lacks a Power Spot, making Dynamaxing there impossible. Consequentially that also means the town doesn't get a lot of tourists...
@Merciless Freak apparently in universe he also seems to have bit of a resentment against dynamaxing and trainers who rely too much on it. Whether thats because of some backstory plot-point im not yet aware of or simple jealousy because the Spikemuth gym can't Dynamax is not know to me.

Spoilers for the post game
During the mission where you have to beat Pokémon that were forced to dynamax the dragon gym leader compliments him for winning without needing to dynamax his Pokémon and in the champion tournament he lost to the dragon gym leader but he still didn’t use dynamax and it was a close battle.
It's crazy that he is canonically the 2nd strongest Gym leader without the ability to Dynamax
Technically he is the strongest because he actually almost won Raihan who specifically only won thanks to dynamaxing, so if Piers would had used dynamaxing too or neither would had used it Piers would had won.
@@V-Jes Also Raihan is strong enough to become Champion of another region if he wanted to so that means Pires could also become a champion if he wanted

Merciless Freak Because there was never a dark gym leader in the games, only dark type specialists in the elite four. Nanu doesn’t count.

Merciless Freak Because every type EXCEPT DARK has a Gym Leader, even fairy which was introduced AFTER the Dark type in Kalos. The sheer fact they have a Dark type Gym Leader is a huge thing that breaks a lot of trends and in a good way.
@Merciless Freak it's because gamefreak is moving one step closer from dark meaning evil. Team yell wasn't very evil in themselves. Dark type gym signifies a new era on the traditional Japanese culture on gym design. Pretty cool imo

Roxie is the second gym leader in bw2. Her "song" is basicly spelling out "pokemon" or "dogas" in Japanese. In bw, there's a man singing in Village Bridge.

It says on his trainer's card that he tends to get riled up during battle and says his strategies out loud. But yeah, I liked that detail too. It's a nice touch

according to the champion cup result, piers is the strongest gym leader by default only weaker to raihan by a thread because raihan uses dynamax.

1. Hooray we now have a dark type gym leader (They did take their sweet damn time)
2. The Awkward Silence that is Piers’s marvelous singing voice (Try getting some VAs for Gen 9 at least)

I really like his personality and design. Although I think he would be twice as better with voice lines, especially since he's like a singer and all that.
The voiceless lines while the mouth moves, and we don't hear a damn thing other than his foot tapping reminded me of michael jackson, just less epic.
It's amazing how we can hear his steps but we can't hear his voice, hm.

I love the design oh the whole city and of the gym. And the theme! Wow

The design of Spikemuth seems to pay homage to side-scrolling beat-em-up video games like _Double Dragon_ and _Streets of Rage._ Complete with invisible walls (courtesy of Mr. Mime) and a neon “GO->” sign near the beginning.

It’s been 23 years.... but we finally got ourselves a Dark-type gym!
You'd think they have it in Unova (not when it first started, because there weren't that many), since American cities are just like the dark type Pokemon: corrupt, manipulative, and very misunderstood. But, putting a Dark type gym in a British themed generation and having it revolve around the dark side of British rock music is fine too.
Piers is everything I want in a dark type gym leader and more!
He’s a goth, but he’s not overly edgy that it gives out cringe. He uses dark type pokemon, but he’s not stereotypically evil nor a huge jerk like we normally portray dark type trainers. He is the “leader” of Gen 8’s “evil team”, but he actually has a very noble reason of why he created team yell over the fact that he wanted to create a supportive fan base for his l’il sis during her pokemon adventure
Piers truly shows that, just because you like to dress up like a punk, sing heavy metal, and use pokemon that are typically associated with evil doesn’t make you evil yourself
Personally, I had never thought of dark type pokemon as malicious, but rather morally ambiguous

Dark-type have a lot of good pokemon: Obstagoon, incineroar, grimmsnarl, hydreigon, pangoro and bisharp and have so good trainer: Nanu, Piers....

Trivia
1. Piers is the only Trainer who does not rely on Dynamaxing, let alone Gigantamaxing (if he did and if he wanted to, however, his Obstagoon would be able to Gigantamax).
2. Piers is the only Trainer who was absent from the Galar Tournament opening ceremony (Chairman Rose did not mention his name back then, which may imply there are some issues between them).
3. Piers is both the first Dark-type Pokémon Gym Leader, the Leader of Team Yell, and the second member of a Team that are not the true villains from their Regions (the first one being Guzma's Team Skull).
Am i the only one who watches these videos and does the back seat driver thing such as " oh why didnt you switch, you could defeated the pokemon in one turn come on!!!"

Our prayers have been answered for a dark type gym
Piers is my favorite one from these games not because he dresses all edgy or goth/emo, but because the way his philosophy is. He doesn’t care about “fancy” Dynamax/Gigantamax. He’s believes in simplicity and he doesn’t forget about where he comes from. He’s kind of like Itachi.

It's interesting how Piers is very humble about his Gym being small and him not being good Gym Leader, but he literally was first challenging Gym Leader (mostly because I didn't know about Throat Chop and used Wigglytuff against Obstagoon)

Music was pretty good during the cutscene before the battle, I'm becoming more impressed with this game the more I see of it!
Man they really should've gotten some voice actors for this game... some of these scenes are just painful to watch.

This is the big reason why I think they wanted to include voice-acting but decided to scrap it because it probably would've been too expensive and/or time consuming. That, the fact that people from Spikemuth have a unique accent, and all the British slang and accent humor. Even if they only did Japanese and English, even with unique characters (like gym leaders, Leon, Rose and Odelea, and the rivals), copy-pasted characters, and if several characters shared the same VA's, that'd still be at least 20 (all the gym leaders, Leon, Hop, Marnie, Bede, Rose, Odelia - I forgot her name, but I know it's something like that -, Nurse Joy, Sonia, Magnolia, the player's mom, and possibly the player character) different people just for one language. I know not all English VA's are awful, but at what point until we get Matt Mercer or Keith Silverstein voicing multiple characters in the same game? After a certain number, we're going to either start scraping or start re-using the A+ voice actors. And, that's just for English; foreign language voice actors start getting even more limited after a while.
