thanks to all those scientists who try with everything they have to save people :D
We do what we can with what we've got
Tanvir Hossain engineers *
Engineers. Not scientists
@Hexocoxene Is one hella of a drug depends what scientists and what field. Physicists, biologists, chemists, are as respectable as engineers. Other science fields are all useless
Ownage Zizou psychology?!
0:02 the airplane says "ow"
Ow it said that so funny
Haha good one
+Joaquin Pinto (GOKNICKSGO) hehe
+Joaquin Pinto (GOKNICKSGO) hehe
I was a chemical engineer that made those composite materials. I am so very grateful for there hard work to keep us all safe in the skies
Thank your for your contribution/work
*their
Are you sure you're a chemical engineer?
Thank you very much!
also handy to charge your iphone fast.
HA!
Might need a transformer ;)
Fuck iPhone
Your phone would die permanently some stuff would melt some overheat and god knows about the circuit board.
True....
Pretty.... SHOCKING!!!!!
Fuck off
+Slazenger Strike thats mean!
OHH I GET IT
Ba dum tss
[GD] Cleb good one!
My dad was on an airplane that got struck by lightning
The plain was fine but everyone's ears were not ok
H O T damn, also plain?
PLANE not plain
Painful plane
@Ryan Graves Do you expect us to believe you when you spell like that...?
@@jamiackerrr2326 if he lie its still funny tho😂
What I expected from this video:
Lightning hits plane and it explodes then a quick cut to
Smithsonian, It’s brighter here.
@@abdurrahmanusman2498 blood for the blood god lol
So..... Planes are lightning proof?...
Effectively, yeah.
Several commercial flights get struck by lightning every year, but normally it doesn't make the news because nothing bad happens. ;)
Maureen Lycaon Thats good, thank you! It makes me worry less not that i know what my next flight will be or where will it take me..
The Screemu Wublin
:)
Happened to me once.... Its scary
Richard Bosnak absolutely right my uncle's plane Got struck
my last trip (Airbus A330) was hit by lightning, I saw a bright white light inside the cabin with a strong voice of lightning... It was exciting, but a bit scary
Realy you saw a lightning inside the cabin?
Gabriel Micu Yes I did.. I saw a bright white light inside
That's not normal lol.
Gabriel Micu He means the flash.
Dont you mean the flash that can run fast?
Probably the most conclusive video on this channel. Other videos just end abruptly
Agreeable
..Woah,I never acc knew that those mechanics or whatever done THAT much for us to survive.I never knew it needed that MUCH detail and even the smallest mistake can trigger something to go wrong:(.It's so delicate and I'm really grateful:)
Yep :police: ohhhhh Yeah
Correction; the aluminum shell acts as a Faraday cage.
I was just looking for this comment. Congratulations !
ok, NERD
The Faraday shield!!..thank you mister Michael Faraday!!
...absolutely nothing happens.
The Dude when I was little I was afraid it was going down during a lightilng storm
Well thats shocking.
ba dum tiss
Nice one
fuck ps4 i want a lightning machine for christmas
u
Jacob Laney same
You'll be Thor or Zeus
Dangerous though.
Thank you scientists
Asif hasiyev engineers*
geordi rendum they are often interchangeable
Asif hasiyev, thanks god for giving us brains and aluminum
Nature is so fascinating!
I love how they model lightning strikes on tiny planes 😄
Thank God.
Thank you Scientists, for saving lives.
wait a sec why am i watchin a bunch of your airplane crashing vids when next week i’m goin on an airplane
When lightning strikes your plane barf bags and adult disposable diapers become high demand items onboard.
Nice presentation thanks to each supporters, may I know what is the thickness of protective mesh and the name of metal for used in to this great job ?
I manufacture the composites used on these aircrafts. It’s basically a roll of a sheet of glue that has copper and aluminum screen pressed into it. These products are then applied to the interior of the plane during the manufacturing process.
"Aluminum"
exactly. Thats so unussual pronunciation. "Alluminum", first time i hear this. I was also confused !!
BecauseICanTBH We don't add an imaginary I you Americans get rid of it for some reason 😂
"Imaginary 'i'" You cut it out for no reason, just like you cut the letter 'u' from half your words like "Colour to Color", despite the fact that removing those letters completely changes how the word should be pronounced.
American English is a mess that makes no grammatical sense.
JenModding yeah, it changes how it should be pronounced... and it’s pronounced differently. As well, English in general is simply not very phonetic. Hell, we only have five letters for vowels, when we have way more. As well, none of that is grammar.
@@treeaboo that i is made up and the british just added it
This made me feel much safer on my flight back to sweden❤️
One point twenty-one gigawatts!
The protective mesh should route the lightning to the airplane's flux capacitor so that it can travel back in time.
When the lightning hits the plane the plane is like " whatever "
Nice to see a short Smithsonian Channel video about aircraft where a plane doesn't crash at the end.
I've been in a plane that was struck by lightning. There was a really loud sound and the plane shook pretty hard but that's all that happened.
I remember that when me and my mum was flying back to our country, my mum was asleep and I was looking out the window at night...
We were at a country that I don't know... It was raining and there was lightning...
I saw the lightning in the clouds and it was beautiful...
I love this channel
I had no idea it was that rare ("on average once per year"). I've actually been flying when the plane I was in was struck. It hit the wing on my side of the plane and scared me, but we definitely did not feel a thing. The turbulence from the wind and the first failed attempt at landing was scarier (we had to pull up and circle a while before successfully landing on the 2nd attempt). Pilots are simply amazing to me, with how nervy they must be to fly for years and years through such situations.
Godzilla movie brought me here. +1 awesome video.
