This works great if you happen to have reference images of the exact topology you want to end up with... which is only possible if the character you are modelling has already been modelled...
(13:46) you need to click on cage button when applying sub division. You showed this but I missed it because you didn't mention. This is how to correct vertices after applying subdivision.
Modelling didn't take me anywhere except for learning about topology.. the easy fast and satisfying method for me is to combine basic shapes with subdivision and solidify modifiers on.. then glue, booleans cleanup and etopo when necessary
My workflow is usually Blender or ZBrush for sculpt, alternativelly bashing together parts of the final design (this was the case when I was recreating WW2 Japanese fighter plane and needed it as one piece of geometry so there was a lot of transitions within the wireframe, especially near the wing area since the model had to be pretty high resolution - an absolute headache!) and then just retopo fresh geometry on top of it. It's maybe not the fastest solution but it gives good results.
I would like to say this is a great tutorial. I watch all your "episodes" before doing this and did notice it started to feel rushed in later "episodes". I will point out for future viewers that this tutorial failed to mention how important it is to line the ref images for the head with the "Z" (Blue) Line. Is it common to be able to use reference images with topology to follow? It seems like most of the time available reference images would be sketches or pictures of characters or people. In this case, would you start by making a low poly model like you did for the body and continue to refine the detail to get to the point that the reference image of the head that you use? I have no experience, so I am confused about this part.
@@StudioHannah I was thinking about this. Once you've done a few models, you can just use these topology references as a base to work on on future models, like a blue print. This one saves a lot of the trial and error to reach the point to be able to do that yourself. I'm not sure how much steam this kind of work flow has left though, as things like Metahuman exist now.
@@dreambadger Well, MetaHumans does exactly what it says. Makes highly realistic humans, but that's the limits to it. Very intuitive tut. I've seen some other too on RUclips, although not all. Clear speaking. Very understandable, even for someone like me who doesn't live in a country where english is the everyday language. Thanks alot.
A lot of people are praising this for being densely packed and getting right into it, yet I'm 13 minutes in and dozens of hot keys have been thrown at me, and yet all I've done is paste 2 reference images that are locked in place and I've deleted 3 things. This would have been a hell of a lot better if not so many hot keys were mentioned till another episode and you explained what the hell you were about to do and the small goals of each set of actions immediately before hand.
Bodies are fairly easiy to get a basic sculpt for when your getting a sculpting model. You just use a few cubes and resize them, and apply a subdivision surface modifier.
I was following the tutorial and everything was going smoothly until for whatever reason the z axis stopped matching in the top red area at 15:24 but yet it still matched in the bottom blue and red area. The references are at the same z height and i truly have no idea what's causing this mismatch. Any help is appreciated
This Tutorial is absoluetly perfect!!Just the part at 14:35 - idk what i did wrong but my dots in the middle dont connect like that at all. The faces still overlapp eachother
I was going to create my own character but after seeing this tutorial, I think ill just pay someone to create my character for me. My simple mind cant handle this info
This is a very helpful tutorial and seems simple but where can i find references like these? With the rings and everything, model sheets never include these
It is amazing tutorial, whoever wants to learn in easy should be watching this tutorial series. For my side, appreciate it. I hope you are gonna be very successful thanks again 😎
at 14:22 when you have to click all transforms the right side of the object stays in place but the left side that is mirrored detaches and moves to the right of the original right side of the face a couple meters from the original right side if that makes sense. Any idea why this may be happening???
I'm so new at this but I have an idea that I need help with....can I take a picture, change that into a anime or cartoon look like character and put it into blender? For example, take a picture of myself, and put that in as a model? Or would unreal engine be better suited?
Bro No fucking way did i just ACTUALLY learn something in the span of 2 minutes from you then i did in 50 minutes from a friend Damn, imma definitely have to continue this later today
i had to mirror this on the Y axis. I thought you were working the Front facing reference on NUM 1. I hope this isn't going to cause more headaches going forward. So far most differences i'm able to work through and find the answers. Had to go back to Object Mode to access Shade Smooth and All Transforms. Currently trying to figure out why the mirror disappears when i do All Transforms. Maybe the scale didn't apply properly, i'll go back and start over. My retry, It was Scale. I noticed when i went back to re-set up the all transform it didn't take! I did it a 3rd time and it finally set the numbers right. Things are working accurately. Silly software.
Wow, thank you so much for this video, I really dread creating humans in blender, but your giving me hope, I pray it goes well to the end if this series. Thank you aagain
Nice... But I can see from this video that you need a reference image made with 3D software. I can't imagine how you can get the flow lines image without 3D software. We have a recursion problem here.
