- As British Airways Flight 9 works its way across the Indian Ocean, mysterious glowing lights appeared on the windshield and engines of the plane. Was this St. Elmo's fire, a rare weather phenomenon?

Pilot: I'll be right back, don't touch the hyperdrive
*steps out of cockpit*
First officer to engineer: oh what's the worst that can happen
When Han leaves chewie alone in the cockpit
I’ve got a baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad feeling about this
Wow I just remembered every time that it's said the worst turns out to go to work and it immediately attacks is that person who said it
Well what can I say so do you want your eggs sunny-side up or nose side down
They went to ludicrous speed.
For those curious the cause was volcanic ash from the eruption of Mt Galunggung which is on West Java, Indonesia. All four engines failed, but they were able to restart and climb to cruise past the mountains. They landed safely at Perdanakusuma International Airport though visibility was an issue. They relied on instrument landing system. When they landed even taxiing was an issue but everyone survived. There's a full episode ftom Mayday up on RUclips about Flight 9. 😊
2:44 I suspect the Flames of Pentecost looked like St. Elmos fire. The burning bush of Moses and the Tornado Flame that freed the Israelites also seemed to be the Holy Spirit manifesting as St. Elmos fire.
When Elmo doesn’t get his crayons
Elmo hasn't been the same since he lost his favorite crayon
@Chandran S no
Oof
Lol
XD
I just love the reaction of the two pilots,it shows utmost experience and adequate training just no panic at all,,,,what surprises is,who hears "all engines have failed" and buckles up their seat belts?Very brilliant pilots
That's when it began to be a serious emergency.
*ITS BRIGHTER HERE*
Yeah, Smithsonian might want to remove that outro.
To be fair, flying through volcanic ash did cause quite a light show out the windows, which probably made it at least a bit brighter
I love the "okay this is serious" moment, where both pilots look at each other and put on the shoulder harnesses
Therapist: Supersonic 747 doesn't
*Literally the video in front of him*
RIP Eric Moody
1:38 Elmo when he lost his favorite crayon
1:37 that looks like star wars
Who else just thinks the outside view of the plane would be an absolutely insane wallpaper?
I love how these videos always have a question that never gets answered
da fuq why am i watching this in a airport lounge
deathwish
Unbelievable crew! Everybody played a big part in saving the plane including the flight engineer
I remember watching this episode when I was 8 and it gave me the chills
"Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. We have a small problem. All four engines have stopped. We are doing our damnedest to get them going again. I trust you are not in too much distress."
My cousin's grandmother's best friend's niece's babysitter was the passenger on that flight!
they have entered into hyperspace I've seen this in star wars
well if they interviewed the crew that means most if not everyone survived so thank goodness for that.
From the cockpit it looks like their going through hyper space
*Twist: It was a 747-SUPE-*
Edit: tf why is this vid so satisfying
Ada yang tau gak ini kejadian di Indonesia pesawat maskapai luar negri masuk erupsi gunung Galunggung Jawa barat
Dah banyak yg tau.. situ aja yg baru tau
Lu aja kali yang baru tau nih kejadian dah tahun 1982
I would’ve had a heart attack. Thinking we just got hacked by aliens.
How to bake a plane?
Google: *Pictures of cakes shaped like aircrafts*
Bing:
They all landed safely without seeing the runway.
British airline pilots are great at not panicking in the cockpit
I was on that plane. Lost 15 pounds crapping my pants.
I think Elmo's fire make engine flames
Their plane was like: Mach 1
Ughhhh always leaves us in the cliffhanger
"the 4 Engines have failed"
Captions: Before Angel to Fail
The engines flamed out because they went from Drive mode to Sports mode and it ran out of fuel
Meant to say the AC system was the reason for the smell. But the reason engines went out is because glass had melted all over the inside of turbines in the jet engines. They are freaking lucky any of them started back up.
*"TURN ON THE DEFLECTOR SHIELDS"*
They were flying through volcanic ash from an erupting volcano down below them, that’s why there was a sulfuric smell
where can I see full episode of this
Engine 4 is the problem
Engine 4 is always the first engine to fail, catch on fire, or have a problem
All engines failed!
Captain. Time to go extreme mode
Mountain : Bye little plane
British airways flight9 : Noooo
Elmo when he doesent have his beautiful crayons
Now i wanna become a captain and fly a massive passenger plane in volcano cloud to see that laser pointer blue stuff cuz it look cool while losing all engine
The livery was so much better then now
That plane turned ultra instinct
They are flying at hyperspeed
I love the British Accents on these videos.
Everyone : *Talks about Engine 4*
Me : Haha ELmO nAmED vOlCAnO gOes Boom Boom
That was a Hyperspace Mode on!
