  • Which video game has the best Sword and Shield / Sword 'n Board Gameplay?
    Games featured: Vermintide 2 (footage courtesy of Doug), Dragon's Dogma and Monster Hunter World: Iceborne. I recorded and made this before Dragon's Dogma 2 came out, obviously.

    Kingdom Come: Deliverance for me. I love the combat in that game through and through, but I prefer Sword and Board over everything else.

    This video made me so unreasonably happy 😅. I 100% agree with #1 and #2. Although those are interchangeable to me. I'm actually saving Fighter as one of my last vocations to play in DD2. I love that the SNS in MH is lefthanded. I guess Zelda would be my #3.

    Great topic for a video! I haven’t played enough to determine which game has the *best* sword&board mechanics, but I can tell you with absolute confidence that the Elder Scrolls combat mechanics are hands down the worst.
    I have never played clunkier, less satisfying combat in first person perspective.
    Every single encounter, multiple times during the fight, my inner monologue says ‘Did I hit him? Did that count as a hit? Wait-how did that hit me?’ Literally. Every. Single. Time. Melee combat in those games is an absolute joke.

      That's pretty much how I feel. No kinetic feedback. No spatial feedback. Goofy, stiff animations that are bad in FP and worse in TP

    I know I'll be crucified but I like how Skyrim's sword & board feels in first person? 😂 - especially with mods to change sound effects, change up speeds etc., like just spinning round and bringing down a charged axe down on a bandit and following it through, then spinning to bash another guy before you hack into them?
    -My dream for Skyrim 2 is that we'll get a similar feeling combat to something like Darktide?
    Like the level of depths-perception, visceralness, visual feedback (an axe's light attack doesn't slash through but stops embedded in a target before being pulled out to hack again) and the perceived tactile feedback (how the controller vibrates and the sound of a weapon creating a wet thud for an axe or a metallic liquidy shwing slashing with a sword is really what sells it for me.)
    ...I've never played Mordhau, Chivalry, Kingdom Come Deliverance, or Hellish Quart before but they seem pretty up there for melee combat too 🙏

      It's interesting how the games industry has come so far, yet still we're figuring out how to simulate really good-feeling, deep, but fun melee in games? - Maybe perfect melee combat will never exist, but we will see 🙏

    I think MH’s Charge Blade is far and away the best sword + shield experience. The counter-heavy, precise playstyle and high skill ceiling of the weapon is unmatched in my opinion. Like you said, SnS feels more like using 2 weapons, but I don’t think it really captures the essence of using two different parts of a unique whole.

    • @SilverMont
      @SilverMont  2 месяца назад

      Hmm, that's fair! It's cool, the charge blade, but I do think I prefer the working in tandem approach, personally. On the topic of transformation weapons, I love the switch axe! That move where you just kinda attach to the monster and explode it 500 times is awesome

      I don't think souls sword and shield is all that good as the shield is underutilised. The games are good but they also really underutilised my favourite weapons - spears.

    • @tbhUSuckOo
      @tbhUSuckOo 2 месяца назад

      @@SilverMont In elden ring you can put many different enchants and skills on the shield. You can do different parries, blocks, bashes. Backstep parries tech or sprint block tech to skip animations. You can even make it poison enemies, shoot cannonballs, reflect spells. Whats the big different with these games then?
      Underutilised in the sense of popularity is not really an argument for viability no?
      As for the spears thing. Double spear setup is one of the most popular and damaging combos in the game so i dont really know what you're talking about.
