    Hello. I hear your points, especially the one that Etsy cannot survive on handmade. Now, the huge pink elephant in the room is the fact that Etsy’s ads on tv are trying to attract buyers that are looking for unique, one of a kind, handmade gifts. Meanwhile, they keep allowing the junk to flow because it sells and keeps the marketplace afloat. Hypocrisy at its finest.

    The current CEO has been in his job for 8 years, so Etsy's problems now are on him not the previous guy. We are not in a bear market for stocks, either. If you think he's doing a great job, by all means buy stock in a company whose stock price has gone from $300 in 2021 to barely $60 today.

      I was referring to the bear market that was talked about in the video. Which is about several quarters of Etsy when they went public. The current bear market reflects to the overall economy, other e-commerce websites, and companies show very similar stock charts, you can’t attribute that to just one person.

    It is obvious that handmade production limits output and is not cost-effective if the return is not feasible. Etsy allows resellers, which changes the very nature of handmade products. It's just an illusion. For instance, what you do for dog products is not handmade. You personalize or customize the product, but it is not handmade.
    The question is whether handmade products are really profitable. It seems not. People are looking for surplus, which is normal, but we should name it correctly. We should not fool ourselves and call it handmade. Handmade is not just a label; it's an entirely different approach. As you said, it is not profitable, but Etsy should be transparent about it. It is not a handmade platform anymore. It could still be one if resellers were placed in a separate subdomain, like on Amazon. That way, you get the profit.
    That's the problem. Other than that, you are right. However, using industrial machines instead of homemade ones results in a more professional and better product, but it is not handmade anymore. If I were to buy a product like a dog collar, I would buy one of yours.
    Whether handmade items are valuable is another discussion. It may be nonsense, but the distinction should be clear. Perhaps the degree of handmade production or the number of people involved should be transparent. For example, labeling something as 60% handmade. The number of workers for instance should be specified other than production partner.

    • @thetalkshop
      @thetalkshop  Месяц назад +3

      I totally agree, and personally, I think at some point Etsy will stop using the word handmade. I think Etsy’s power is custom and unique goods
      Tailored to each individual buyers. With my dog collars, I not only print the fabric, but I also use sewing machines to make the straps, the major difference with my machine is, there’s a custom attachment. And at the end of the process, I use an automated tag machine. But if we’re being technical, a simple, sewing machine, it’s technically an automated system of threading. So it’s really hard to really defined the line of hand made.

      IMO...he IS a handmade business. That's coming from someone who makes handmade products using tools to turn items into a sellable item made by me. He was just smart enough and savvy enough to grow his handmade business by using bigger and harder to learn tools to make his products to meet the demand for a better quality product.

    • @ilkbaharkunduzu1
      @ilkbaharkunduzu1 Месяц назад +2

      @@mistitrimble3334 That is the problem, actually. Simply saying that his products are not handmade is insane considering their quality and the effort it takes to produce them. The issue is that the nature of the product is not handmade, and it is not supposed to be. Handmade as a concept doesn’t exist anymore in its traditional form. We should use different terminology and perhaps mention the percentage of handmade work involved.
      He is a one-man army who knows a lot about industrial machines and uses them to design the product from start to finish. I really salute him for that. However, this is a problem. When someone buys some beads and creates a bracelet, we call it handmade. It is not actually handmade; it is hand-assembled. Many of the dog collars this guy creates are closer to handmade products than those hand-assembled ones.
      This guy is not just using fabric. He is creating the design and print on it, cutting it, sewing it, and also creating customization. Those products deserve more respect than many so-called handmade products.
      Quite frankly, handmade is a kind of spoiled word these days and not realistic given today's living standards. Let's say you produce a dog collar by yourself using old machines or traditional techniques. Instead of printing, you hand-embroider the fabric and hand-sew it. You use brass parts and create customizations on the brass, similar to how they engrave steel knives instead of using a laser machine.
      Is this a business or just an art form because you want to sell it? How will you do that, and how sustainable will it be? If you do this and want to charge $100 for one product, you’re lucky if you can pay your rent. Don’t cry when people don’t buy it. And don’t forget that while it may be handmade, that doesn’t guarantee it will be a beautiful product. Just because it is handmade does not mean it deserves that price. Maybe you are just wasting your resources, like the time you dedicate to production.
      Not every handmade product becomes a collectible item or will be called an antique. It should be created by a top-notch master, and maybe you are not that person. However, machines in terms of sewing quality and laser engraving create that high-quality work. If you are not producing work close to that level of beauty as a handmade designer and maker, don’t do it or don’t cry if people do not want to buy your products. and considering the economy in today's world, cheaper but quality items will be in demand.