If this is the flight I'm thinking of, they were flying thru volcanic ash. After they lost altitude and got the engines restarted, they returned right back to the ash and repeated this process several times before it occurred to them to just maintain a lower altitude where there was no ash. Really bad troubleshooting.
one of the volcano in indonesia erupted that day.thats what makes those st.elmo fire.
Volcanic ash having this effect wasn’t a commonly known phenomenon at the time. It wasn’t always apparent when they were in the ash and when they weren’t. It’s not like they were flying through thick black ash, it wasn’t easy to see. It’s not like they got a pre-flight briefing of what altitudes the ash was at with the exact coordinates of where it would be. They are also flying at night making it even harder to see any ash. They are also under a tremendous amount of stress. There are these things called mitigating factors. It would be wise to consider them before condemning the pilots.
On the bright side, all variants of the 747 make for pretty decent gliders.
title: Was This Plane Engulfed in St. Elmo's Fire?
me: well arent you supposed to tell us what the plane was engulfed in?
boeing 747 737 max 8 and a320 neo planes are my fav planes
Space Ghost origin story
3:38 flying through the galaxy
I didn’t know we had the tech to travel at light speed
If I was the pilot, I would take a photo and use it as my phone wallpaper.
The guy on the left sounds like Peter Rabbit
Wish I could be as lit as Engine no.4
Mini air crash investigations did a great video on this with a pilot interview
Looks like there in hyperspace
elmo from seseme street:

"I told you not to push the warp drive button!"
It's volcanic ash
This what a pre E feels like
Thought the engines would enter hyperdrive mode and send the plane flying at ultra speeds
"Engine four is lit"
Probably a Razer model.
Carl Sagan 👌😘😘😍😆😂💯💯💯
Carl Sagan #blazeit
Carl Sagan #420BLAZEIT
engine 420 blaze it
They're hitting the hyperdrive.
Best comment I've seen in a week.
Edit: wow so many comments from the last time I've been here.
Chewie, jump to lightspeed!
"Punch it Chewie!"
was about to say
to infinity and beyond
Ending: They landed safely; turned out there was a volcanic eruption nearby which caused it
Damn it give this man his cookie! he absolutely deserved it
yea lol
***** not sure if you're being sarcastic or not lol but I watched the documentary after watching this little snippet because I was interested n decided I would share it bcuz I know how the cliffhangers on this channel r annoying
Where can we watch it, the full version?
Thanks!
engine 4 is always the problem
“engine four is down”
“Engine four has exploded”
“Engine four malfunctioned”
“Engine four is lit”
Science With Cozmo unless there's only two or three engines on the plane by default
Science With Cozmo just remove engine 4 naw jk
Vladimir Lenin yeah
So weird...
Science With Cozmo ENGINE FOUR HAS FALLEN OFF
Someone installed Asgard technology on the aircraft. They just accidentally boosted the shield to 100%.
idk
Benjamin Hershey lol
Benjamin Hershey I
lmao lol
Benjamin bbvcg
Pinpricks of light? Not acting like St. Elmo's fire? Sulfuric smell? Volcanic ash, people. Volcanic ash can generate a huge amount of static electricity. They're lucky that they survived that level of ash.
It wasn't even volcanic ash that caused this because I've seen the entire documentary of this
+Michelle Lynn Are you sure? When they left Jakarta, a volcano blew ash where the plane was, causing St. Elmo's Fire. I was the one that ACTUALLY watched it. Good thing everyone survived because of the brave pilots.
+Michelle Lynn If there was no volcanic ash and no thunderstorm, this wouldn't have happened. The documentary said there were very small rocks (or the volcanic ash) hitting the airplane causing St. Elmo's Fire. Again, i actually watched the documentary
you are right, I watched it too. The Ash created friction causing the St elmos fire and it also damaged the engines by clogging them.
Yup it is volcanic ash. The documentary is called "AIR DISASTERS: Falling from the Sky" and is about the Jakarta Incident (it's in the description)
Why is it always engine 4?
` shockwaveBJ IKR
Cuz it is
Lol
Ikr 😡😡😡😡😡
_ Sh0cKwavE goddamnit engine 4
It was not St. Elmo's fire. It was because they flew through volcanic ash in the air. The weather radar can only detect moisture, and the ash is dry, which is why it did not see it.
It's not just that the ash is dry. The weather radar didn't pick it up because the ash particles that get that high up are significantly smaller than water particles. The weather radars couldn't pick it up because of the small size.
weather radar (doppler radar) can pick up any particles solid or liquid. it would have show on radar.
Doesn’t make any sense at all because they can’t see any volcanic ashes in the dark.
St Elmo's fire is one of the major signs that you're flying through an ash cloud
Chewy, hit the hyperdrive
Dmck04 3421 really starwars
For a moment I thought is was Star Wars
Wait,your living under my bed?
I always thought there was a person under my bed!
