- Here is the last part of Verdi's Requiem Mass, as performed in the Royal Albert Hall, London, at the First Night of the 1988 Promenade Concerts. Julia Varady is the soprano soloist and the BBCSO is conducted by Sir John Pritchard, at that time its Chief Conductor. The chorus is made up of the BBCSO Chorus, London Philharmonic Choir and Bach Choir. As stated in reply to one of the comments down below, the majority of the performance was inadvertently wiped, though not by me, from the VHS tape on which it was first recorded. Maybe some else has it complete and can upload it here.
Incredible singing. I think she's one of the greatest sopranos of her generation.
I couldn't agree more.
Amazing!! This is real Verdian singing - fearless, soulful and passionate. Her technique is incredible too. Varady is already one of my favorite voices
Phantastisch - eine Sopranistin, die das MIT GESCHMACK und PIANO und DECRESCENDI singt. Großartig!!!!
A treasurable snippet for which many thanks. I heard Varady live only once in The Four Last Songs with the Dresden Staatskapelle. She was glorious!
Impeccable soprano
Along with her incomparable (in our time, anyway) variety of soprano Repertoire & level of performance, Varady has no equal in my estimation. Just by going on You Tube gives some idea of her stylistic & vocal mastery. Even since retiring shortly after the beginning of the new century she remains unmatched.
Very secure and versatile soprano. Great range from solid chestvoice to high C. Has sung everything from Mozart to Wagner.
I had the privilege of playing rehearsals at the Brussels Opera with her and Pritchard of the Rossini Stabat Mater. Probably 1984. Wonderful
She is absolutely perfect in the hole aria! Marvelous!!
Meravigliosa!
A truly wonderful conductor
Incomparable!
Inmensa Varady!!!!!
Beautiful!
Varady is perfect here!
Varady could do it all + beautifully interpreted as well in whatever venue she chose.
❤❤❤
pass the whole concert please
Lovely performance
thanks, do you more.
if there is anyone out there have the complete performance of the first night of the proms 1988, could you PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE upload it for me ,. It would mean so much to me. Many many thanks Mike.
Who are the other soloists, please ?
They were Dolora Zajick, soprano; Dennis O'Neill, tenor; and Evgeny Nesterenko, bass. I'm sorry that for technical reasons the complete performance didn't survive on the VHS video tape from which the finale came. I also think it was very strange that the three other soloists didn't also sing in the finale along with the mezzo. I wonder why Verdi just left them sitting there, as they did in this performance.
@@adam28xx Verdi knew what he was doing...he gave the other three soloists the beautiful Lux Aeterna, and then gives the final movement to soprano and chorus.
Adam28xx: a very odd comment! And may I point out that Dolores Zajick is the mezzo and Julia Varady is the soprano. Nevertheless, thank you for the priceless post.
Várady Júlia le nom correcte. Ne vole pas les accentes!
