Christ's Hospital - Marching Into Lunch

- Every day (except Sundays), the students at Christ's Hospital march into lunch to the sound of the School Band.
Christ's Hospital, often known as The Blue Coat School is near Horsham West Sussex and aims to provide an excellent education to students whose parents cannot afford normal private education.
They have a thriving music school, theatre group, well equiped Art and Design school and focus on sport as well as providing a first class education.
I hope you find this short video interesting. I am an ex-student.
All rude remarks will be removed.
I love the whole concept, equality, togetherness, discipline and cheerfulness, it reminds me of the famous phrase, -all for one, one for all - I would have loved it if would have been member of this school community. And for those who are attending the school now:- make the best of it, make every day a worth while day, you will remember those early school days for many, many years to come.
We in Holland would say:- a day without a laugh, is a day not lived
Cheers to all of you
try being one of us marching 💀
I am proud to have just discovered from the 1881 census that my 3x great-grandfather's brother was a beadle at the original school, before it moved from The City of London to Horsham.
In the US this would only be done at a military school. I love this.
At my school we leg it to the dinner hall so we get to the front of the queue. Sod marching
My heart is so set on my son attending this school! thankyou for sharing! xx
And did he?
im going this year

This may be buried in the stack of comments but the march played is Semper Fidelis by Sousa, the branch march of then USMC.
The school band seem to have a predilection for the marches of Sousa, having used "The Washington Post" in the past. In any case, Semper Fidelis = Forever Faithful, which seems appropriate enough more than 400 years after the death of the school's founder, King Edward VI.
I was there from 1936 to 1943.
Did you march into lunch then?
@@susanpaxton1953 pretty sure he's dead now if he attended school in 1936
Thousands of them. I'm impressed with this organisation. Young people showing us the way.
fun fact: they wore this uniform since 1553
I wonder if one could chance upon a uniform hundreds of years old in the school second hand shop (or maybe they would have worn out by now).
My dad taught there in 1972 and I vaguely remember him showing me the school (I went to Springfield Park school).
I too was a Master Mariner Presentee and at CH Girls School during the 1970's. It continues to be a great school with many proud traditions.
Marching shows pride, discipline, respect and team work.
Just spotted my eldest daughter marching to her lunch!
faiscacapoeira5 great, I hope she enjoys/enjoyed it there. Great School.
@@jpptubie Ah thank you-this video was 11or 12 years ago she's almost 24 now!
Just heard today my daughter number 3 has got into CH!!! Absolutely over the moon!! 😄
faiscacapoeira5 Great news, she will enjoy it there and I am sure will benefit greatly from the experience. Lucky girl!
@@jpptubie Thank you so much! My eldest daughter went 11 years ago, infact she's in this film marching! Never imagined my family would be privileged to have this opportunity for another one of my children. There's nowhere like CH!
What’s your daughters name x and what year is she in??
At 69 with a poor level of education makes feel great for these young people to have what I could only dream of I'm from Belfast not a lot when I grew up. 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
I left my local school and was in the lowest quartile of achievement. A scholarship to CH gave me the opportunity to work hard and play hard and I’m very grateful to the school for the help they gave me. You are right, the new starters will achieve significant personal and educational development.
I love CH! My eldest daughter went there, it's awesome and out there!
They played the same band music while I was there. It is nice to see so many views.
My son Christopher Tambling thoroughly enjoyed his time in Peel A and made the most of his talents playing Organ in both Big School and the Chapel where the Lord Mayor of London gave him his ARCO Certificate. He went on to hold the record of being the youngest (14) to play his own composition on the Albert Hall Organ, when CH were asked to give a display at the Nat West Brass Band Championships in 1978. He was on a Presentation from the Hon. Company of Master Mariners.
Lol, this message screams tory
Ooooo peele A I go there lol I’m not In peele thi
Very familiar. I was in Coleridge B until 1972. No girls of course then. Explored much of the underground 'tube' then inc. under Chapel and to Infirmary.Fabulous education.
Hey, i currently go to CH. Could you tell me more about the tunnels :)
Last week I bought the double CD called "Rock School" from Poundland for just £1. It features CH for the Roc School series. excellent value and one to look out for.
What happens if your really hungry? They must have a long lunch break to get all of this done.
Only in England....still good though.
People from around the world go there
My mum went there and I went for the entrance exam yesterday and hoping to go for year 7!
I really hope that you get in as the school gives pupils a great opportunity in life. Post back when you get the results, many of us go back for Old Blues Day. Good luck 🤞
I will thank you!!
The Result are coming soon it is the 8th to the 15th of November so hope it comes back saying passed
@@zoemasters9327 Good Luck 🤞
Thanks!!!
