    Thanks for the video. I shall continue discussing the CATRA testing on the other channel, but wondered if you had a larger test anvil and shims?

    • @jcoolG192
      @jcoolG192  5 лет назад +1

      I have lots of anvils. I don't have shims for testing blades. The problem with shimming a pocket knife blade is that there are two angles to account for. The angle of the primary grind, and the distal taper. To get somewhat accurate readings, you would have to make shims for every blade. Now imagine what a proper shim for a hollow grind would look like.

    • @TacticalReviews
      @TacticalReviews 5 лет назад

      @@jcoolG192 Agreed, basically a hollow grind could not be tested full stop, as not only would you have to shim it, but then ensure you get the indenter at the perfect low point of the hollow - no way. I could only conceive testing on a flat grind at all, and only if there was a way to shim/support/hold the flat perfectly level as presented to the indenter.
      What we don't know is if CATRA have a way to do this with some special support or jig, or temporary resin block applied to the back of the blade with the flat perfectly flat.
      (I used to do this for material testing at university, casting resin support blocks onto samples)

    • @jcoolG192
      @jcoolG192  5 лет назад +1

      @@TacticalReviews it's possible, but according to ASTM, your anvils or any other direct support, like shims, have to be a minimum of 58 HRC. I can't think of any resins that get hard enough. If it was a true flat grind, with zero curvature in the primary or distal angles, you could use a small compound sine plate on a large anvil. It's not ideal but it would give you a ballpark number. From the reply they sent Alchemy 1, they used shims and a bubble level. That's not promising.

    I supported the Catra movement becuz I thought it would validate the testing that gets done. Believe the step was necessary and there are many lessons to be learned. Disagreements are part of life and that's just how the cookie crumbles. How the road led to catra actually bothers me more than the lackluster tests themselves. Defend your beliefs with open mind not an Iron fist. Truly believe folks like Alchemy1 tried to be the bigger man and embrace these disagreements with maturity. Maybe I grew up in a different era but disabling comments and hiding from those with different views than mine are acts of a Coward. I think that sets a bad example to the young folks to hide behind their moral high ground. Life is too short to argue about some dude cutting cardboard by his kitchen sink.

    Kurt good video!! Great information!! Who ever sharpens the knives for catra literally must be blind!! The edge bevel inconsistency is horrendous not to mention the edge itself!! 🤮🤮 To me catra is a waste of time and money and is pure trash 🗑. Thanks for doing all this awesome work brother it’s much appreciated!!👊👊👊

    Great video! I agree 100%.. catra is a joke. It's sad people actually payed so much money only to find out that the testing our heroes do is much more reliable.. and they do it for free.. and it's actually done by people who know knives, knife steel, how to sharpen, and how to eliminate variables. I feel blessed that I got into knives at the most perfect timing to do so.. at the time we can actually reliably know what we are spending our money on. I started with ganzo d2.. when LTK review them and they were tested at 62hrc.. but then moved on to manly.. and now spyderco in maxamet.. I would have never considered buying these if I did not have the opportunity to see what they can do. So knife companys are indebted to these people because they are advertising their knives in a better way then the companys themselves do it. When you buy a car you know the horsepower, 0-60, the max speed etc.. when you buy a knife you know nothing about actuall performance if there were no our testing heroes.. I think knife companies need to rethink how they sell their product.. and include a bit more specs than size and weight. Spyderco seems like someone who could make this leap and be above and beyond all others.. start a knew era.. revolution that tells you not only the cutting performance of the product you are buying, but strength and toughness data also.

      Thank you! It is a great time to be into knives. Those guys put a lot of work into those tests and the videos. The fact that their results are repeatable is proof enough for me.

  • @overlandedc

    Great example of how to properly test Rockwell. Catra really did themselves a disservice by doing such a poor job on these tests. They literally butchered the knives I sent it. Hoping they can be salvaged but I believe they are on the way to Outpost 76 for testing.

    • @jcoolG192
      @jcoolG192  5 лет назад

      Thank you! Thanks for sending them to CATRA, too. The test itself is pretty simple. There are some rules to follow, but it really isn't as complicated as some try to portray. The knives are on there way to me for testing. I'm also going to put them on a comparator and measure the secondary angles. Then off to G...he will make them better than new! No worries there! 😉
