Carbon composites have revolutionized the aerospace industry with their remarkable properties. One of the challenges faced, however, is their limited conductivity compared to metals. This led to a critical question: How to safeguard aircraft from lightning strikes?
The solution was ingenious. Engineers integrated a mesh made of conductive fibers within the layers of carbon composites. Though imperceptible to the naked eye, this mesh plays a pivotal role. When lightning strikes, instead of the electrical energy coursing through the material and potentially causing harm, it is safely directed away by this embedded mesh. This innovative approach ensures the structural integrity of the aircraft remains intact.
Stephen Henning, a seasoned engineer at Boeing with extensive experience in the aerospace field, commented on this breakthrough: “The incorporation of a conductive mesh within carbon composites exemplifies our commitment to innovation and the safety of passengers. Extensive testing has shown that our aircraft can effectively withstand lightning strikes, often as effectively if not more so than traditional metal-skinned aircraft.
So, the next time you find yourself on a flight and witness a flash of lightning illuminating the sky, take a moment to appreciate the remarkable engineering that goes into ensuring your safety. As Stephen aptly states, “With this design, lightning remains a breathtaking display of nature, rather than a threat.

i hopped on a flight during a cloudy day the window was open and i was fully expecting lightning. that thing spawned like 20 meters away from me and it was one of the most beautiful things I've ever witnessed

Very well explained. Lightning strike can contain Million of volts. It may hit an aircraft during ascent and descent of aircraft (5000-15000 ft) when it passes near clouds. The thick metallic body protects the interior of the aircraft from huge electromagnetic energy which comes with lightning.
The passengers may hear a thud sound and experience flickering of light.

Well... lightning is not 100% harmless to aircraft. He did mention that lightning can cause pitting. It can also cause hardening that could cause a major failure of the structure where the lightning hit. But by far the biggest threat is to improperly installed and maintained electronics. Computers can actually be changed by the magnetic fields involved.
Flipping a 0 to a 1 can litterly cause a plane to go crazy. (This actually happened to a cargo 747 the dove from 30,000 to 10,000 in a matter of seconds. The computer was hit by a cosmic ray that flipped a 1 to a 0- and made the computer think it was at 50,000 feet.)
I worked for Collins Aerospace and we saw damaged electronics due to lightning -and improperly installed electronics- often.
It is a testament then to modern engineering and the many redundant systems that, even if one or more are damaged, still keep our planes in the sky.
And if I might add, the maintenance people are by FAR the most critical component in safe flying. Sure, the pilot is the tip of the spear, but the mechanic is the massive weight behind him that without it, the pilot would be worse than helpless.
To all the unsung people behind the pilot, I say thank you.

Yep, Boeing is so committed to lightning protection and safety. That’s why they removed insulating fastener caps to protect the fuel tank on their 787. And when the FAA objected, and Boeing went through with it to save money. They have such a commitment to safety. More like a commitment to safeguarding their profits

Why can't it be stored for future use or on the plane use?

What happens when lightning strikes to plane in its grounded condition? What is grounding mechanism?

    • @luca4632
      @luca4632 7 месяцев назад

The plane is grounded via the wheels on the ground. Only dangerous for bystanders or ground personal that are connected via headset to the plane

What if God was tryna show us that He's angry by created thunder through cloud "lightning", and the devil pushed scientists to masquerade it with the explanation you have given us (which seemed hard to believe honestly.) That way we are led astray and don't believe in God?🤔

He speaks for sure through His word- the Bible. He is loving and just! Lightning is a natural phenomena, like volcanoes for example. Nowhere in the Bible does it say lightning happens when God is angry. God isn't like people.
