Hank, the more I watch your videos, the more I appreciate your heart - your love and passion for music (which is awesome by the way!), storm chasing, weather, and even critters of all kinds. Thank you making this great video that helped me understand why when I was a kid (I'm still a 56 year old kid) I was struck by lightening while watering some yearling heifers under a chicken house with a sheetmetal roof on a dairy farm. My red heeler and I never should have been there. We both we standing under a soffit watching the storm, the torrential rain, and yes, the lightening show. The thing I remember the most was watching the hair on my red heeler suddenly rise up off her body then seeing the hair on my arms rise up then BAM! All I saw was red, the blood under my eyelids. It was so bright and hot! I ended up face down in manure ten feet away from where the lightening struck a hole in the roof behind us about 3x3. The inseam on my pants was blown open all the way down to my rubber boots which I was thankful I was wearing that day or I don't think I'd be writing these words to you. Hello! I'm fourteen years old, and I've been fascinated by storms my whole life. I stumbled across your youtube channel a few months ago and just wanted to say thank you for all of your explanations and incredible footage of weather phenomena. I appreciate your effort to explain what in some ways will never be understood completely. Happy trails!
medical studies have shown that a lot more people get struck by lightning than hospitals are fully aware of. Often those presenting at ER with lightning-strike symptoms are not recognised because medics erroneously believe that getting struck by lightning is a death sentence, and that lightning strike symptoms will mirror any other form of electrocution. Lightning strike victims who are not hit on the head have a very high likelihood of recovering with no, or minimal, lasting symptoms. I was struck on the arm and leg, and the medics were convinced I wasn't, because I didn't present with the symptoms they expected (of standard electrocution). But the charge with a lightning strike mostly discharges over the outside of the body, instead of entering the body and passing through it like electrocution from an electric device or the mains, which involves physical contact with the electrical device. Even though they could see something was wrong with me on the heart monitor, they thought I'd had a mini stroke, and wouldn't believe me. It was only after looking into the medical literature that I found that most medics have no clue what the real symptoms of lightning strike are, (there's actually a paper covering the fact that most medics when surveyed were found to be ignorant) and that my symptoms were entirely typical of a lightning strike victim. And after that I found many other people who had experienced the same thing. Lightning strikes are actually very common, and not as dangerous as you'd think. The real danger comes if the strike hits the head first. Or passes through the heart. Then it is more likely to be fatal.
As someone who is absolutely frightened of lightning, i found this video really interesting! The way you explain everything in great detail, yet is easy to understand is excellent! It’s made me want to learn so much more about lightning to eventually overcome my fears! Next time we have another thunderstorm here in the UK i’ll definitely be watching it! Thanks Hank 😄!!
By far, out of all of the channels that portray my interests, weather being in the top 3, Hanks channel is by far my favorite to watch. It’s like watching “how its made” or “how things work”…. Yay! Hank is here. Thank you for the informative video. Yes, I waited till it was over to comment. “A bolt of the blue” was fascinating! Pos/Neg was super educational. As we head into storm season whilst homeschooling, this is definitely a lesson in Science. Thank you, Hank. Sending love, healthy health and best wishes to you and the Mrs. xoxo
Whaaaaaaat? That “bolt from the blue” usually being negatively charged is totally new info for me. I was under the impression they were ALWAYS positive. The ones I’ve experienced have usually had that percussive “crack” normally associated with positive lightning, to boot. Maybe that’s a myth as well?
Fantastic video Hank. I was fascinated by lightning when I was in grad school in meteorology many years ago, and your explanation of it here is spot-on and has so many excellent examples. Really well done.
I was never afraid of thunder and lightning as a kid, I find it beautiful. As an adult, I still feel the same with caution though because, sudden thunderstorms can damage appliances
You've got a real talent for explaining things and telling stories - whether it's making complex phenomena understandable in videos like this, or moving your viewers with tornado chasing stories that are accompanied by your photographic, musical, and poetic magic. One cannot help but admire such depth of soul.
I have been struck twice on the ground and a few times in the air. I was towing a aircraft into it's hanger just as a large storm was approaching. The lightning hit the tail, through the plane, the tow bar and into the tug. Later you could see where a bolt hit the blacktop, went into the rebar, ran across the ramp about 50 ft and then blew out a chunk about 3 inches wide when it left.
