So many genres are missing from this chart! Where's open world, 3rd person shooter, racing games, rhythm games, beat em ups, fighting games, sports games etc.?

Per the article - the genres selected in the chart are supposed to represent the genres that are most commonly made by indies. I do agree it would be nice to have data for these gernes too though.

As someone who’s recently made a successful online party game, it was interesting to see that genres placement on this graph. I had no idea!

That's interesting, what's the name of your game?

That graph is measured by sales so it should had excluded battle royale, when most battle royales rely on massive playerbases through free copies and make money from dlc/skins.
I think the information is useful, but if you don't like Sim or Deck games you likely can't create a good sim/deck game. I think you are much better off trying to make a game that is more aligned with your interests and climbing that uphill battle if it exists. This is also the same reason those genres do bad, they are people's first games and lots of those people don't even like that genre.

I absolutely agree, this should serve more as a general guide and I think the best approach is picking a genre out of those you personally enjoy that also happens to perform well on average. You're unlikely to finish making a game if you just picked it because of its popularity if you have no personal interest in it.