Wow! Such dedication on such young faces! Dare I say it, coming from my ancient mind, but don't those young women look sexy with their marching tone? At first I thought it was some American military school vamping it up before they go up to the academy - they look so serious! But then again, I guess they were hungry - who wouldn't march at double quick pace to get some grub down? Every credit to everyone involved - it brought a smile to my face and had me feeling we can feel assured that some part of our young society will be well prepared to take up the slack as we older guys move into retirement.
Actually, they are marching at the standard US cadence. Which is what Semper Eidelis is written for.
And here is me thinking it was motivated by stomach rumblings.
Well, the band would get the whole school mad at them if they played a slow march or La Boudin at the Legion pace of 80 paces per minute.
Hi, Robert. Guess you're right! Did you notice what appears to be a shoe, just on the pavement leading into the building area at about 2.15. I've watched this clip a few times but only just noticed it. By the time the next group got to that spot - it had gone. Top marks to the person shedding it - just kept on going. See what you think. Kindest regards, Bill.
Yeup, that dorm section didn't miss a step.
Or...you can just bang on a triangle and yell"CHOW TIME"
Result: chaos. Or you do it in an orderly, fair, and quick manner, like this.
@callum1131 It was originally founded in 1552 in London, and then it moved to Horsham and the girls school joined later. Try doing "wiki Christs Hospital" for more information
pity but every school should do that and bring back respect in our islands
Kenneth Sewell no, it's a pointless waste of time, why not focus on better teaching instead?
Its god to see young people at their best.
oh how i love and miss ch
I love this. The band is of a very high standard. My British school in Hong Kong never did this. Then again, the colonial days were over.
Good band, playing Sousa march Semper Fidelis.
This school is so nice! I want to go there!!
don't go there. i had an awful time and it's full of paedophiles
Get there if you possibly can; you'll never regret the experience
well I did
I'm working my butt off to go my mum did she says the food isn't great
Unicorn Is Me i was there a few years ago and the food is good :)
Must've been dossing marching that day... WEST IS BEST, EAST IS LEAST
That's been banned now.
LMAO WE STILL SAY THAT. But now its west is best east is beast
We just got a email from CH saying that they need a nother 2 weeks to mark the tests after having a month to do it!
Oh dear, well fingers crossed you get in.
I didn't get in :(
@@zoemasters9327 sorry to hear, but don’t be too disappointed, many people who have not gone to such schools have done well. My advice is work hard and play hard, give your best in everything you do and be positive about life. Success comes from personality and luck, as well as qualifications. I wish you well.
@@zoemasters9327 Just a thought, there is year 9 entry also. You not parents should contact the school to ask for any improvement suggestions and thank them for considering you even though you were not successful this time
Yes I will try for year 9 thank you for all your soport
Love it!
So many memories!
Lucia M Hi Lucia! Genuine question, were there things on the menu that were generally disliked?
Left CH in LE over a year ago. I don't regret leaving, but this does make me miss it a little. Actually, the second group that goes out is Thornton A - my house - and I can see so many of my friends! I'm not in it, probably because I was absent SO much, but it's really cool to see.
You probably went to school with my eldest daughter then, she's in this video, Cole B.
Such fine traditions.
They're wizards, Harry.
Fascinating. I had never heard of this school before. What is the significance of the groups marching together. Class?
@@mrblanche It’s a boarding school and the pupils live in “Houses”. Two prominent Houses are Lamb, after Charles Lamb, and Coleridge after Samuel James Coleridge.
The school marches in Houses.
@@jpptubie Thanks. I was kind of thinking that, since each group obviously had a mix of ages.
I am so impressed by this. Fantastic!
My old school :D
I wonder if they eat to the march too.Could be great to see😂
Really super This is how ALL schools should be with a sense of both "PRIDE AND DISCIPLINE" Sure beats the other undisciplined schools out there OBTW to all those posting envious and jealous comments "NAFF ORF"
why would anyone be jealous of the pointless marching and mindless repetition of barbaric medieval traditions?
Well, that's to start them off when they start marching through and to keep them in time with the band music. The school provides a good education as well as sound discipline and taught morals and respect, something that is sadly lacking in many people.
In case nobody noticed, those are distinctly American tunes. Having recently retired (Col) US Army MC, I have to hand it to 'em. They march far better than an bunch of physicians, the later comical at best!
WOO-HOO Leigh-Hunt A won marching this year !
Excellent!
Only in England Lol I went here a couple days ago for an MUN and the people were amazing . Shame that it was raining so we didn’t get to see this live .
