Robert Smith Interview 1986 in a Munich Beergarden by Babette Einstmann

- Interview June 15th, 1986
Munich, Germany, somewhere in a beer garden.
(In the video it shows '85, but that must be wrong, since he talks about their gig the day before at Nürburgring playing on the same bill with Simple Minds, which was the Rock am Ring-Festival on June 14th 1986.)
It was broadcast in a Cure-Special on german tv in 1992 (they played Fascination Street before fading into this old interview, if you're wondering why you hear a song from 89 in the background).
See here for the full broadcast: • The Cure - German TV S...
The interviewer is Babette Einstman, who some years later became famous on german TV as a TV presenter.
If I find out how to add subtitles, I might add them later or post it here, as I think her stupid translations and comments are quite essential to the fun and dumbness of the whole interview ;-)
@80smusicisawesome the interview really is from 1986, but the tv-show was made and broadcast in the early 90s. they showed a short excerpt of fascination street live in leipzig 1990 before they faded into this old interview from the archive. :-)
Thanks for the clarification.
I am glad you pointed that out! I was confused as to how a recording from 1989 ended up in an interview from 1986.
I thought the same too!
Robert's speaking voice is so calming. I love his accent.
Yes, it is. Perfect!
Me too, I like this interview, he's so charming and shy
Robert is nearly always very good to interviewers and fans. There have been exceptions of course, he has been a professional musician for more than 40 years, but in general he is incapable of being rude or snooty. He is just very kind.
I prefer the girl speaking German.
Meh, it's English, so whatever. Nothing Special.
I have found the purpose of the internet: it's to store all these wonderful Robert Smith interviews from the '80s and '90s, so that generations to come may cherish his charmingness.
You put WAY too much faith in "generations to come".
Pretty sure the word's 'charm'.
Yessss
Ah yes! It certainly isn't so people can whine incessantly on Twitter! 😎
hey @drea4195 love this idea.
Can we all say just how adorable Robert is ♥
yeah ✋😌
Affirmative
correct
as a straight male I was literally just thinking the exact same thing
hes precious
"Tobert? That's better than Robert Smith." hahaha! I love this interview...facial expressions, body language.. it's all great.
I thought she and he said "Tommet."
@@heidih3048 I thought she said Thomas 😭
he is the most adorable thing to walk this earth.
Its funny how he is sorteof shy, even today
hes absolutely precious and gorgeous
wasn't , ( but an inspiration to the boys next door and the band is great) and surely isn't now ( but lyrics and music are still on....it all comes down to whats coming next after ten years.... mute
His face when he says Simple Minds is awful....is like a look of pure evil. Oh Robert...you please me always.
@@TomDavids1 lol this comment is 10 years old bro I don't even remember making it
@@happy--radio What?!?!
Simple Minds in the eighties were far from awful.
@@liborsionko lip read - he did clearly have that awful, oon let's delete that. They were always smarmy - moi.
Simple Minds playing stadium bangers with huge NA popularity driving their confidence would have overshadowed the Cure.
Blame your manager Robert!
Can we have more people like this in 2022. He's so sweet and gentle
Sure, put that same energy out and you will attract it.
There are plenty of people like this at art school
No one cares about us until we issue few genius albums. I haven't yet so...
"yesterday unfortunately playing with Simple Minds, which is awwfull"
That's too funny, they get on my nerves as well.
I just fell off of my sofa!!!! By the way there are alot of “us” wierd ones walking around. I thought we were just happy positive souls. 😉⭐️💚⭐️
I love it!
Simple Minds is as good a band as The Cure any day. Robert was obviously jealous! 🤣 Btw, anything The Cure recorded after Kiss Me(3) was bloody awwwful! 😂😂😂
@@HungryForHeat I love Disintegration and Wish. Both of those albums are massive. To each his own I guess.
@@mikeyj.3605 Oh right. I meant Disentigration. That's a good album too. Everything after that is rubbish
Who the hell finishes an interview with "bye"..?
Germans.
Lol!
Germans are really just Western Slavs and some post-Communists. No humor or grace.
What else is she supposed to say?
@@kristripper she could be more nice, and say things like "it was a great pleasure, thanks again". We don't say "bye" in a cold way. It's not really polite for some countries. But it's a cultural difference with germans. In Germany it's pretty normal. And that's why it's hilarious.
the way he looked at her at 0:40 LOL, he was so out of it but i love him ahhaha, and at 1:34 XD XD
he’s so cute
"This should last for at least 2 days." Yeah, sure.
he said ''two...day...s'' to sound like Today
His ACCENT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Best thing
I would’ve been a bigger Cure fan in the 80s if I knew how hilarious Robert Smith was in interviews.
this is the funniest interview oh my god
I could be wrong, but I think he might actually be the most adorable thing to ever walk the face of the earth. They should do studies to prove it.
