This video brings back my favorite memory with Janis from March, 1969 at Winterland in SF. JJ was hitting her cow bell so hard on a fast instrumental break that she broke her drumstick. I was in my usual position, right in front of her at the front of the stage, and I had my tambourine with me so I offered it to her. She took it, played it and handed it back when the song was over. Then Sam’s terrific guitar intro to Summertime started and Janis looked right at me and started singing it to me! My best friend, Lucy, was all: Shelly! She’s singing to you! I was like: I know, shut up, don’t interrupt! She kept looking at me and singing for the entirety of the song. I was stoked! So lucky to have seen Janis live so many times! Later I carved: JJ 3-22-69 on the inside of the tambourine. Sadly, a burglar made off with it years later, but our moment remains in my memory and I still melt every time I hear Summertime.
Is this all true!!!? Amazing part of history! Wow! Your story is from the world we have already lost but I miss those times even though at those times I was a baby. Thank you for sharing your story!
@Shelly Stallion I'm from Detroit (blow the reveille)! *Amazing Story!* It would be amazing either way. But, I've decided it's 100% true! I never saw her live. I had a similar, not exactly the same, experience with her. She picked me out of the crowd, stepped off the stage (the venue used a portable 4 inch high stage) and walked up to me. I was just 14 years old and I was scared because hey, it was Janis Joplin!!! I didn’t have much Street Smarts at the time. She recognized my stress, gave me this little Head-Bob and backed away! Janis Joplin had a very tender side that I think wasn’t appropriated! That night, I sure did.!!!

@Theeaundra That's a huge misunderstanding of Janis. She cared very much what others thought. She felt like a freak show in her small town of Port Arthur, Tx. Gene Tyrna Thanks for sharing the memory with us RUclips fans of Janis. Her singing will always remind me of teenage romances, drinking under the stars, and of course, Summertime.
Gene Tyrna Well I'm not envious....no I'm not the slightest bit bothered it never happened to me...I'm not put out in the least....I would never have wanted to meet her anyway...me? Jealous?.... 😭😭😭 Seriously, that is an amazing story and I'm sure a treasured memory.
Played this performance so many times over the years. Still makes me cry. What a beautiful person that we lost the day janis slipped away. Love you janis always.
I'm 39 years old, going on 25 and this is the most beautiful thing I have ever heard. I play this for people all the time. Her voice.. My god, her voice.
In 6th grade I had the best music teacher. She was determined to make us understand and appreciate music, not just learn a bunch of elementary school songs. First she played the George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess version of this and I just cringed; literally covered my face with my hands and prayed for it to end. And then she played Janis... and I cried...and when she saw that I was crying, she cried too... I'll never forget Mrs. Welsh for that moment of discovery. It was the first time I clearly remember understanding music as art.
MY music teachers were not so inclined or enlightened. They thought that the Rock music was a fad that would be forgotten. Well, it's 50 years later, and I'm right, and you're wrong. Oh so wrong! !
My first concert was Janis 1970. I got to meet her, she hugged and kissed my cheek and told me I was "cool.' I still have her autograph she gave me that day. I can still see her in my mind, she looked so happy.
Je crois sérieusement que George Gershwin n’avait même pas rêvé d’une interprétation aussi magistrale. I seriously believe that George Gershwin had not even dreamed of such a masterful interpretation.
One thing about Janis....she never held back. She gave you her all. And we loved her for it. Nothing like her since. Her ability to emotionally connect is unmatched anywhere. Gone too soon. RIP Janis...we cannot forget you. We can only love you and thank you for leaving us such treasures.
I liked her minimalist approach in the beginning and throughout the song....punctuated with deep soul....nobody is like her...and there never will be again.
Janis Joplin was a deity...there I said it...and how the guitar weeps in this song helps me feel and repair my soul so that I may live 500 more years..
love janis, if she had lived, i always imagined her in a rocking chair on the porch of her house (maybe near the beach & ocean) relaxing with a pack of smokes, casually drinking but in a luxurious way of her favorite southern comfort and singing with her raspy delicious voice that would echo throughout time. mindblowing fact about her, she self taught herself to sing, so im very proud of her.
The bands of the 60s and 70s have a "heavy sound" that most heavy metal bands today cannot do, and it seems that the old bands did it without realizing it, I cannot understand.
Greed took over.. back tracks, voice overs, tuning, image, bullshit. I’m so glad I was born in the early 70’s and my parents were hippies.. so much heart and soul.. not like the shit on the radio now.. pure shit.. singing about wet pus%y. Fkn shame!
@@HeyJuuude-05 A group that does a lot of covers - excellently - are two sisters from the South, Larkin Poe. Another excellent, current, blues singer is Keb' Mo.' If you listen to them, you can get a strong start listening to blues songs. Also, certain other '60's bands - besides Janis and her bands - like the Allman Brothers, and the Stones (Keith Richards and Mick Jagger), covered older blues songs. And then there are the originals, like Robert Johnson, and many other phenomenal musicians. Another way to go at it is to stick with a blues song you like, and follow who covered it, starting from the early 20th century. Many original great blues singers did "Summertime." Another song was "House of the Rising Sun." "Midnight Rambler" (The Allman Brothers are linked with this one, but's much older.) "Back Door Man" (The Doors covered this in the '60's, but it goes much further back than that.) "Come Into My Kitchen" (Robert Johnson) "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?" (Leadbelly)
Damn, that girl's voice was an orchestra. Not content to sing one note at a time, she sang several, and our souls stood still and attended. She lived too deeply and burned up because of it and left us the glad recipients of all her tears and joys. Just magical and never forgotten.
A imagem de Janis de costa no início do vídeo é fantasmagórica e icônica, obra prima da cultura do ocidente! Voz forte! Presença forte! Mulher foda da porra!!!
Too many people in out teens in the 60's and on judged Janice because of her looks and not her amazing talent. She was a great woman who was hurting. She was the best Female Entertainer ever.
I'm surprised the Music Industry didn't have some hot looking Tart lipsynch Janis's vocals like what happened with CC Music Factory when they had a pretty, slim model lipsynch the slightly chubby Martha Washington's vocals(Martha sued and won).
She came from another galaxy, she was more than human. I will always love here and miss her, she, with this unbelievable voice and this heart and soul. Thank you Janis!.

