Huh? They don't rule. They don't govern. They don't make laws. They don't banish people to the Tower of London. Great Britain went to a parliamentary system of government - a democracy - during the 19th century. Didn't you get the memos?
Absolutely spot on Robert, nobody is better than anyone else.....hence why royalty is bollocks to the core.
Some people are most certainly better than others.
Probably the bigest bullshit ive ever heard….
Some people are better than others…for sure
@@kaucdebunclili8537 yes but could it be hard work, talent etc got you to be better then others🤔. As opposed to be just born into something like Charles, William etc
Someone somewhere said that one should never meet their idols because that leads to disappointment. This person sure never heard of Robert Smith! It is mind-blowing (in the best sense) how amazing bands, who created amazing songs such as The Cure and Depeche Mode, turn out to be even better people and citizens.
Is david gahan really such a great person? Lol, really....he was the one least grounded of the bunch who took his fame and money and went on a one way ticket to self destru tion....almost destroyed his band and was the reason the most talented musician of the lot left and that band was never quite the same again. Hes not grounded.....he acts like such a rock star...its pathetic when you think of the curly haired geek he was when they started.
@@mapndo2337 Dave struggled with addiction and depression for decades, and that nearly ended his life - and I don't equate that to having a bad character. Many bands went through this same issue, and not all survived it.
I'd suggest more recent interviews of his - he's way past the young dude who's enamored by fame, fortune and living in the fast lane. Dave may express himself differently from Rob Smith, but their message on social and political issues is quite similar. They are on the opposite spectrum of the likes of Morrissey, who has revealed himself to be a rotten human being despite the fact that his music is absolutely brilliant!
@@gigihabib I was always under the impression that it was one of the other guys in DM who did the writing anyway... the one who passed a while back? No disrespect to Gahan or your point, just kinda backing up your original statement ;) I used to swallow up every tiny bit of Cure trivia I could. Loved DM way back before the interwebs, but but never really sought to 'know' them...
There is more music and musicians in the world than politicians/police/lawyers etc…when does music-spirituality finally take over the lying game we’ve all suffered for so long?
Wish more celebrities were more like him. A realist that is
I wish more people felt like this about celebrities too!!
Sorry ..I love the cure and robert but I think the interview was horrible .no need for that ....
Anthony BORDAIN Chris Cornell Chester Bennington etc…. Yes… the ones who talk logic end up suicided
I’ve had a crush on Robert Smith since 1987, even had a boyfriend who resembled and dressed like him. Still cool, still relevant. 👩🏼🎤💜
Just when you think you can't respect someone even more, they raise the bar again, brilliant, Robert Smith, a guy who can't be bought, and won't sell out, and that's why his band will never die.Hes everything I respect in a man.👏
This sounds like me the past week with the tepid, vacuous bollocks of the jubilee..
The more I listen to his interviews the more he surprises me.. in a good way
Robert is absolutely right about the monarchy and hereditary privilege. Fuck that!
All Billionaires etc. have hereditary privilege. But the royals don't have freedom to do whatever.
Well, they were better at killing people in medieval times.
He's not ranting - he's very level headed and also correct.
He has no understanding of the monarch's role in protecting our democracy as a failsafe against parliament going rogue.
@@thewizardssleeve119 you’re clearly not paying attention to the current government’s erosion of democracy, while the royals divide the time between ostracising the black one and protecting the sex trafficker’s mate.
So why didn’t the queen stop Johnson proroguing Parliament? She’s not doing anything about this govt. Why- because they are just over privileged figureheads. Nothing more. Robert is spot on
When is the queen going to protect us against bojo and his cronies? Order their heads to be chopped off.
@@thewizardssleeve119 Interesting comment.
Rob is the type of CURE that our broken world will always need
I loved the Cure. I was 18 years old in 1980, it was a different world back than in Australia. Such great artists who wrote music that came from their inner soul, at 18 I could relate and immerse myself into the lyrics. I thought these guys understand us. The Clash were another favourite of mine.
Robert Smith and John Oliver are two of my favorite people- 2 famous British celebrities that are against the monarchy. Love it.
I totally agree, seeing Kates gurning face actually makes me want to 🤮 who on Earth do these scrounges think they are. Love that Robert thinks like this.
I’m astonished how we still have a monarchy. It’s absurd and I hate the worship of the royals. I didn’t celebrate the jubilee the Queen can piss off. Also I’ve got no respect for people with titles and royal honours
Every day, the Daily Mail columnists stick their tongues firmly up the arses of the royal family; any bollocks trivia or speculation over their clothes is considered by them to be worthy of relegating serious news matters to the bottom of the pile. Please bury Nicholas Witchell, Jenny Bond and every public school 'royal expert' slime with HRH and do us a favour. I remember as a ten year old boy in 1977 that I though the Silver Jubilee was a load of crap and, at fifty five years old, my view hasn't altered at all. At that tender young age, I already could not bear how people with a totally abstract relationship with an institution could pretend that it's like loving your immediate relatives. It's fake.