He totally is. I really adore him.
🏹🎯
that's a big boy beer glass
I saw The Cure and the Simple Minds at the festival Nürburgring in 1986. And Robert was right: The Simple Minds were awful
lol I'm severely confused because I'm watching this from 1986 but I can hear Fascination Street in the background...
The part he was drinking made me crack up! How adorably funny!
I love her diplomatic translation: "He said he's not too keen on Simple Minds, but that's a question of taste."
He's hilarious, a bit awkward, with a hint of fuck you attitude. Love it.
oh my gosh, he's so young. Always adorable.
So cute and adorable😍
What a cutie pie. I just saw The Cure at the Hollywood Bowl last week and he still sounds phenomenal. ❤️
Wow. Very popular over there ? 😊
@@eahannan Oh yes! 😊
Blossom ohio, 2023 Robert sounds greater than ever
I was there on May 25th as well. My first and only time seeing The Cure. That was probably the best concert I’ve been to. You’re right… he sounds the same. I had such a good time that I’m following the to Atlanta next week.
@@ghostdogzx-1474 Oh wow, I wish I could do the same. This was my first time seeing them as well, it was a Birthday gift from my son and I really enjoyed it.
my god I love him
hilariously mesmerizing!!! Robert:"don't expect me to drink the whole beer mug lady, that's not what we English Knights we are all about,(sarcastically) we are about spacing out, in our smear up make up listening to the voices in our heads, while giving interviews to reporters that can't translate appropriately and still conspiring against us"(by the frown on his face). PRICELESS!!!
I'm from Munich, but I don't recognise the beer garden, I need to analyze this a little more. Great guy though, I hereby postulate that every person in the world be a lot more like Robert Smith, that should solve all of our problems.
It’s been 10 years and the public wants to know. Did you ever find the beer garden? 😂
hahaha - unfortunately with Simple Minds - awful.
Heavy Autism vibes.
My respect for Robert grows. Love his simple minds comment and his honesty.
Go & listen to the first 5 albums by Simple Minds & discover for yourself that they were once a truly great & experimental band & pure innovators of the whole dance/trance scene that came later in the 80’s. Thank me later.
@@stephendarcy9803
I remember vaguely the Chelsea girl 7'
They tried to sound a bit different on early recordings, however I wouldn't call them a punk band, or, a dance.
I just think they changed their sound too soft on production later material
Unlike Big Country & U2 were heavier sound all round
@@stephendarcy9803 Indeed. Robert Smith's not making himself look very good by slagging off a band that he shared a stage with. Either don't share a stage with them, or keep your gob shut.
Yeah, Simple Minds are pretty good. Dunno what got into him.
Simple minds were/are great. Not cool of bob to slag them off
Love the Cure, but I love Simple Minds too.
Is he normally like that or he was feeling awkward? I have just seen about 2 interviews & he was still acting like that. It's so cute haha
yeah he used to be like that. Now he seems to be a little bit more comfortable when interviewed. I think a lot of it had to do with the kind of drugs he was taking in those days. A shitload of magic mushrooms and LSD can have this kind of effect to a person :)
Yup - at around 1:09 he watches something fly by in the sky.
hes always been awkward but I think it's just his personality:)
@@idfkwgo
Just depends on his mood
& Yeah, what ever 🥃🍻🍷🎶💊 trips, pleasure and being 🤮 experience
if I didnt like robert I will be "what's wrong with this kid" but since I like him I think he is the cutest "bye"
He was probably drunk as he always is
Or mushroomed or stoned or whatever. Robert used to take a shitload of different drugs in those days. About the making of the Top he once said ' Andy used to make a huge pot of mushroom tea every morning and it started off from there ' ...
Woud Wilder
Where does he say that? Source?
VIvi 42; he said things like this multiple times over the years. It's not a huge secret. Here is the interview with him about Andy making magic mushroom tea each morning.
www.theguardian.com/music/2018/jun/07/the-cures-robert-smith-i-was-very-optimistic-when-i-was-young-now-im-the-opposite
With mushrooms and all Psychedelics you build a tolerance after one dosage and usually need to increase the dosage 2x and the trip doesn't last long or have much intensity.
Okay bestie
He's so sweeeeet
you notice how he doesnt give a fuck about how he appears in an interview, hes just himself.
in 2023 this feels kinda strange.