Our son Cavan Plant gained a scholarship with honours to this fine school. However, he decided to stay ay at West Buckland School in North Devon where he also gained a scholarship and thrived both academically and socially. Would have liked to have seen him wearing his 'Housey' and he would definitely have made the school band as a saxophonist. He went on to university earning a 2.1 BSc with honours in Chemistry and is presently completing his Masters.
Well spotted!
Here's my question: Is Semper Fidelis _the_ lunch march or is it just a part of the band's repertoire of marches?
Semper Fidelis is just part of the repertoire, it's not a specific lunch march.
Thanks. It's good to see Maestro Sousa honored.
Is there any way to handle the homesickness? I'm looking at sitting the exam but I am scared of being homesick .
I'm going there this year too! Starts in like 3 days. I am quite nervous😂
@@mirabelle1286 Im now about to go!
DudeDoesGames have fun😋
Homesickness? I didn't have any problem with that during my time at CH! Loved it!
Hey, what's that song called the band uses to play?
Are all the students involved in cadet forces training? It seems like a very military disciplined based school!
Marching in to lunch has been a very long term tradition, and while there, it becomes routine, and I certainly felt proud marching into the Dining Hall with precision. I was in the CCF there as were many boys. Good disciple and self-discipline is important in life, do you agree?
@@jpptubie Being a military veteran myself, I absolutely do agree 👍🏻
I love this school and think it is an amazing school.I want to get a scholarship here for my music
no we are an independent boarding school. we do not follow the governments curriculum and you have to pay fees
Im going here in September!
DudeDoesGames Well done and make the most of the school, the more you put into the school, the more you will get out - you will have a fabulous opportunity. Congratulations
2:15 In the US, teen boys wear their pants down under their butts. In England, teen boys wear dresses with belts down under their butts.
the ones who leave you tube comments
They aren't dresses it's called a housey coat
@TheCharlotteCoster Well said and so true!
How wonderful :)
They seem to be wearing cassocks. Looks a bit anachronistic. Makes for a strange view.
Thank you for your comment. It is the traditional uniform that has been worn for over 470 years, since 1552. The uniform led to the school being named the Bluecoat School”. The uniform is much heavier than a cassock and is very warm in winter.
Tradition that's what makes us British well done makes me smile
Fantastic :)
Ha, around the 2:10 mark one of 'em loses his shoe. Sunday detention!
Is this a school for underprivileged kids?
The majority of pupils attending receive support, and some significant support with school fees. I think my parents paid around 10% of full cost fees.
I should add if Labour get in power and charge VAT on public school fees, the proportion of pupils benefitting from scholarships will have to go down as more full fee-paying pupils will probably have to increase. I despair at the politics of envy which will deny some disadvantaged kids a welcome opportunity to receive help and succeed.
My current school :)
Parris Island look out.
(I hope it was a good lunch after that.)
Not quite as easy as just getting up and walking to the cafe is it?
Very cool. Being from the States I found this to be very odd. What is the purpose of the robes? Sadly this sort of school would never do here b/c the ol' ACLU would never allow it--to structured for them.
Nope, not true at all. A school like this would be very successful here. The competition to get accepted would be huge.
They have simply kept the same uniform for the whole of the school's existence. It is Tudor-style robes and stockings that have been the school's uniform for approximately 460 years.
A tradition since the 16th century & yellow stockings were believed to ward off the rats.
This is a special State school?
I just went there today.
Quite good actually, in step arms swinging the right height but when calling out the pace it should never be "Left, left, left, left right left" calling it that way means you have to take a left pace three times! I joke of course but an Army drill instructor would never permit that. It should simply be "Left right - left right - left right - Leeffft" a pause and then again if needed the same tempo repeated.
agree about the arms that is how we did it at Hendon in rhe 70s & 80s now the standard is nowhere as good.
Yep i went there for my cricket career
There'll always be an England.
I'm planing on going to sixth form there and I actually went to the open morning ! It seemed like an amazing school , would you recommend it ? It seems quite tough to get into as well :)
Definitely go if you can. I went there some years ago, but I regularly go back for Old Blues Day. You'll pick more up than just a good education- you'll also gain extra confidence; sense of friendship unknown elsewhere and a broad outlook on life. Good luck, go for it.
jpptubie Sorry for the late reply but wow , it sounds like an amazing school, with wonderful experiences attached to it ! I don't know if it is the same now but do you know what the process of the assessments are because I've recently sent most paperwork!! Haha worried about what is yet to come :)
Crazy4U120 I am sorry but I do not know the current process. I have been back there quite a few times, met the Head and everyone seems very happy there. You should go for it, you really would benefit both academically and socially. Best of luck.
Wow!
What is the tradition behind it?
simply getting a large number of pupils into the dining-hall in an orderly manner as quickly as possible.
