This woman was a phenomenon. I know of no other soprano whose active repertoire included Donna Anna, the Figaro Countess, Donna Elvira, Fiordiligi, Pamina, Vitellia, Elettra, Fidelio, Violetta, both Verdi Leonoras, Abigaille, Desdemona, Senta, Eva, Sieglinde, Arabella, the Composer, Giorgetta, Cordelia, Elisetta, the Capriccio Countess, and countless other roles. Not only was she ready to sing all these roles flawlessly at a moment's notice, but according to Fischer-Dieskau, her husband, she even took on the Queen of Night! In addition, her technique allowed her to sing with a fresh and unspoilt voice right up until the day she retired. A criminally underrated artist. The audiences in Berlin and Munich, where she performed regularly, were fortunate, indeed.
Great singer! There is an earlier video of her singing this where she actually sings all the trills, but here she misses all of them. She should have been more famous than she was.
This isn't from the Orfeo recording with Julia Varady's husband Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau conducting. I'd be interested to know who the orchestra and conductor are. The Orfeo recording was made in the nineties, but this would probably have been filmed several years before that. On RUclips there's two amazing videos of Varady in a live performance of Nabucco by the Paris Opera around 1995. Although by then Varady was well in her fifties , her voice was still stupendous and her acting superb.
Imponente, quizás única en su tiempo. No me parece que tenga voz de soprano drámatica sino lírica tirando a ligera, pero su manejo de la voz de pecho es encomiable.
I cannot listen to Souliotis because it makes me sad. She had beautiful voice and she could have been great if she had started her career later with more training before. She wasn't ready for such repertoire yet. You cannot sing Abigaille without proper technique, it's suicide. Varady is wonderful here! Fantastic and saddly underrated singer, she deserved to be more famous.
arturo onzari Aida is not half as difficult as Abigaille, it doesn’t demand any irregular demands from the the voice type it was written for. Abigaille demands an assoluta- the 2 octave jump in the beginning of this video alone is harder than Aida. Lows, highs, heroic coloratura, lyric and dramatic singing are all required in Abigaille. Aida requires a spinto...
Maybe that Hernandez is a naturally louder voice. But I like Varady's fiery and fluid lirico, lirico-spinto who sings some dramatics. Unhappily Saioa Hernandez doesn't easily vocalize (Macbeth). And her monochrome rather agressive tone suits better the dramatic roles than the softer characters ( like Amelia or Aida).
I love how she's not afraid to take risks. Absolutely fearless singing!

I heard her for many many years in Romania, I was a child at that time but she impressed me very strongly. ❤
Sie war in ihrer Zeit eine der Besten !!!
This is a phenomenal rendering of this very demanding aria. Truly a great singer. More of that concert, please.
I can’t tell if she is better to listen to or to look at. Thankfully we get to do both!

Einfach perfekt! Bravissima! I looooooove you!
she is an outstanding vitellia

Save for the trills in the cabaletta, this is a great performance. Júlia Várady is now 81 years old. Bravissima!
Una enorme personalidad. Una auténtica reina.
Это ураган!!!!!!! Браво,браво,брависсимо!!!!!!
The conductor is Pinchas Steinberg.
Brawississimo ! Wunderschone - Platine interpretation ! Brawississimo !
Bravissima.
👏👏👏👏
If the Italians kept Devia for themselves, the Germans, and up to some extent the Austrians, kept Varady for themselves.

She’s a very developed lyric
멋져요~*
Other than Callas she is the only Abigaille I know
Go and listen to Elena Souliotis in this role. None better.
mrrkdino I know the recording. I don’t like Souliotis. Callas is the best Abigaille I know, this recording is amazing as well and both live.

You cannot sing Aida, Manon Lescaut, La Forza del destino, without proper technique, Aida is more difficult than Abigaille

Saioa Hernandez is much better. This Lady is very versatile INDEED. Arnold Bourbon Amaral

Henandez is very mediocre
Hernandez is not even in the same class as this lady.
Both lyrics actually but nicely developed nevertheless