1:46 friggin clown right there!!!! :-D
Haha cracks me up when she starts translating the first time and he rolls his eyes!
Classic Smith. Just saw The Cure in St. Paul MN and it was amazing. Best sounding concert in my life, 29 songs, sounded perfect.
Same experience in Ohio at Blossom Music Center. 2.5 hours of impeccable sounding Cure. It was magical.
He's just too cute
Love his smile at 1:24..
My favorite interview of Robert!!!!!! 1:39 is the best part lmao!
he is soo adorable
I could listen and watch Robert, all the time
Just wonder does he wear his Wife's 💄 at home?
Adorable and way too happy? Love the "not lost in translation" He was listening to everything she said 💯💥
omg....so in love..sigh...
That was the cutest bye ever!
I've seen this video so many times...I can't stop laughing...He is so fanny acts like a comedian!!!
Fanny? Do you mean something kinda like a vagina clown
Agree - he IS fanny
was he drunk or is he just awkward lol
Robert Smith is the cutest man in the world !
Robert must be protected at all costs.
He’s so fucking cute! Omg
Ouch! No love for Simple Minds. RS is certainly not one to hold back his thoughts on something or someone.
Love both bands but the cure are better and sound great live. Depeche sound like fking crooners.
Wonder what he was on at the time
Seing old Bob drinking from a stein is hilarious LOL
The day in this video looks lovely. I would love to lay on the grass or sit at the table.
She seems rather star struck
1:39 BAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA! Oh Robbie I love you sooo much! You go man! He's so shy and adorable....
I finally got to see the Cure, my favorite band since 1986, at Madison Square Gardens. Unbelievable. Fantastic.
Why was playing with simple minds …awful…?
Is Robert flirting :) sweet boy
What a way to end an interview...bye!
That was fucking hilarious - this guy is so down to earth.
True. Nice guy....
ha ha....love that nice robert trashes simple minds
What a sweetheart
I like when she was translating he started to drink his beer for a long second
Hes an angel omg im in love hes my Friday
"This will last me at least 2 days" HAHA, my hero.
I haven't seen this interview for a while and forgot how fucking hilarious it is! Great stuff!
I like the cure music. But dont like it that he feels simple minds is awfull, also the Smith he dont like....
The Great Robert Smith. Talking bullocks to every interviewer. Simply to entertain himself.
Adoro o Robert Smith!!!
Robert Smith will always be sexy.
💙💙💙 Just my words 💙💙💙
bob was struggling a bit with the beer..he nearly fell in.
Can't help watching it again and again and again and again......
Tan hermoso y adorable .te amo Robert
Robert auf dem Oktoberfest in München mit einer Maß in der Hand
@bonezzzz no way!!! Robert is sexier
Cute Robert!!!
I was a huge fan of the Simple Minds from their beginnings. Am curious what the issue might have been for Robert touring with them? I mean .... it's not hard to imagine but anyone can do that.
@lalaland Doubtful. They were in the same genre..... and as popular.
Cos they're crap
Probably rivalry. Minds were achieving mega stardom after "Dont You Forget About Me" in 86. Smith's being cheeky lol. Beer looked good though, classic Hefeweisen.
@@artlover1477Random trivia fact: "Don't You Forget About Me" was first offered to Billy Idol and he turned it down. Said it was the biggest mistake of his career.
@Thomas-fk3cw Very interesting Tom. Would have definitely been in his wheel house.
Pretty sure he was just joking about Simple Minds.
Nope. He was a huge fan of early Simple Minds and HATED what they turned into. He was constantly taking potshots at them in interviews in the late 80s.
He reminds me of Robert Pattinson too! God, I want to move to Europe! 😍
He was feeling good here. Nice.
“Thommet? Much better than Robert.” I love the interviewer!
That was a really fine moment in time.
Interviewer was cute.
ive watched this for like the hundredth time
bye jajajaja
So sweet!
I envy this dude
So cute🥰💋
The Cure was real alternative music. Simple Minds was the pop radio version of alternative music. In other words posers. I'm so glad to have found out Robert Smith shared my opinion!
"you didn't say awful …" LOL
“You didn’t say awful” 1:21
I love Robert Smith 🖤 He’s so charming and adorable 🥰
ugh i luv him
Our dude looks fucking ~out of itttttt~ 😂😂😂😂
@XxsilentninjaxX
Haha, that's because right before they faded into this interview they were showing a minute of Live in Leipzig 1990 (btw great footage and nice version of fascination street)