      @@thetalkshop The truth is that the new Etsy has made it increasingly difficult to operate a successful business by creating “Unique” or “Handmade” products as they advertise. Like you say in your video, you need to sell what people want. Just find a popular product, quickly copy it while it’s hot and try to sell it cheaper if you can. That means zero originality and ends up being mass produced junk from Alibaba that’s laser engraved or a print on demand service with artwork that’s not even yours. If Etsy actually had any integrity in delivering handmade instead of chasing quick profits, they’d enforce IP, limit “production partners”, and not squeeze their sellers with enormous fees, advertising, and free shipping.

    It's important to understand the distinction between the tools used in crafting and the craftsmanship itself. Criticizing a small shop for not being "handmade" because they use sewing machines and printing equipment might stem from a misunderstanding of what constitutes artisan work versus mass production.
    Artisan craftsmanship is defined by the skill, creativity, and personal touch that the craftsperson brings to each piece. Whether they use their hands, a sewing machine, or other equipment, the key element is the artisan’s expertise and attention to detail. These tools do not diminish the artistry involved; instead, they often enhance the precision and quality of the work, allowing artisans to bring their creative visions to life more effectively.
    Handcrafting refers to the process of creating items by hand, but it doesn’t necessarily mean the complete absence of tools. Historically, artisans have always used tools to assist in their work, from looms and spinning wheels to chisels and brushes. The presence of sewing machines or printing equipment in a shop does not negate the handmade nature of the products. Instead, these tools can be seen as an extension of the artisan’s hands, enabling them to execute intricate designs and achieve consistency in their work.
    The resulting products from both artisan craftsmanship and handcrafting carry the mark of the individual’s skill and creativity. They are unique, often reflecting the personal style and expertise of the maker. In contrast, mass-produced items lack this personal touch and are typically created in large quantities with minimal individual variation.
    In conclusion, it's essential to recognize that the use of certain tools in a small shop does not detract from the authenticity or value of the handmade items. These tools are simply part of the broader tradition of craftsmanship, allowing artisans to refine their techniques and produce high-quality, distinctive pieces. The essence of "handmade" lies in the creativity, skill, and dedication of the craftsperson, not in the absence of tools.

      @@fvr12345 Yes, I do sell on Etsy, but very little. My whole life I’ve dealt with competition from China. I used to sell to department stores and boutique stores, but I’ve watched my market shrink and my customers disappear over time. Now, it's India and Morocco cutting into China’s market. As the world gets smaller and communication gets cheaper and faster, that’s just the way globalism goes. Blaming Etsy for that is a little unfair; they’re no different from the department stores. Everybody's got an angle and is looking for a buck. Even Amazon has a handmade section. It’s just what happens in a global market.
      There are still people who are happy to pay a little more for a product made in the USA, but they expect better quality for the difference. To make my products stand out, I source leather from Italy and work with certified tanners. I travel to Italy to collaborate with them. Additionally, I’ve developed special tools to increase the quality and efficiency of my products.
      The real problem lies with consumers who don’t understand that well-built items last longer and are more economical in the long run. I’m very picky about the quality of goods I sell. I must confess that I’ve tried to buy from China several times, but I couldn’t bring myself to put my name on the subpar products they offered.

    The CNBC video was ridiculous to me. Also Came into this video expecting negativity but was positively surprised by your balanced view. There is a lot of trash and infringement on Etsy sure, however the sellers in the CNBC vid had the audacity to say a shop shouldnt be on Etsy just because they were only selling tumblers - like WHAT! I checked one of the sellers and she has less than 300 sales after opening in 2009. So others have worked hard and found a legal business model and you want to complain on TV because they’re more efficient than you? Not handmade?? Tell me you cut the trees to make the pencils and paper you draw with! There are big problems with Etsy for sure, IP infringement and dropshippers included, but that Seller was just whining and not understanding business basics.
