I was completely shocked when I discovered that the Saab 2000 didn’t allow you to disengage the autopilot. I was even more shocked that the only reason why everyone is still alive is because a random glitch caused the autopilot to disconnect.
This episode should've been titled "Miraculous Failure" or something to that effect.
@Don we still love you, even tho crack is bad
Yeah. That design was dangerous. Hopefully a software update would allow the pilots to take manual control.
What are the odds of a plane getting hit by lightning and then saved by a one-in-a-billion computer glitch with 7 seconds to spare? Someone above has a very dark sense of humor.
Devil was playing games
They should've named this episode "Miracle Failure", because that's pretty much what happened: the plane was seconds from plunging into the sea when a one-in-a-billion computer glitch disengaged the autopilot, at which point the crew regained control and made a safe landing.
I can't understand - AP was set at 2k feet, pilots were wrestling against AP to climb but plane was pitched nose down under 2k feet 7 seconds away from impact with North Sea. It seems AP was trying to crash.
You seem very knowledgeable and I thought you might be able to shed some light on why AP was going below set 2k......thanks in advance.
The name “North Sea Nightmare” was still better than having either the word “Fatal” or “Deadly” every three episodes.
@@jamesfukfist8192 Autopilot was designed wrong. Anything the pilots did should have turned autopilot off.
@@TheSjuris At least the Autopilot should be very obvious when it is connected or not. Autopilot might be just set to heading control without altitude control.
Yeah
Finally! I'm not 8years late
Same
SAMEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yep
Same
What an overrated comment
As Fleetwood Mac would say, “Well, lightning strikes, maybe once, maybe twice.”
Four hours counts as early, okay. Since usually I’m about 10 years late
If you were on this flight you are insanely lucky to be alive.
There was a Pan American 707 that had a disasterous lightning strike over Elkton, Maryland in the very early 1960's.
Oh yeah! Flight 214!
Jesus after binging smithsonian for the last week I'm a bit more nervous to fly
Every avgeek never misses an episode

Sure
Excellent job guys!!
It’s weird because planes are made of aluminum which allows lightning to pass through it without any issues
Lightning didn't do anything but blind the pilots temporarily. This particular plane is dumb and is one of only a few planes in the world that does NOT disengage autopilot after pilot input. One of the pilots flew an airplane that was made by the same company but was of a different type and that plane disengages autopilot if lighting strikes, so since he was blinded, he automatically assumed the autopilot disengaged.
@@Alb410 ah ok
Why should autopilot disengaged after lightning strike, when nothing is damaged?
it didn't actually
@@rishavsharma7466 if it did, the plane wouldn’t have nose dived.
@@TheSjuris yeah! faulty computer alas!
@@rishavsharma7466 nope faulty engineering instead. The autopilot was designed to ignore and overrule human input.
Nice vid, not sure why the autopilot didn't disengage after the lightning strike.
The Saab 2000 is one of the only planes that doesn't have that feature. Now of course that feature has been added.
I CAN DIG IT!
That would be terrifying😳
Finally season 21 on smitsonian channel good news
I subbed
Very good voice ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
OMG! SEASON 21 ! 🙂🙂🙂🙂
Or Facebook.
@Luna Verret How can i find it, the series
@@santicardona777 they are bots for advertising
No, that’s not what caused it. If u want a spoiler, read more
They had the autopilot on, the pilot had trained on the Saab 340 where the autopilot would disconnect the autopilot. The plane wanted to descend after hey climbed to 4000, the only thing that saved them was a glitch in the autopilot, the plane’s autopilot also was special, it did not automatically disconnect. There was only a tiny light telling them if it’s on or off, and the warning that they were fighting the autopilot did not work because they were so focused on getting the plane to climb
but why didn't the autopilot stop the nose dive after they passed 2000 ft? Shouldn't the autopilot keep them at 2000 ft?
@@tedskala idk, I was asking that for the whole episode
Where is the link for the full video
Did the autopilot computer "lock" from the voltage surge?
Nope. The plane is just dumb and unlike other planes does not disengage autopilot when pilots put input into the controls. Lightning did nothing but disorientate and blind the pilots temporarily.
It was very scary
Scary , and I gotta board a plane at the moment from jfk , wish me luck
Put your trust in the Lord and have faith.
Good luck, I'm pretty sure it's gonna go well!
Yeah, Planes are safer than cars, don’t worry!
I mean do you freak out every time you get in a car? Probably not. Well, planes are way safer than cars. Your chances of dying from a fatal plane crash are 1 in 11 million. There's no reason to be worried. Good luck on ur flight, anyway. Hope you enjoy your flight and have fun at your destination
@@imblack011 I'm not freaking out I just want to land safe , a car h can survive a plane falling 27000 feet nobody won't survive. But I landed safe
Nice
Anyone else notice the cursor on the PFD? Just a tiny mistake there that once I saw it I couldn't unsee

