    • @HoHhoch
      @HoHhoch 4 years ago +40

      @@adanua You wouldn't even need that. The game can just keep a list of numbers, with each number representing a cell type, and 0 being no cell in that square. It would literally just be a matter of copy pasting your "seed" to a forum.

    • @sodiboo
      @sodiboo 4 years ago +14

      That would be a lot of effort, however the game seems completely unobfuscated and there are plenty of helper methods, i'm currently working on a mod to implement something similar to this, though there would be no "download center" or anything, you would need to share the levels elsewhere
      Edit: I've mostly finished this mod i said i was working on now, and i've asked sam in twitter DMs for permission to share the mod (since the mod modifies the same files as "SmartFridgeGamer"s playground, which is just the code, but 99% of that code is sam's)

    Here's some tips for shading in pixel art in case anyone here wants to know:
    0: Shadows face away from the light(darker color), highlights face towards the light (lighter color) and midtones face towards the viewer (base color)
    0A: Hueshift the shadows towards purple or blue tones, and the highlights toward yellow tones. (exceptions being materials like gold)
    1: Every pixel counts! Make sure your lines look like what you intend them to do, and zoom out regularly to check the overall picture
    1A: Spare your highlights! Too much or too little can make your material look too different
    2: Start small, then work with bigger and bigger canvas sizes as you go along. You may even find a size you prefer!
    3: Limit your palette! Keep your colors few so you can make more creative decisions. You can even limit your palette to just two colors!
    3A: If you're not sure what colors to use, you can download a pre-determined palette on lospec.com/palette-list
    4: Use a very dark tone as black for your characters! That way they'll stand out more from the background
    4A: You can put a light-colored border around your characters if your palette doesn't have two different options for black

    A cool way to extend the life cycle of this game for "relatively" little effort is a map editor that exports level data as a string.
    Just give each cell a unique character and export it to a string row by row. then add a play button for custom levels that asks for a string input field.
    This way levels can be shared easily without much effort. Of course it's no guarantee they're playable from start to finish. But it's always a nice feature that's relatively easy to make.

    • @MrMoon-hy6pn

    I wish he’d add a creator mode to this so you could build anything using that engine.
    Edit: OMG 1.7k likes, that’s more likes than all my other comments put together!

      That'd be really cool! That'd be like Conway's game where you can make stuff. (What i mean is that you can create cool animations or machines or a glider thing)

    Being able to create your own levels and submit them for other people to play on this game could be a cool addition

    Idea, (I know the competition is already over but hear me out): A Sandbox mode for the players to create levels or just play around a little bit with the game.

      You can use pre-built items, or code your own.

    The ads you get are stolen, Sam Hogan doesn't have any ads that he owns so the ads you see are form someone who stole the game and is using it to get quick money

    Here’s a tip:
    If you put the pixels randomly, the block will look rough as sandpaper.
    If you put it in a ‘linear’ line so to speak, it will look smooth.
