STAR TREK V - NEW VFX 9 - THE GREAT BARRIER

  • Now this is the first part I created in 2021. The great barrier in the original was pretty bad. But what should be used instead of it ? I decided to try some space footage for the background animation. It looks not really like "a great barrier" but it gets a realistic style and I like these visuals. I also used recordings of real space nebulae for the representation of Sha-Kaa-Ree.
    I hope you like my interpretation.
    In 2012 I started creating new VFX scenes for Star Trek V. I will now gradually put these online here.
    The aim was to design the look, the camera perspectives and the movements in the style of the 80s.
    Have fun watching

    I ran into the Director of Star Trek V …Years ago on the set of Boston Legal. I told William Shatner that Paramount should Hire ILM a and redo the visual effects, as they did for Star Trek: The Motion Picture. William Shatner told me then..that Paramount didn’t want to spend the extra money on Star Trek V.

    Seems like more of a nebula cloud than a barrier, one that one could have just steered around. Visuals still look nice though.

  • @thegreenmanofnorwich
    @thegreenmanofnorwich Год назад +4

    Hmmm. While your barrier is prettier, it's much less dynamic and looks like a random nebula with occasional lightning. Your Sha Ka Ree is pretty decent and looks mysterious, but I think I preferred that bizarre planet we originally got. I appreciate all the work you must have done, and it's better than I could do, but I didn't get much of a sense that spacefarers would have been reluctant to go, or found the planet particularly interesting.

    The novelization approached this much more sensibly - it mentions Sybok instructing (Scotty IIRC?) to modify the shields... which the Klingons, who are shadowing the Enterprise, notice and do as well, hence why they can also cross the Barrier

    I feel bad that I've only just discovered your channel!
    Ever since I read the novelisation of this film, I've wanted to change this particular scene. In the movie, Sybok comes across as a real fruitloop, but the book references his mind being influenced from afar by the false God's thoughts. I've always felt that after Sybok says "Given to me by God," a split-second image of the planet followed by an equally quick glimpse of "God", foreshadowing what we'd see later in the film, would convey that this "vision" was being purposely sent to Sybok. Then we cut back to "He waits for us on the other side."
    Do you think such a tiny edit would work, and show the false God's influence over Sybok? 🖖

    Why won't the studio allow ST5 to be improved with modern f/x and restoring some 10-12 minutes of dialogue, to flesh out the story? Seems to me it would be a money maker for the studio.
    In reality, there is a sort of "great barrier" at the center of the galaxy. The central hub of the Milky Way contains a huge number of stars, quasars, black holes, gas, etc., packed close together, all exerting various forces (gravity, EM radiation, etc.) on one another, making it a very dangerous region of space.

      Given that they're working on a 4K restoration of the TMP Director's Cut right now, I don't see why this film can't receive the same treatment. And it really should be done while William Shatner is still with us and can participate. STV really isn't a bad film, it's the bad VFX

      @@richardjohnson9543 Agreed. The FX are poor and there is a bit too much corny humor for my taste but I guess some people like the humor. But I'd like to really to 10-12 minutes restored where we learn more background to the events happening in the story. Thanks!

    This movie had such great potential ... only to be ruined by petty jokes, bad writing, and REALLY obvious plot holes.
    Anyways.
    VERY cool concept. Making layers of deep space images move to make it look 3D was awesome.
    Sadly, the overall look is like that of a nebula. BUT .... you weren't given much to work with either.

    People often forget how plagued the shooting of this film was. They lost half the budget, the companies they hired couldn't deliver the SFX in time... or at all... or anything better than subpar ones, therefore the script had to change on a daily basis... and tha release date couldn't be change to give them time to salvage the movie (curiously, kind of the same problems the first film went through... or the List In Apace feature film, actually).

    As much as I disliked the old "Great Barrier" SFX because it was clearly colors being dumped in liquid, I don't think this is an improvement. The actual Sha-Ka-Ree planet looked very mysterious with it's strange ghostly aura; I never had a problem with that. I really appreciate the effort this took; I think conceptually it is a little off.

But wow...that original scene with the Enterprise approaching the camera was incredibly bad. It is such a beautiful model and such a shame they couldn't have treated it better. Great work giving the Enterprise her beauty back.

      The first shot of the original barrier is fine, but the second phase was lame as all hell lol
      At the very least though, the band of stars shouldn't have just passed overhead, considering how long they remained in view as they approached at warp, y'know? :P

    • @bigfootfound5301
      @bigfootfound5301 2 года назад

      @@k1productions87 Yes, the "band of stars" was terrible. The "storm cloud is space" swirl I liked... it had a speilberg cloud quality, reminiscent of Close Encounters. But then they added the nonsensical band of stars, and on the edges there's this blue border that looks like dried glue. Ugh.

    • @k1productions87
      @k1productions87 2 года назад +1

      @@bigfootfound5301 The band of stars was only bad because it just shifted out of view as they approached. If it instead grew larger as they approached (you know... like far away objects do) and perhaps those "stars" were discharging energy between them, creating the barrier in question... it would make more sense.

    I like the start and the end, but the transition and the passing through the barrier are not really well executed. The original, while being clearly wafting colours in liquid, at least gave it a sense of thickness and density that was challenging to pass through.