Shame about the teacher-sanctioned bullying and all the stupid petty rules and traditions that made my time and many others' there needlessly miserable... At least it taught me to hate God and the Queen.
This marching was so pointless. I skipped it by running round to the back doors of dining hall whenever I could. That awful uniform...
The school is embroiled in a paedophile scandal now involving the priest and my history teacher from 20 years ago
bakunin888 this is not what God is like...
A great many more of us enjoyed it all during our time there!
What's for lunch ?
Some kind of greyish slop. Who knows what it was made of?
East is def the best cuz its gt da best houses on da avenue leigh hunt a maine b etc.
But it's not military so why do they act like it is with out the uniforms. Not disrespecting the school.
+Nigel Farage But they are all wearing the same clothes, isn't that uniform?
Tim Williams I meant millitary uniforms.
The dining hall has two small doors in the front ... do you know a safer and faster way of getting 840 pupils through 2 doors without chaos? And fitting in a band concert at the same time plus teaching some discipline and learning some house pride?
"Christ's Hospital ... aims to provide an excellent education to students whose parents cannot afford normal private education."
... this is not a normal private education in any way...
Well said, my parents could not have afforded full fees and paid about 1/5 of full fees.
Looks like Hogwarts in Harry potter
My daughter went there , and actually it was the first choice to film Harry Potter, but the headmaster refused as he said it would cause too much disruption!
Marching has gone down hill....
the guy at 2:15 the person behind him stood on the shoe and it came off :)
How did you even see how that happened? I watched it on slow three times and can't see in all the mess how the shoe came off. I see the shoe but not how it came off. I do see that those kids are sagging the only way they can since they can't actually sag their pants. Makes the belts kind of useless having them down around their thighs!
i have an eagle eye :) i can see loads of little things they do to each other, like at 2:34 the guy fixes the guys collor in front so he doesn't get into trouble.
03:41 the guy at the back his belt has slipped down and is around his knees lol.
The sheer terror you must feel.
Semper Fi !
EAST IS BEAST am in Leigh Hunt b furthest and best house on the avenue :)
Hope you're enjoying it there. Are you in the video? Hope the school didn't mind me uploading it. If they'd like a copy of the original video, they just have to ask.
Lulu Walsh NOPE, East is least, West is Best! COL BB
@WillTheGamer101 let me guess: you have square eyes, eat only pasta & pizza, never sees daylight and think the world is a computer game, right ? ...I knew it !
@baptist44 Hahaha, no no. The blonde girl who is doing the shouting posted that from my RUclips account. She's my flatmate at university where I'm reading Geography and City Planning. Just thought you might to know so you can alter your preconceived notions about me.
Does this happen every day?
I had to do that every day that I went to school there
Unless it is raining
Everyday unless it's raining...and we don't on sundays
Yes
Yes, we don’t do it on Sundays or when it rains,
@MrsBlackOps Are you serious? O_o
This fascinates me - does the *whole* school march to lunch on the set days, and does everyone in Christ's Hospital know how to play a musical instrument? Does everyone in the school march in step perfectly? Does the school ethos tend to produce c/Conservatives and does it tend to produce people who are successful in the armed forces?
The whole school marches in, and in my days, when it rained, we went via the Tube to the dining room. Not everyone learns to play a musical instrument, I didn’t but I wish I’d taken up the opportunity to. The marching in step is pretty good, see this and other videos. The school gave me confidence, and although many go to university, we left feeling we could pursue our ambitions whatever they were. I know some went into the armed forces. This isn’t a posh school like Eton, but a school where they try to add value to the students that allows them to achieve goals beyond their original expectations.
Thank you.@@jpptubie
@jpptubie ok cheers :)
This is not a military school and they do damn fine. The left and right wheels are pretty smart for civilians. And I love it that they are playing The Washington Post Match by John Phillip Sousa! But those shoes and yellow stockings...ugh!
Dude that's because we start on the left foot. They do that in the army too >.
posh boy callux
not gonna lie looking forward to leaving
lmao you have now (i literally just started,, same)
Umm except it's no longer like that :'( the school's gone money mad...and the staff or whatever keep spending the "little" money they have on crap like better looking bins and chairs for your posture that don't even work, rather than for better chefs or better teachers :S
lets play a game of spot the black person
ThePackLeaderWolfe Actually i go to this school and majority arent white (2017)
huh neat ok i might be joining this school next year btw
what year you in?
My eldest daughter is in this video, and yes the majority of the students are white. My youngest daughter has just got in, 11 years on, and the majority of pupils are non white. Point is, CH take their candidates on merit not; wealth, colour, religion. Their entrance system is extremely difficult, the candidates they choose are very talented.