Hi, this has been an amazing tutorial so far! I had some difficulty when I clicked all transforms though. I set the object's origin to geometry but the 2 sides are overlapping too much. Am I supposed to align the world origin to the match the symettry of the face or move the entire refs to match up with the world origin??
Glad it helped! in the object mode go with control a all transforms.. we reset the location rotation scale into default.. for the mirror modifier it's very important to reset the scale into default.. another important point that you need to turn on clipping in the mirror modifier so in this way you don't have overlapping vertices in the middle
Hi, thanks for tutorial, but I have a problem. When I use mirror modifier, it looks like in your video, BUT when I press Ctrl+A and then "All transforms", the mirrored part of the plane goes away, and is mirrored relative to the 3d cursor... Idk what to do:(
My object origin/center was way away from the actual geometry of the object, I moved the 3d cursor to where I wanted it (in tools - T) and then right clicked on the object and selected Set Origin - Origin to 3D cursor. If your placement is off you can keep selecting origin to 3d cursor. Hope that helps!
i have same issue but slightly different , once i add mirror modifier the two planes keep intersecting each other no difference even after applying all transform
Need help!!so I created the right side of the nose and added a mirror and then the I reset all transforms of the object (Ctrl-A / All Transforms) but then the mirrored part just goes way off the X axis like far away from the initial point.
great workflow im a blender fan but lazy to do blender . never miss pablo updates and downloaded all blender version yet too lazy to start. hope to try your workflow,as its easy and a no brainer. almost a cheat in a gray area.

@@beloooga_whale you're mirroring about the origin. If your reference image isn't perfectly centered, you wont be mirroring 1:1
hhhhh im still confused. i really wish i knew how to align the ref images correctly, and having bad depth perception really isn't helping me... ;-;
You are a God
very thorough and helpful however i am not very accurate with click and drag so if you could name the xyz positions for reference images it will be easier to follow along
God bless you..all I wanted just to create my character and I !ve been looking for such a wonderous education for a long time. And it is a well known point...its not enough to know it well,,to be able to explain what you have is much much more important..and finally I've found here exact solution.Gratitudes...I bow before your kindness and professionalism.
you're welcome
Thanks for getting straight to the point! no random banter·
Hi Leonel, please send the reference images of that tutorial to me at that Gmail account. Because the link does not work with me.
@@Sh_orts same here
@12:22 don't forget to use num pad 3 and num pad 1 when getting the plane to display on both sides of the image.
Thank you
@@vaishram315 no worries
Thank you but you don't know what you have done putting this video out. It all makes sense now thanks to you. I know what I must do and I have the strength to do it
Glad it helped
Great tutorial, bro. Your method is same as mine but I'd like to follow along how you do it just looking for useful techniques I might not be aware of. Looking forward to the next episode. Keep up the good work. Wish you all the best.
thank you
Wow..
Let men rephrase that..
WOW!
This IS the tutoral that waited yesr for.
I'm happy to read that thank you
Very intuitive tut.
I've seen some other too on RUclips, although not all.
Clear speaking. Very understandable, even for someone like me who doesn't live in a country where english is the everyday language.
Thanks alot.
I must be ready for this because the pacing seemed absolutely perfect. Sub'd.
❤
THANK YOU, SULTAN. YOU ARE AWESOME
This tutorial is really exceptional, I devour the series with attention, huge thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Hi Bernard, please send the reference images of that tutorial to me at that Gmail account. Because the link do not work with me.
A lot of people are praising this for being densely packed and getting right into it, yet I'm 13 minutes in and dozens of hot keys have been thrown at me, and yet all I've done is paste 2 reference images that are locked in place and I've deleted 3 things. This would have been a hell of a lot better if not so many hot keys were mentioned till another episode and you explained what the hell you were about to do and the small goals of each set of actions immediately before hand.
going to take my 3d modeling to the next level bros
This is top tier blender content
thank you
i officially created a channel by this comment. This beginners guide is a absolute life saver thank you :D
🔥🔥
very well done, your voice is so calming, really great tutorial!
Thank you so much!
Beginners? Well, if you are already an artist in drawing... I guess.. but you explained it pretty good. Thanks!
even though its frustrating me.. its fell like amazing to do this challenging task.