We played this song at my father’s funeral as an intro to gather all attendants. He showed me the song a few years ago, now I realise how perfect it is. I hope he enjoys his summertime now ❤️
The first time I heard this song I was asleep in Austin Texas and someone's clock radio went off and this was playing. It was still dark out, a warm night with the window open and a warm breeze blowing in. I didn't know if this was even real... In fact, I'm still not sure.

Janis Joplin
Sadly, she had to. Not enough to survive without backup circa 1969. Maybe better today?
met her in 69 at atlantic city pop i was 17 she was 26, she was a cougar ...sweet girl, ask a lot of question, loved the accent I became a fan, still am
Gene Tyrna Thanks for sharing the memory with us RUclips fans of Janis. Her singing will always remind me of teenage romances, drinking under the stars, and of course, Summertime.
Gene Tyrna ich
that is amazing
Gene Tyrna Well I'm not envious....no I'm not the slightest bit bothered it never happened to me...I'm not put out in the least....I would never have wanted to meet her anyway...me? Jealous?.... 😭😭😭
Seriously, that is an amazing story and I'm sure a treasured memory.
Who were those fabulous musicians playing with her,not all were her permanent band i assume....
I don't know what it is about this version or her voice but I have tears in my eyes. Wow!
Nothing beats Live music✌
Two yearslater fromyour post and I'm experiencing the tears! Ahh Janis.
@@patriciamccaskill6472 me too. I have chills.
Janis jerks tears from me every time😢🤘
Best version of this song that I've come across yet.
Played this performance so many times over the years. Still makes me cry. What a beautiful person that we lost the day janis slipped away.
Love you janis
always.
I'm 39 years old, going on 25 and this is the most beautiful thing I have ever heard. I play this for people all the time. Her voice.. My god, her voice.
She was a wonderful junkie. Rolling stone tried to save.
Ha Ha! Love your comment I'm 40 going on 26 😆 yes this fuckn song touches my soul
A unique voice that fit perfectly with a unique time in U.S. history.
Very well put✅️✅️✅️
There will never be someone like her ...she was absolutely stunning
This song is a master piece. Still love it in 2024.... She had such soul in Music..More difficult to ajjust in our daily life ! RIP Dear Janis
Sorry that you cant appreciate the original version....
You're so lucky to have had that teacher!! 😉😉
yumyumwhatzohai she was a six grader why you gotta be all snotty.
Jesse Perez - people as a group aren’t too smart.
never heard a sensual, soul, psychedelic voice like hers 😍
legends never die ❤
My first concert was Janis 1970. I got to meet her, she hugged and kissed my cheek and told me I was "cool.' I still have her autograph she gave me that day. I can still see her in my mind, she looked so happy.
What an awesome memory!! Thanks for sharing it.
Who! How Amazing. What an experience
I grew up during the 60s
How lucky you are! What a memory to treasure
❤❤❤
Конечно!!! Эта музыка вечна!!! Особенно, в исполнении этой прекрасной певицы!!! 2023 still listening!!!
Omg, her voice is unbelievable, the instruments--- just perfect💕
All these years later, and she still makes the hair raise up on the back of my neck when she sings this song.
me to but in my case its torture.

