What Happens When Lightning Strikes a Plane

- It was a cold rainy day in October of 2016. Huge balls of hail crashed into the ground. In short, it wasn’t a good day to fly, and Wow Air Flight 404 headed from Reykjavík, Iceland to Paris, France would soon understand why…
That iconic fuchsia-colored plane was struck by a massive bolt of lightning not long after taking off! But did she go down? You’d think so given that a single lightning bolt carries 1 billion volts of electric force with it. So, an exterior burnt black like a piece of coal? A shredded fuselage? A fire on board? No, nope, and negative.

SUMMARY:
- Lightning doesn’t hit airplanes that often these days. Security rules don’t allow pilots to fly into a storm front. The plane should go around a thundercloud but never above or under it.
- Ok, but if a lightning strike doesn’t bring a plane down or do any threatening damage, then why do they avoid storms? Well, it’s not because of the lightning itself but extreme turbulence that might happen inside a storm.
- As it is now, with the existing safety rules in place, lightning hits a plane 1-2 times a year if the aircraft is used regularly. But even then, it doesn’t usually lead to any serious circumstances.
- Out of 3,000 plane-related incidents since 2000, only 8 of them were caused by lightning strikes.
- Retired pilot Chris Hammond explains that before an aircraft goes into service, it gets tested for all possible incidents. That includes a lightning strike simulation.
- The bolt usually hits the plane in the area of its nose and leaves near the tail and partially through the wings. It does that because it chooses the path of least resistance.
- Even if the flight makes it to the destination and everything seems ok, technicians still carefully examine the aircraft once it’s on the ground to see if there’s any micro damage to its skin.
- Spots where the lightning entered and exited the plane’s exterior usually look like small melted holes no more than half an inch in diameter. They can be fixed very quickly.
- But can passengers notice anything on board during this impromptu light show? Sure, you can hear a loud strike and see flashes outside the plane.
- Lightning is not a problem in modern aviation. A lot of design solutions protect airplanes from any severe damage, and the risk of getting into an accident caused by lightning is next to zero.
- In fact, the biggest risk caused by a lightning strike (other than any turbulence going on out in that storm) is that passengers who notice it can get scared and start panicking.

One of the most beautiful sights I’ve ever seen was a lightning storm from above. Years ago I was on a flight over the US Midwest and the storm was obviously low enough to fly over. Gorgeous sight. I’ve never flown over a storm since.
Amazing.
I'm curious, how lightning looks on cloud?
I'm guessing, it may be flashing of white light over cloud ?
A year ago, our Class Party took place. I suddenly wanted to look out of the window. What I saw was this:
The sky turned completely brown and there was a lot of lightning. I thought it was the end of the world. So, that's the craziest weather I've ever seen.
wow..
The majesty of mud rain (far West Texas) and the eeriness of Thunder Snow (downtown St. Louis) was driving an auto both times (so was on public roads) thanks for your post here! Great stuff!

I actually was just struck by lightning in a plane on a flight from Boston to Nashville. I didn’t even believe it at first, but an attendant announced we were struck and all systems seemed ok. Looked this video up after getting home to see why we didn’t crash lol.

When I was younger, me and my dad flew a connected flight to Dhaka airport bangladesh from Heathrow, via doha, by an A330, it happened when we flew across Delhi when approaching dhaka, it was a really really strong lightning current, but the plane still survived and managed to land, but it was a go around
Your videos are awesome dude
In Georgia where I live, it was once so dry on a August night, that there was just lightning in a storm. No thunder, no rain.

The claim (made multiple times throughout this video) that lightning strikes on planes are infrequent is mistaken. As one article puts it, "Lightning strikes to airplanes are very common and on average, every airliner will be struck by lightning once a year." The generally agreed upon figure is that lightning strikes occur (on average) approximately once every 1,000 operating hours. As numerous industry and scientific sources attest, at this rate it is estimated that every five minutes an aircraft somewhere in the world is struck.
I work in an electromagnetic interference laboratory testing the effects of lightning strikes (among other things) on aircraft control systems, and can assure you that robust engineering (and rigorous testing) is devoted to ensuring that these systems continue to operate after being subjected to the force of a lightning strike.

