Non???

    Extremely beautiful aria and so difficult...Elena Souliotis is gorgeous here..so touchihg...no other soprano could ever sing until now this aria in this unforgettable way... Elena Souliotis spreads her rare talent ,in a pure way, without any technical protection...she gave us all she was gifted.. I'm always shocked by all these tremendous up and down expressions in her voice...

    I had the great privilege to hear her first in concert in London in 1971. She had replaced Caballé who was ill. Wow, she blew us away. I heard her at Covent Garden a few years later when she sadly was losing control. Such a great fire which went out too soon

      I absolutely agree. She pushed herself too soon and too often into roles to which she could have grown but which overtaxed a voice which was not really ready to take on such immense challenges. I heard one of her early Normas and she was booed [by an American audience no less] after a horrible rendition of the Casta Diva scene. However, she came back to deliver an incredibly sensitive and fiery rest of the performance and got a standing ovation at the end. She had the fire but unfortunately no one to properly guide her career.

    I believe this Nabucco is the best of her recordings. Her Anna Bolena has fine moments , but she is already struggling vocally at time. What I like best about this Abigaille, apart from the freshness of her voice, is that she displays a real feeling for the words and characterization. After some years Souliotis did return to the stage singing mezzo soprano character roles.

I saw all of her Covent Garden performances and there were scary moments, but she was an extraordinary artist, despite her problems and should never be forgotten. I saw her first on a Sunday evening at Drury Lane in a concert version of Nabucco with Boris Christoff , and she was extraordinary, Brava !

      @@jenylogan1 When you hear stupenduous voices like this today, I quickly notice the loss of quality over the last decades, with which I can no longer bear such parts today. There is no personality any more, no technique, no courage. Voices are artificially made "big", with the result that they are cold, uniform - AI for the opera house, so to speak.

    This voice is much lighter than Callas and even much lighter than Tebaldi who also had a huge voice. This is the heaviest role Verdi wrote for a soprano. Why would she sing it? Even Tebaldi with her huge thick voice considered HERSELF a a lyric soprano not a Spinto.

    • @jrosiner
      @jrosiner  4 года назад +1

      chosentenore I disagree. This is certainly a (coloratura) dramatic voice and I am not sure who’s voice was “heavier”. You may confuse heavy with mature as she started her career with dramatic roles and probably her voice sounds younger than that of Callas (at least in her studio recording of EMI of this aria).

    • @beachfanatic2010
      @beachfanatic2010 4 года назад +6

      Callas was 24 when she first sang this role. I believe the first time she sang it was in 1947. In between that and 1947 Callas sang Turandot about 30 times, Gioconda, Tosca, Fidelio, Cavaleria Rusticana, Wagner Ring cycle, Puritani, etc. And after 1949 she still had a tremendous voive. This Elena Souliotis is far from a coloratura. She does not sing the trills that are written. She is clearly struggling. She was inspired by Callas thinking she could be like her and the results were a horrific lost of voice.
