Unbelievable Footage Shows Cow Asking Man To Save Calf

  • Flo is a cow who lives on a beautiful farm near Millbrook, Ontario. She spends her days in a lush, green pasture that borders on a country road. The cows have access to a nice pond for drinking and for cooling off in. She shares this pasture with a herd of cows and some newborn calves. Flo delivered a calf herself but it was born on a slope between the pond and the fence. It slid down and under the fence, becoming trapped outside the field. It's not clear how long the calf was lying there, but the fresh umbilical cord showed that it had been born that day. It was also dry, which suggested that it had been lying in the sun for a little while. The calf may have tried to get back to its mother but the electric fence made this impossible. Dave was passing by on the road when he saw the cows enjoying a dip in the pond to get out of the heat. He stopped to video tape the cows as they did so. He noticed a cow to his left that was acting agitated. Dave doesn't know a lot about cows but he knew it was unusual for a female to scrape the dirt and make so much noise. He set his camera on the fence post and watched, confused by what was going on. He could see that her ear tag said "Flo". He eventually noticed that she was looking through the fence and then back at him. She seemed a little frantic as she mooed and he walked closer with his camera to see what she was doing. It became obvious that she had been asking for help. Dave saw her newborn calf in the long grass but he wasn't sure if her behavior had been a cry for help or a warning to stay away from her baby. The calf needed to get milk from the mother and he could also wander out on the road if something wasn't done. There was no gate nearby and Dave didn't want to try moving the calf far away from Flo. Dave decided that the best way to help was to lift the wires and pushh the calf under the fence. The calf seemed to tired to help and there was no way to avoid contact with the fence. Flo seemed to understand that her calf was being moved toward her, but Dave was very aware that only a flimsy fence would be between them if she became upset with what was happening. Dave was getting shocked and the calf was too. He hoped it would not cry out in pain before he could get the job done. Eventually, the calf was on the other side of the fence and reunited with his mom. The two immediately sniffed each other and began walking out into the pasture together. Dave spoke with the farmer and his wife, who did not realize that she had calved. They invited Dave to join them as they tagged the calf's ear and treated the umbilical cord with iodine. They checked the calf and found that it was healthy and unharmed. Dave took his camera along and filmed the two as they mingled with the herd. The calf wandered up to Dave for a curious sniff, as did Flo, seemingly recognizing him. They both wandered off and Flo's little calf was soon happily nursing as if nothing had happened. Although Dave was slow to catch on, Flo was obviously distressed and was aware that Dave could help her. She looked at him expectantly as she paced between him and her baby in a very clear attempt to communicate. We often underestimate an animal's intelligence and capacity for emotion. Flo showed a healthy amount of both in this case. You can't deny the love she felt for her newborn calf.

Oh wow! If someone messed with a calf like that in ranch country they could get shot. Newborns crawl under fences all the time. The calls the cow made were concern because people were there. If you startle a calf they have been known to run for miles through several fences to neighboring ranches where the mother can't follow. Please leave cattle to those that know about them and raise them.

Grew up on a farm. We had two ponds. One cold night we were woken up by lowing. Every cow we had was at the fence, calling for help. We went out and the led us to our far pond, a baby had been born and fell in the pond. It was trying to climb out. The pond was deep and my brother tried to jump in and push him out, but to no avail. My grandpa got the tractor and my brother wrapped the rope around the baby, while my sister and I gathered towels. When we got back they had him out. You could tell our cows, all of them were happy especially his mama! They saved little Flipper all of them, they asked for help, I’ll never forget it.

I had a similar experience with a sheep once when I was young. She was bleating outside the farmhouse we were staying in on holiday. She actually even came indoors when we left the door open, which is why I got a bit curious as none of the other sheep had behaved like that. I followed her and she led me to her little lamb who had gotten herself caught in some fencing. Thankfully no injuries, just trapped and distressed. Once I freed the lamb they both took off, but the mother looked back to say a silent thank you... It was so heartwarming to know that the momma did everything she could to protect her little girl and I'm glad I was there to help.

That calve would have made his/her way back to the other side of the fence when it got hungry.

You may be right. He seems to be in a beautiful pasture with other cows, staying with his mother to be nursed and loved, carefully tended and cared for by farmers who protect him from predators. The cows seem to have no fear of even strangers. That mother knew to communicate to the stranger that she needed help, and she was not going to stop him from rescuing her calf. She understood that humans care for her and she trusted him.
Her calf's life was made possible by the farmers. Maybe in the end of a happy life with loving humans watching him and feeding him, and caring for him, he will be humanely slaughtered without pain or fear, as many animals raised on small family farms are. Not like the factory farms which we all hate. God made a world where there is love and humble service between humans and animals.

Ian Mann, the "hopeful wake up" of any farm(ed) animals may never come. The explosion of reality shows on cooking, BBQ-ing, baking, "best ribs ever", marine species preparation etc... don't help. Lobbyists and farmers have, and are fighting the proverbial tooth and nail to keep it that way.

@longlegs11 oh my god, get a grip you idiot, they never pushed their beliefs on anyone!! All they said was "it's crazy that people eat meat." and you're getting all defensive! 🙄 it's fucked up to eat animals, simple as that. You'll come up with some bullshit excuses to justify it (oh I've heard them all now, believe me) but we do NOT need to eat animals, so you eat them purely for your pleasure, nothing else. That's honesly pathetic. You think your tastebuds are more important than innocent animals lives. I haven't eaten meat in 6 years and guess what I'm absolutely fine. God I'm glad I woke up unlike you, defensive sheep!