Me: zzz 💤 am I there yet
I had to experience going through a real nasty thunderstorm recently and I was new to planes, I can definitely confirm I'm traumatized, I'm surprised were actually alive.
We were heading to the run way as well as other planes behind us, couldn't really see the clouds(it was nighttime) but then within seconds the airport got flooded with heavy rain and I could see flashes of light in the sky. We couldn't turn back cause we were about to take off, I was a lil scared.
When we were taking off the plane, we had a real struggle, once we were off ground, it was expected to have lil shakes, I was Reassuring my self once we get through the first layer of clouds we would be fine..but we weren't. Just 5 mins into flight we were having really bad turbulence, like we were violently shaken for a good minute, even to the point of our plane suddenly turn side to side pretty far. Everyone on the plane were very concerned and we all were looking at one another very worried but then in a split second our plane just dropped, it was so scary, it was like thud and you can feel were actually falling fast, everyone was screaming. my friend and I were holding onto each other screaming, it felt like like forever but it lasted for 10 seconds I think, then the plane suddenly stopped falling, i was so certain we were gonners. My friend is actually a rather frequent flyer, she likes planes, she told me that was by far the most worse thing that happened to her on a plane, she also thought we were doomed 😭
But thankful we made it, once we got out of the storm, I could see the storm clouds, it was actually rather scary but pretty how the thunder strikes were going off in the clouds behind us, the clouds also apeared like a explosion in slow-mo, also noticed it wasn't night time o^o it was just the clouds making it appear so
Your comment is super old but this is terrifying! I’m so sorry you had to go through that
I remember when there was snow and my mom my lil sis and me almost crashed because there was so much snow and slippery
when i was going to my country the flight shook like crazy
In the 1978 movie "Superman," lightning strikes Air Force 1 and blows the outer engine to pieces and also shatters the outer wingtip off. So the thought of lightning hitting a plane is easily terrifying to a lot of people.

So I was once peacefully sitting with my laptop in the balcony. Suddenly rain started pouring, so I moved away from the railing but still stayed in the balcony, then there were very strong winds, so strong that the trees in my neighbors house below my balcony were swinging so hard that I thought they were going to fall on the balcony. Still I stayed in the balcony. Soon thunder and lighting joined the party, and tags where I gave up and left the balcony. I ended up staying in bed for days afterwards. The strange thing is, it was the middle of summer that day, and it is said that when the storm happened, the roof of a mall collapsed whilst it was open.

To much people
Never fly in storms
Incoming storms
Never fly on storms
Good safety
Unless convinced about your video since I was linked to you from the Peruvian flight in 1971 video. Guess they were just testing out the static electrical powers of the plane when they flew into a rain cloud and killed everyone. But seriously I'm guessing it was made of aluminum since it was 1971?
Thank god-
I was kinda worried that we would all just burn and die sadly.
Much sadness.
But now we safe :D

Oh yeah I always wondered, do you use voice changer or is that your actual voice? 🤔
One day my family was on our boat. We was heading for Jomfruland, Norway. When we arrived, the docks was broke, lamp posts was fallen, and the electricy was gone. We had sailed in maybe 20 minutes from another island. We didnt see or hear a storm, and the people on Jomfruland said that the wind was on 33 metres per second. That is much. We didnt notice any storm, so this was a weird episode. Tell me what you think about this.
Maybe the event was happend few hours before even you were heading to jomfruland, maybe you were still at home already everything was happing in jomfruland and when you arrived everything was already happend
Whoever is a fan of brightside...give a like.😆😆!!
I live in Iceland and this is kinda funny cause I’ve flown with wow air a couple of times and a few months back wow air went bankrupt so I guess you don’t have to worry about running into Lightning’s any more😂😂