That was so cool science is awesome..
Awesome and simple technology.
I was on a plane, probably when I was in second grade, coming back from a vacation, and there was a MASSIVE thunderstorm which is really uncommon where I am, and we flew right threw it- my dad told me that the technology was meant to just let lightning pass through but I SWEAR it zapped through the plane and made the lights flicker a couple times- maybe I was too young to remember but dang flying through a lightning storm was so cool
Our brains sometimes creates a false memory right as we speak. Basicly a delusion. And at a young age and old age, its More common
Did you service the lightening successful and arrive home safely after being hit.?
I meant did you survive the flight after being hit by the lightening, or did you die from the crash?
I am an aviation technical activist. Your video was very useful. Thank you so much.
Kugan Kandiah
Who screamed between 0:01-0:03 when lightning hit the plane 😂 or I'm the oly one heared this.
I also heard it!
Not me
Ahhh it's unfortunate that the "It's Brighter Here" end bumper was made years later. That'd be appropriate for this
That was pretty striking
Nothing happens
The Lightning goes through the plane and down to earth
Why is this so??
wow i am a big fan of yours
thanks a lot
wow cool!
One time when I was just staring out the window, I saw another plane get hit by lightning and was freaking out that I thought something bad was gonna happen. Nobody seemed to care as if it was normal 😂
I was in that A380 I remember, all lights went off for a couple mins.
0:34 wow i did not know it was that beautiful
That's so cool
Looks like someone forgot to turn on airplane mode on their phone.
wow. I did not now that. thanks. ille use that today
I was doing maybe my 50th flight London - Copenhagen and our plane did get hit by a small lightning. All i saw was incoming orange/fire colour light and then the plane was pushed and we lost light for maybe light a micro second. After that it was all fine. The pilot did confirm we were hit by the lightning
I agree
Cool :D
Good charging opportunities!
1:38 I'll finally be able to become a star! 😄
If lightning strikes your plane, then you would need to rely on a swarm of bees to land your plane vertically
Very Interesting✅
interesting about storing energy of such a bolt
I was wondering about this exact thing when I first heard of all composite airplanes...general aviation is actually quite a ways ahead of the airlines when it comes to use of composites...if lightning struck an ALL composite airplane, it'd be a really bad day for everyone onboard...I figured they had a solution...this one is actually a lot simpler than the ones I had considered haha
Honestly I figured it would be something like that, I was more curious as to what it would feel/sound like to be in a 747 when it happened
In British English, we call it "Aluminium" though, & this is the standard by IUPAC.
What happens if one part of that metal mesh on a certain composite panel is broken?
Nice
I’m a flight attendant and I have had 3 aircrafts that I was working on/flying on struck by lightning. It’s an incredible experience!
Lightning bolt!
It's brighter here.
When a lighning strikes your airplane...
Nobody:
Smithsonian: IT'S BRIGHTER HERE
How do they come up with this stuff
Is it just me because I’m going on a plane to turkey from Scotland and on Thursday it’s thunder and lighting and I’m heavy scared so I am watching theses video😭😂
You'll be fine it's literally electric proof
Did you survive...reply back plz 😂
Rip hope i see u in heaven😪🙏
science rules!
Whao. Cool
Holy crap I'm never going in one of those death traps
Wow.
Jingle bells, Jingle bells, lightning strikes a plane.
Thor: Hold my Beer
when the title is titled like a meme
I hope everyone in that flight is ok
This is why I stopped traveling with the guy from the movie powder. Now I just travel with Dr Strange and ask him how this is going to play out before I leave the airport
How you targted the place that the bolt gona hit?!
I saw a plane get struck a couple of years ago as it was passing over the highway to land. It just went in one end, out the other and to the ground. Plane just carried on like it was nothing.
what is electronic is basic shield
I got an Airport City ad at the start of this video.
I was on a flight to Ireland and lighting struck. It was very loud that even the flight attendants got scared.
I thought that when technology is new and better we are safer, but now I know that it's actually the opposite
What happened to electrostatic shielding
Heavy raining and thunderstorms 💔
I'm trying to be popular in one of my planes I like KLM 😙😙😙😙😙😙😙😙😙😙
Omg same and air france
klm is not a plane -_-
Mihaitzaofficial Gaming do you know airlines -_-
I'm a qatar guy but will love to try klm one day
Emirates
How about small airplanes like the Cesena172 or the prop planes
I know I’m super late but in some scenarios you can fly the plane over rain and thunder clouds
Hope the Wright Brothers had that metal thing
Soooo planes are steel flying type with the lightning rod ability that makes it immune to electric attacks
Oh wait so logically the older planes were thought to be safer against lightning?
I've flown in turbulance like at 1.10 before. Leaving Gander Canada (Canada?) And took off into a heavy wind. Was on the left side and that engine was moving around mpre than I've ever seen. Some crazy s**t. 0_o
Schocking lol
So when the people are inside, isn't it very loud when the bolt hits or something!?
PLOT TWIST - the planes actually struck the lightning :O
What are the real benefits to using composites instead of all aluminum. I am sure the first thing these manufacturers will say is strength, longevity and weight but I am really sure it's all about cutting corners and saving a penny.
We are looking for a company that provides materials for lightning strike protection and other composite based structures. Can you suggest one?
Dexmet is a company known internationally, especially for work in the development of lightning strike protection for aircraft and other composite-based structures. Their clients include most of the world’s major airlines and aerospace equipment manufacturers, as well as a wide range of others in fields such as utilities, telecommunications, and commercial electronics.

So scary I can’t believe it 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱
moral-walk barefoot in rain
I misread this as 'When your lightning strikes airplane'.