Me too
hyper drive
+Yemin the lemon I think you seen the conjuring 2 movie
Their hyperdrive was broken
the fire looks like hyperspace.
Luca Silva then what is it exactly?
@@char3509 It is caused by friction from the plane volcanic sulfur from the nearby volcano.
the plane had a secret hyperdrive buton
Mayday Air Crash Investigation had an in depth hour long episode on this incident. Still my favorite series about plane crashes. Smithsonian abruptly cuts off and leaves you wanting more.
Fly orbit airlines, now with new 747 hyperdrives.
Space Boi ay u copied my VA airlines name
Why lie? Just tell the truth already. The plane went into warp!
Dante Jamoralin No, they went too fast and warped to light speed. Don't talk to me about volcanoes, it's self-advertising, Dante's Peak.
Dante Jamoralin This plane did. It's literally right in the video!
Dante Jamoralin "You have profound mental retardation with an iq of 21". Exactly, you have profound mental retardation with an iq of 21.
Dante Jamoralin Exactly, YOU have that. Why do you keep admitting it over and over? Lol
Dante Jamoralin It's getting funnier and funnier that you keep admitting it. Therefore you are crazy Dante. DANTE is crazy.
*The flux capacitor was was on the fritz... they needed more garbage.*
Full-Metal_Jacob We need the Spice.
@TheBrodsterBoy should've come to earth
What happens when you use that cheap plutonium.
I read garbage as "they need more cabbage" 🤦
Great scott!
St Elmos Fire literally looks like the plane is time traveling.
you are travelling at a light speed,to the pluto!
Matthew Kurtz star trek
ejat rblz mars
For star wars fans(like me)it would be hyperdrive
If they are travelling at the speed of light, the would have crossed the equator 7 times per second
It's not speed of light
Rezzie Libiran Nerd btw, r/woooosh
Okay Chewy, hit the hyperdrive!
In the end, they landed safely.
However, the cause of this phenomenon was a volcanic ash cloud.
A stratovolcano known as Galunggung exploded on June 23rd 1982 in Java Indonesia, releasing hazardous amounts of ash and sulfur into the atmosphere.
Back in 1982, and especially in Indonesia, they did not have the technology for aircraft to detect ash clouds. Hell, people barely knew that ash would destroy engines back then.
This flight, at the time, set a world record for the longest glide in a non-purpose-built aircraft. That record would later be broken by the Gimli Glider incident in Canada.(Hell of a story if you're not familiar with it)
Theyre Riding in Hans SpaceCraft
no not that shape
What starwars
*HIT THE HYPERDRIVE BOYS!*
No, star wars
@@somechanneloverthere1190 its from star wars
the plane is actually the millennium falcon and it hit the hyperdrive
liam codnerd yea
In the end they found out it was a volcano near Jakarta erupted. That’s why it had some sulfuric smell to the smoke.
Probably flew over Sesame st.
It's *NOT* brighter here
Jake Thursby it's pretty damn dark
Yeah, the fire is bright.
I love ACI. Amazing actors and stories
*oH my lORd, Look aT engine foUR!*
Seeing the paint fade away from the engines is creepy
3:42 looking like there gonna grab there swords
1:37 starship 747 request landing in Star Wars airport
What happened was the plane went through a volcanic ash caused by the eruption of Mount Galunggung, at the end the four engines turned on again and they landed safely at an airport in Jakarta.
I've only seen St Elmo's Fire twice in my 60 years in this mortal world. the first time as a young teen heading from Ohio into WV. It was raining, ?& we'd just past the point where we usually stopped to look into our arm of the Milky way Galaxy. Beautiful sight, to be sure. Anyway, further on, we took a downhill left-hander, ?& right before the turn, I looked out the right side window to see two balls of St Elmo's Fire ( as dad told me it was) one red & one greenish blue, dancing on top of a rain-soaked split-rail fence. Any time they got close to each other, they repelled, as if each were of a like charge. The second time, Sharon & I were on our honeymoon, driving over top of the Appalachians. We happened to be driving THROUGH a thunderhead, & the air seemed to sparkle with white sort of dots. they very shortly began to look like the effect you get with a starlight lens filter. these sparkles then got bigger &/or more plentifull, & sucked together to form a lightening bolt. But the bolt was more like a huge glow we drove through. The noise was more terrible then any lightening bolt one would normally experience! This happened in august/september 1977.
unionrdr and no one cares..... kinda sad cause it’s neat
Sir, looks like we are re-entering the atmosphere. Deploy heat shields!
err0r It was clearly a joke.
"And that's when it started to become a serious emergency"
**Cuts**
"Smithsonian - It's brighter here"
Nice cutoff, Smithsonian.
St.Elmos fire is not correct ts called HITTNG TH HYPERDRIVE
2:37 charged creeper attacked the engine