lol the plane crash
Where’s the rest of the video?
Something tried to kill them.
Something tried to save them.
And also, both my above sentence have same no. Of letters. Still the second line took extra space than the first
@Don that's sad to hear
Oh ok
Just watched the whole episode and it makes NO sense. They never ask THE most obvious question!!!
Why didn't the autopilot continue to try to force the 2000 foot altitude as the plane took a nose dive well below 2000 feet, with controls continually applied to make the aircraft climb, if the autopilot was the cause of the "heavy controls"?!
The show claims the cause was that the autopilot did not disengage, making the controls "heavy" because the autopilot was fighting to keep the aircraft at 2000 feet as the crew fought to climb. The show then claims the crew only gained control when a computer glitch caused the autopilot to disengage 7 seconds before impact, well below 2000 feet! Was the the autopilot attempting to maintain 2000 feet or not?
The trim had been at full nose down position and the plane was descending so rapidly and steeply that the automated systems took too long to bring the trim position back to normal and level the plane in time, hence the plane kept descending past 2000 feet. The autopilot put the trim in such an aggressive nose down angle in the first place as a result of it fighting against the pilots’ opposing control inputs.
Ok to be honest i dont be in planes alot but i really really love airplanes so i turn out to stay alive because i somehow use new commercial planes like the new airbus A350 brussels airlines turkish airlines and the african plane named Uganda airlines.
Is that flybe
Loganair flying for Flybe
Un less it damaged some of the insterments
Wow I’m not year’s late
Why auto pilot didn't level the plane at 2000 ?
Finally
They couldn’t see the runway there’s too many clouds. It’s a simple as that isn’t it?🧐🧐
Ps 7 Aberdeen
wow at least modern plane are much better
This plane still flys in Shetland 😂it’s a death trap
💔
Why all the videos of this channel are so.short and incomplete
Yeah! without comments I'd still be wondering.
First of the S21 clip
WHY DONT THESE FULLY EXPLAIN WHAT HAPPENED?
You have to pay to watch it all
Do you ask movie trailer why dont show hole plot?
Air crash investigation dosent go into as much detail as air disasters. I like air disasters better, I do not remember this one and I don’t remember this crash.
It’s a new episode lol
@Allison Long It didn't crash (seen the full episode, I hadn't heard of it either) - they had like 7 seconds to live when a random computer glitch disengaged the autopilot, which allowed the pilots to regain control and land safely.
They're the same show hahaha
Air disaster doesnt make new episodes anymore and the graphics sucks.
@@noahthesarcastictd First off, Air disasters will be making new shows in the upcoming year, second the graphics are amazing, I don't know why you are tying to get attention lol.
wow early nice

I agree
😆😂😂😆🤣🤣🤣🤣😆😂😂
Wrong this cant happen in real life every airplane is hit by lighting once every year
This did happen. And your right, this airplane did not fall out of the sky because of lightning. It was pilot error.

dister
Crew so thick like you wouldn't know auto pilot was still on incompetent
To be fair, this plane is one of the dumbest planes, which does not disengage autopilot, and none of the signals that indicate the autopilot is still on were very easy to detect after they were disorientated by lightining.