Woot, she's gone finally. The queen was the last monarch who was liked. I think the royal family is gonna have much tougher days from here on out.
reward on merit , govern by election , hierarchies are wrong and the antithesis of human rights , no-one is inherently better than anyone else , yes this
I love The Cure and this has made me admire them more . Robert , is expressing my thoughts about the monarchy. Unlike other rock musicians his knighthood is now gone.
He's ok with that, he's more than ok. He doesn't need some stupid person in a crown telling him how awesome he is and the honor he has as a man.
Totally agree nobody is better than anyone else. It’s sickening that we’re encouraged to bow down to these people.
"Of course the fucking queen should die they should all - well - they should all live long lives 😦" LMAOJDKDH
This video got into my recommendation today because I Love The Cure of course, but that's kind of ironic
JEEEZZZOH... I've always liked Robert Smith and now i realise why 👍👍👍... I hate all the fuss about "The Monarchy" and all the toiletry pompous nonsense that goes with it... Definitely can't think of anything else in the world that annoys me more 🤮🤮🤢‼️‼️that was a BRILLIANT RANT👍👍👍🤗
I love him even more now
Gotta be my favourite video on the internet
Gosh I love him! He took the words right out of my mouth
After a summer of Royal celebrations. This video finally made me feel heard and understood. I thought there was no one doing critical thinking in this country
Man will never be free until the last king is strangled with the entrails of the last priest.
Great quote! Where did you find it?
@@woah6958 Sounds like something said during the French Revolution.
“It’s fucking easy” this is what blows my mind the most as I live in the Alice in Wonderland Circus.
This makes me feel so much better today, to hear all this is very relieving
Notice he didn't wish them any harm!and even wished them a long life! 😎✌
First, The Cure is one of my all time favorite bands. Second, listening to Robert Smith dress down the monarchy is so refreshing. I’m so tired of the PR campaigns that keep them propped up like Disney characters. Time to dissolve the firm.
Yes it was “refreshing” for me too, didn’t know he’d speak so ballsy about such a potentially dangerous topic. Was shocked years ago when I heard The Cure were playing an anti-porn concert somewhere and that was OUT THERE for me.
This is so good...I love Robert Smith and I hope I get to interview him someday
Yes.. it's a psychological con, "Behind all great wealth is a great crime".
I love this lad. I only discovered the cure a couple of weeks ago and I'm obsessed with Robert smith. He's just the bees knees. I'd make him the king of England but I can imagine what he'd say.
Truthful.talented.empathic. The polar opposite of the royal, parasitic class of lowlifes
Robert speaking the truth - love him.
Exactly right, it astonishes me that anyone thinks a monarchy is a good idea.
If you are a politician, you might enjoy going to the Royals' parties. They must be more exciting than parties held by politician who are in only for a short time.
They bring in tourist dollars, for one thing. Which HELPS the economy of Great Britain. Did you ever think about that?
@@jamesanthony5681 yes and it’s a stupid argument. I never do royal things in London. There is so much to do there without that privileged family.
@@jamesanthony5681 also if you’re that worried about the tourist dollars, kick them into a council flat and charge people to view palaces. Simple. But make sure it’s a flat where the lift doesn’t work
@@mscatherinelong67 Are you a Brit? If you abolish the monarchy and sever that link to the past (good and bad, as it was) then tourism to the UK will drop over the next 10, 20, 30+ years. Guaranteed. That's not a stupid argument. That'll be a reality.
Robert Smith and The Cure, are just f....ing great. Keep up the good work man, you just awesome in many ways. Is so f...ing unreal, all the talent coming from England, starting with Charles Chaplin, I really admire England, so much talent coming out of a little country, amazing.
He’s a fucking legend.
I never bother to know opinions of musicians I listen to as I prefer to have their music speak for itself but - wow - I admire Robert even more because of this.
He's Always been this way. He never changes, no lie, He gets better. Got to see The Cure on Wednesday 5/24/23 Hollywood Bowl. They made me Cry, sing, scream, laugh and at one point Howling. My 4th time. Every decade since the 80s. N They Never disappoint. It's been 2 days since the concert and I still feel High...EUPHORIC. I've been In love with them since "82 but Now It's an obsession. N Yup they're THe CuRe🤪💋
He's of course correct, but he could've articulated it better. The very idea that a person should have immense wealth, power and privilege purely because of the family they were born into is totally absurd. The point I like to make to monarchists is 'imagine we don't have a monarchy. Now give me ONE GOOD REASON why we should have one'. They NEVER have a reason. There ISN'T one.