Bodies are fairly easiy to get a basic sculpt for when your getting a sculpting model. You just use a few cubes and resize them, and apply a subdivision surface modifier.
one of best character modelling tutorial in youtube.thx for sharing..keep following you.
no problem
Thank you very much!! this is so easy to understand and helpful for beginner like me :D
Best tutorial 👍🏻
I was following the tutorial and everything was going smoothly until for whatever reason the z axis stopped matching in the top red area at 15:24 but yet it still matched in the bottom blue and red area. The references are at the same z height and i truly have no idea what's causing this mismatch. Any help is appreciated
This Tutorial is absoluetly perfect!!Just the part at 14:35 - idk what i did wrong but my dots in the middle dont connect like that at all. The faces still overlapp eachother
im having the same issue, how did you fix it?
@@sarahreid-wright7414did you fix it?
Sir, I devote my life to you.
finaly i finde normal youtube chanel
14:20 why does the mirrored object go very far to the original one when i transform all? Sorry if i dont make sense, im a complete beginner
the same happens with me
Same here guys
I was going to create my own character but after seeing this tutorial, I think ill just pay someone to create my character for me. My simple mind cant handle this info
I sure hope you put a section in for the hair. its the part i struggle with
Hands down, doing the work of god.
This is a very helpful tutorial and seems simple but where can i find references like these? With the rings and everything, model sheets never include these
Nice tutorial but how did you obtain the reference head images?
It is amazing tutorial, whoever wants to learn in easy should be watching this tutorial series. For my side, appreciate it. I hope you are gonna be very successful thanks again 😎
Glad it was helpful!
Hi Ataberk, please send the reference images of that tutorial to me at that Gmail account. Because the link dose not work with me.
Great 🔥
This is great! I always feared modeling the head this way but you made it seem easy so far. I can't wait to finish this series.
Glad it was helpful!
at 14:22 when you have to click all transforms the right side of the object stays in place but the left side that is mirrored detaches and moves to the right of the original right side of the face a couple meters from the original right side if that makes sense. Any idea why this may be happening???
First video and he made the whole concept clear🔥🙌
😍
FINALLY, A TUTORIAL I CAN UNDERSTAND. THANK YOU SO MUCHHHHH!!!
No problem 😊
How do you make sure the defaults are set correctly when applying all transforms at 14:23?
I need help here too 😭
finally a video for real beginners , thank bro.
Glad it was helpful!
I'm so new at this but I have an idea that I need help with....can I take a picture, change that into a anime or cartoon look like character and put it into blender? For example, take a picture of myself, and put that in as a model? Or would unreal engine be better suited?
Why is this video not made when I was still in college?! lol.
Really good vid! Makes me want to touch blender again.
just keep trying and never give up
the Golden Key for successful is practicing

hello bro this is the most amazing blender video I've ever come across. I request you to please continue these kind of videos pleaseeeeeee
thank you
@@BlenderArt what about some more game ready character modelling tutorials
i had to mirror this on the Y axis.
Thank you this is sooooo helpful. I am just starting out and this is really helping me get aquainted with the controls.
Yooo what's Ur discord
I m just starting out aswell
Here I am at midnight looking at tutorials, coming back to this one to complete within the next week, here's hoping i do it right lol
I wish you the best
Wow, thank you so much for this video, I really dread creating humans in blender, but your giving me hope, I pray it goes well to the end if this series. Thank you aagain
❤
Change only the rotation and scale. don't reset the location
@@strikerron2252 Thanks bro, this one had me for a minute.
i just watch this video only 1.30min and already subcribe to your channel. you just make this tutorial look easy😁
Hi, thanks for tutorial, but I have a problem. When I use mirror modifier, it looks like in your video, BUT when I press Ctrl+A and then "All transforms", the mirrored part of the plane goes away, and is mirrored relative to the 3d cursor... Idk what to do:(
Hey, at 14:20, whenever i press All transforms, the two planes go far apart from eachother instead of still next to eachother. How do i fix this?
Any answers for this yet? I am having the same problem.
@@Sirbikingviking You have to reset only direction and rotation. Donot do it for location
@@Sirbikingviking it worked! thank you so much
Need help!!so I created the right side of the nose and added a mirror and then the I reset all transforms of the object (Ctrl-A / All Transforms) but then the mirrored part just goes way off the X axis like far away from the initial point.
Bro keep up the gd work ur doing a lot of help for game devs to make their own Character models

Wonderful Tutorial Video, for beginners, so i have an question when i using for example an another face or head, how i became The Edge flow Like in your Picture one The right side (7:08)
At 14:23 when you use All Transforms the mirror half of the plane moves on the x axis while the normal plane stays in place please help?
What a wonderful tutorial! Its easy to comprehend and has a nice balance of detailed and generalized, I wish more tutorials were like this...
Also, would you have any advice for adapting this for a male character?
this same can be implement to male character also
Wow amazing sir !!!