@@godovscore hey dumbass why are you listening to her?
The greatest female rock and blues singer of all time. Taken way too early. Wow.
Its true
It s a wonderful song
Je crois sérieusement que George Gershwin n’avait même pas rêvé d’une interprétation aussi magistrale.
I seriously believe that George Gershwin had not even dreamed of such a masterful interpretation.
One thing about Janis....she never held back. She gave you her all. And we loved her for it. Nothing like her since. Her ability to emotionally connect is unmatched anywhere. Gone too soon. RIP Janis...we cannot forget you. We can only love you and thank you for leaving us such treasures.
I cry for Joplin every time I hear her. She was a true soul
this is the song of crying
I cry because she reminds me of my mother who died of lung cancer a few years ago..
Me too!
I liked her minimalist approach in the beginning and throughout the song....punctuated with deep soul....nobody is like her...and there never will be again.
Agree about the minimalist approach but the album version did that better. Good version here but the keyboards got in the way.
Why ?
David Hutchinson what about amy winhouse
What about her?
Who??? Are you fucking kidding me???
El amor de mi vida pasada... La única Janis joplin ❤️ la escucho desde que tengo 6 años de edad por qué mi madre la escuchaba, música que adoro.
If you’re new to older music you’ll notice everything is about the music.
There’s new music like that on a lesser scale. But I really appreciate that I’m this. This is the most chilling/haunting song I’ve heard.
God Damn, my soul just left my body.
Janis Joplin was a deity...there I said it...and how the guitar weeps in this song helps me feel and repair my soul so that I may live 500 more years..
We are all "vessels" for "The Deity" to utilize, if we want to be used in His service! 👀🧐🙏🏽
Follow Christ Jesus
This is probably my favorite song by Janis. Her voice is perfect for it.
Nikad je neću prestati slušati, ni za hiljadu godina !!!
I appreciate an artist who can take a well known piece and make it there own.
This Version is ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE ~
Mbak junis juplin sakestu kulo remen damel kulo kenter marang lurik lagune your my legend blues
Linda melodia. As guitarras e a voz de Janis, inigualáveis. (Natal-RN 🇧🇷)
A voz rouca e unica e as expressões dela...nossa...emocionante....fico extasiada...
Simplesmente fantástico!Juiz de Fora-MG
Concordo totalmente. (interior do RN).
A melhor versão que eu escutei até hoje é de Ella Fitzgerald, estou esperando meu CD da Vera Lynn chegar para ver como é a versão dela.
2022 ~~🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
love janis, if she had lived, i always imagined her in a rocking chair on the porch of her house (maybe near the beach & ocean) relaxing with a pack of smokes, casually drinking but in a luxurious way of her favorite southern comfort and singing with her raspy delicious voice that would echo throughout time. mindblowing fact about her, she self taught herself to sing, so im very proud of her.
I just finished to see the documentary "Janis" : I love so much her smile ! I wish I was young at this time...
+Dorypowa Iwas young at this time and loved her smile........AND VOICE!
waw lucky you !!
did you see her on stage or...? :)
Her voice is half vocal, half "magic instrument".. beyond world..
Magic, scary, I'm 73
Voix rare , d'une grande intensité inégalable encore de nos jours .
私の好きな方です。素晴らしい曲をありがとうございます。私は今現在も聴いています。
A mastery of voice and interpretation. Just incredible.
The bands of the 60s and 70s have a "heavy sound" that most heavy metal bands today cannot do, and it seems that the old bands did it without realizing it, I cannot understand.
They played from their souls
When musicians were highly trained
Greed took over.. back tracks, voice overs, tuning, image, bullshit. I’m so glad I was born in the early 70’s and my parents were hippies.. so much heart and soul.. not like the shit on the radio now.. pure shit.. singing about wet pus%y. Fkn shame!
I’m new to blues music and I’m trying to build a good playlist. Have you any suggestions?
Many original great blues singers did "Summertime."
Another song was "House of the Rising Sun."
"Midnight Rambler" (The Allman Brothers are linked with this one, but's much older.)
"Back Door Man" (The Doors covered this in the '60's, but it goes much further back than that.)
"Come Into My Kitchen" (Robert Johnson)
"Where Did You Sleep Last Night?" (Leadbelly)
It's so rare to find a song amazingly perfect like this one!
There is God's song by etta James. And a few by Mr waits.
ロックは耳だけで聴くものに非ず。その覚悟を全身で感じるのだ。
アレンジも格好いい。
Damn, that girl's voice was an orchestra. Not content to sing one note at a time, she sang several, and our souls stood still and attended. She lived too deeply and burned up because of it and left us the glad recipients of all her tears and joys. Just magical and never forgotten.
Lindo dia divina música 😅
seeing her in-person was THE highlight of my crazy youth.....it was 'crazy' seeing her perform......
+Andrew Prokopis Dude, you are so lucky and so blessed. I want to be you.
Andrew Prokopis Awesome thnx for sharing.
Janis was an angel, sent to us so that we can love, learn, adore & miss her
Tender agree with u 100%
This is my favorite performance of Summertime, precisely because it sounds so haunting and eerie.
I am 32 and it is 2021 and this song still brings tears to my eyes. Janis Joplin is a legend. She was truly the first true female rock star.
Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose ...
(Janice Joplin)
+zoki pokeski I think Kris Kristofferson wrote that line/song.
actually, Kris Kristoffesen -- janis sang it, he wrote it
I can't help but smile every time I hear this.
James Gurley's guitar slays me.
Great tune ! There will NEVER be another JANIS !!!!
One of my favorite Janis Joplin songs.
I think it’s a given that she was truly a one off ❤
A imagem de Janis de costa no início do vídeo é fantasmagórica e icônica, obra prima da cultura do ocidente!
Voz forte! Presença forte!
Mulher foda da porra!!!
Too many people in out teens in the 60's and on judged Janice because of her looks and not her amazing talent. She was a great woman who was hurting. She was the best Female Entertainer ever.
I'm surprised the Music Industry didn't have some hot looking Tart lipsynch Janis's vocals like what happened with CC Music Factory when they had a pretty, slim model lipsynch the slightly chubby Martha Washington's vocals(Martha sued and won).
the BEST...
This music is a masterpiece of world music!
This woman is phenomenal untll now and forever.
She was an angel!
R.I.P Janis! we love you!
She came from another galaxy, she was more than human. I will always love here and miss her, she, with this unbelievable voice and this heart and soul.
Thank you Janis!.

