I have a friend with an MFA in graphic design from UCLA and according to Business Insider UCLA is the number one college in the country for getting your masters in fine arts meaning your art is top notch. My friend’s art is. She got numerous art scholarships and won art competitions but when she opened her Etsy selling her graphic designed art she wasn’t selling despite being better than most people. I’ll show her this video
I'm confused as to which subject your friend actually got her Master's degree in? Was it Fine Art, OR was it Graphic Design? "Fine Art" usually refers to art that you do to satisfy yourself, and you may display and sell it in a gallery. (Although you may take commissions, you are doing things your way, and entirely by your choice and not catering to the whims of the payor of the commission. I would consider the payor more of a patron of your art, in this case). "Graphic Design" usually refers to art that is made for use in graphic communications media, such as what is considered Commercial art. That may consist of highly stylized graphics and motion graphics, that are done either in a workplace setting at a print or video media company, (like for a TV or video channel position as their graphic designer), or a freelance designer who would work from home, or even a graphic designer who also runs their own company, and may hire other designers as well. Your friend may not be selling her work (regardless of numerous art scholarships and art competition wins), due to her work being ONLY WHAT THE JUDGES LIKED. NOT ACTUAL BUYERS! And that applies to the art scholarships also. Those are given according to what THEIR taste in art is, meaning the taste of current Art Department administration, and possibly a panel that would include a patron or two of the arts who is actively donating to the art scholarship programs. Those are the people who most likely are making the choices of who the art scholarships goes to. (So NO, it is not the general public, the people who are ACTUALLY THE FUTURE CONSUMERS WHO WILL PAY THEIR HARD-EARNED MONEY FOR THE ART, that are deciding upon what artist gets the scholarships or wins the competitions). The institution of "higher learning" chosen by a NYC-based financial and business news website, is not exactly what I would consider an authority on where to get a "Fine Art" degree. So sadly, her art must not be, "better than most people", because customers speak with the power of where and on what they spend their money on, and if her art is not selling on a platform like Etsy, then it is not appealing to the general public or even to a specific niche. The real world is a harsh reality that can be quite different from school, and UCLA Fine Arts program failed in preparing her to make a living off of her art after graduation. I blame them, not her. I am sure that if anything, the UCLA Art Department professors would have looked down their noses at Etsy, as opposed to a Fine Art Gallery.
Art is subjective. You don’t need a degree in art to be good or better than anyone else. “Top notch” because you went to college? That’s so ridiculous and wrong.

I paint realistic beaches and ocean using oil and acrylic as a hobby and have sold some canvases, I also do pod and never thought of it as an artistic way it's not artistic at all, I basically download and add and make a simple design, I make what people are buying, if I used my art on clothes people would never ever buy but definitely I can see why putting it on coaster or pillow would be a functional idea

@dylanjahraus what you say in this video is really not something groundbreaking. I've been hearing these things a lot from successful artist. My wonder is how to balance the fine arts art that I have for exhibitions and actually a shop that will allow me to do the fine art art
@dylanjahraus The main reason is because I want to start my career, see my art meeting, their true owner. I am still in the phase of research, thinking and meditating while I finish my University degree. Then I wish to do art and selling it full time.

I blame them, not her.
I am sure that if anything, the UCLA Art Department professors would have looked down their noses at Etsy, as opposed to a Fine Art Gallery.
Art is subjective. You don’t need a degree in art to be good or better than anyone else. “Top notch” because you went to college? That’s so ridiculous and wrong.

I paint realistic beaches and ocean using oil and acrylic as a hobby and have sold some canvases, I also do pod and never thought of it as an artistic way it's not artistic at all, I basically download and add and make a simple design, I make what people are buying, if I used my art on clothes people would never ever buy but definitely I can see why putting it on coaster or pillow would be a functional idea

@dylanjahraus The main reason is because I want to start my career, see my art meeting, their true owner. I am still in the phase of research, thinking and meditating while I finish my University degree. Then I wish to do art and selling it full time.