Rob's an old punk - he was articulating straight from the hip
Right on …his music is the most articulated thing I’ve ever heard and it’s Fing awesome! Anyone who that
Can sing about trees and make it interesting is articulate! Love that song ❤
Don't you just love him?!🥰
Robert Smith through his music has been there for me more than any good friend
I didn't know he held this view. I appreciate him being so outspoken about it.
This would hurt my English Grandmother who is gone, but he is right really.
Always loved The Cure, new respect for Robert Smith who simply states what is obvious to many of us.
he’s absolutely right though, the monarchy is outdated and does need to go.
Why?
You want to abolish the monarchy? Go right ahead. And then see what happens to your tourism dollars. They'll drop over the next 5, 10, 20, 30+ years and everyone will be wondering WHY? Guaranteed.
It’s part of our culture. If you ask the world what they think of when talking about the UK, they will almost always say the royal family. Why would you wanna get rid of that? It’s not like they have any power anymore, I don’t get the problem man. All they do is frickin charity work..
@@wwbuirkle it costs normal taxpayers too much money. it’s very problematic when the cost of living is rising, yet we’re still giving them millions of pounds every year just to keep a tradition going. it’s unnecessary and expensive.
@@oracle8589 exactly. they don’t have any power; they just sit there with enormous amounts of wealth and a hell of a lot of privilege and we’re supposed to just say, “oh well it’s our culture”
the royal family is pointless in this day and age, not to mention insulting. there are millions of people in this country that are currently suffering financially due to a rising cost of living. i don’t think the royal family is going to help that in any way.
My sentiments exactly Robert, keep shining you beautiful soul 🫂💥✨ love you
Yes. Yes Robert. You are KING. KING OF PUNK. And the whole world loves you for it!
Is there anything that Robert Smith can say or do that doesn't make me admire him more and more every day.
I honour Robert Smith, I bestow my ever lasting appreciation for the Cure and his attitude to life and people.
It was very disappointing that local people in the UK blamed the Eastern European people in the UK which led to Brexit. There are lots of unbelievably wealthy people in the UK. The gap between the rich and the poor is so visible.
100% agree with Roberts comments, and as for nighthoods it’s all b*******, he’s a very interesting and intelligent man is Robert and gives an outstanding contribution to music.

Roberts loathing for the royals,is something he shares with Morrissey.
And John Lydon.

Makes me respect Robert that much more! Thanks for sharing this!
Every time Robert speaks its like someone is putting into words exactly how I feel.
Nice and relevant interview. Thanks
Robert you did except an award, your awarded into the music hall of fame, which the band deserved for your service to producing great music over the vast number of years.
Love the Cure, saw you guys in Nz many years ago, still to this day listen to your music.

I am now a cure fan what a legend
why did this video nearly make me cry😂
Mind you, Scandinavia has THREE effing monarchies.... but yeah, gotta love Robert Smith 😍
This is why I adore The Cure and more importantly Robert Smith. I too cannot stand the idea of Royalty, or honours
Love this man
Humanity and Equality and Fairness! Thank you for remaining your true self, Robert Smith.
I used to think like this. I used to really look up to people like Robert Smith, and didn't see the irony in that. Then I had kids, and I found out what a real existential crisis is, and realised that I hadn't even understood most of what was going on and I still don't. I still like Robert Smith; even though these days he looks like someone's crazy aunt that drinks too much wine and has too many cats. For a long time it was the upper classes and the establishment that dominated, now it's crazy wine aunts that want to tear it all down. We always need someone to look up to, and we always need someone to put them in their place. We need history and tradition too, because the people that came before us weren't as stupid as we so often take them for. Continuity is important, because we don't know all there is to know.
Watching this instead of queen funeral cos imma rebel innit fam
The more I learn about Robert Smith, the more I love him.
I can't believe I actually said the same 100% thing to people who were talking to me about the "Hereditary Monarchy" ... due to Liz's death ... I had so much respect for Robert and The Cure (Music) and now that has just been x10 ... Viva La Revolution ... Bring down "The Fascist Regime" (aka Sex Pistols)
I agree 100 percent with him. And it's the substance that matters, not the words. So for me his language is perfectly honest and I admire him so much.
It's a trip knowing he said the queen was gonna die on "some September 7th" and she actually did
Which song was that from?
@@woah6958 It's not from a song, rather it's an interview when he was talking about playing on the jubilee or receiving titles