My first album was Cheap Thrills, even though I had no record player and I had to play it at a friend's house. I still have the album, and I still feel that tension in my chest as I listen to Janis. No one comes close to what she does.
In 1982 I got some stored Janis Albums my dad had from 10 years or so prior. I was living in Germany at the time and she rocked my fucking soul. I was sooooo hooked on Joplin and I turned on a bunch of people to her even though she was already long dead. She was out of this world. If I ever get three wishes, 1st one....see Janis Live
❤
Not only does she have an incredible voice, but she improvises throughout the whole song. Wow.
a guitar solo that would make anyone cry, holy!!!!!!
We played this song at my father’s funeral as an intro to gather all attendants. He showed me the song a few years ago, now I realise how perfect it is. I hope he enjoys his summertime now ❤️
💥💝🔮
hard to beleive she can sing one word and blow my mind and give me chills SUMMERTIME. THANK YOU GOD FOR LETTING US BORROW JAN.
The first time I heard this song I was asleep in Austin Texas and someone's clock radio went off and this was playing. It was still dark out, a warm night with the window open and a warm breeze blowing in. I didn't know if this was even real... In fact, I'm still not sure.
Love this. Paints a picture.

It wasn't real, its the consensus of a dream; that a soul had a voice to touch us all

No an sufrido
Son personas que deben tener heces atravesadas en el oído que les impide disfrutar semejante pieza musical.
Te contesto señor,Dios mio,q voz,q fuerza ,q sentimiento,creo q te he contestado.
Gracias Janis