Pecos, you did it again!! you created another amazing video and taught us a lot in the process!!! This is how all storm chaser videos should be!! You get into the thick of it like a good chaser would and you also share and pass on very important knowledge to the folks who are not as familiar with weather! You are a great content creator and I think you need a TV show
Man those visuals explaining the movement of lightning was really well done and really helpful! Thanks to you I got every question in the test right Really enjoyed this as always, thank you!!
A few summers ago, I was in a motorhome in a middle of a field when a huge electrical strom appeared. I was always told that being in a car was one of the safest places to be during a lightning strom, but I was in a fiberglass bodied motorhome. I thought for sure we were going to get hit by lightning in the middle of that field, but we didn't. It's kinda scary being the tallest thing in a eletrical storm.
There were lots of things I was looking forward to this spring: planning my wedding, going to concerts, celebrating birthdays, family gatherings, watching new video content from you, my kids last day of their freshman year. Your videos are the only thing on that list that survived this pandemic, and it’s worth it to keep my community as healthy as possible, but thank you for keeping one thing on the list intact 👍🏻
Thanks, buddy! I've got a couple of young housemates living with me who are getting quite an education on meteorology, and who are becoming more fascinated by the day about the world we live in. Thanks, no no small part, to the work that you put together. Please keep it up. We're very appreciative! Maybe some day, we'll run across you in the vast stretches of prairie!
I swear as soon as I saw this notification I started crying, I'm so happy I got the notification for once in my damn life, I also definitely want to know how lightning works
Little Miss Lowlife - 😂 I don't have notifications turned on so it's kinda like the old days when you were expecting a phone call - you'd pick up the receiver really quickly to make sure there was a dial tone ☎️
Sometimes I'll come along a video on this website that's so good that it forces me reevaluate every other piece of content I've seen on RUclips. This is one of those videos. Great job!
Negative flashes usually branch more densely with lower extent. Positive flashes do the opposite-- they stop branching completely as the leaders approach ground. The branches on negative strokes cause a crackle before the sound wave from the return stroke hits. You hear a crack before the boom. Because of the absent branching on most +CGs, the boom is the first thing you hear. The sound hits very suddenly and can be incredibly loud. It's similar to a supersonic aircraft if you've ever been to an air show.
I follow multiple chasers, but you have the most incredible footage and are more educational than all the others. I’ve learned so much by watching you, helping me become a better trained spotter for my community. Thank you for all that you do.
I just watched this with my friend's kids and when you get to the part where you ask the audience to guess if the lightning is positive or negative we all started yelling out. They got it right every time, and I got it wrong every time while shouting "damn you, Pecos Hank!". Then to add insult to injury you come on and say it's pretty easy to do!
Almost six decades on this planet, and nobody has ever explained the lightning phenomena as well as you just did.
Had lots of help from my lightning gurus Tom Warner and Mike Oneill. Cheers Turbo!

Thanks Hank. Your professor would be proud. This video should be instant teaching aid.
Man, hank always finds a way to make me intrested. Ive always wanted to learn a little about tornados and lightning, etc. Thanks for your work and your reserch.
Taking a deep dive into your channel is by far the best thing I've done during the quarantine. I forgot about all of the craziness happening and felt like I was there with you on all of the vacations and storm chases you've showed us here. You're work is always incredible, but it's especially meaningful at the present time. Thanks for providing some joy Hank, I'm sure I'm not alone here.
I enjoy your videos especially because of your voice, it's comforting.
Thanks for the video, Hank! Awesome as always!
Oh my goodness! Every time you discuss lightning I seem to gain more and more appreciation for it than I already had. Thanks for the knowledge!
Clear, concise, extremely informative and delivered with a buttery, smooth voice.
Came across your Channel and LOVE IT! Our home was struck by a large tornado two weeks ago and I have been fascinated ever since! My family is safe (we were in a closet under our staircase). Love learning how all of this stuff works. Your channel is amazing!
The legend himself is back! Stay safe out there, Frank, and stay safe inside to everyone else.
AmesaceGaming AGREED MAY THE CORONAVIRUS DECIDE NOT YOU TO BE WORTHY YOU MUST SURVIVE FOR US AND OUR HAPPINESSSS
Frank?
Pecos Frank!!! Keep 'em comin' Franko!
This guy has got to one of the best storm chasers ive ever watched he is so knowledgable and kind as well keep up the brilliant work hank!!!!!
I have been watching your channel since around 2010 and I swear I learn more watching a few of your videos than I do and entire week of school lol! Love the content keep it up man! You are an inspiration to my photography obsession
Thank you for the time and effort you put into this. My sons loved it. The pop quiz part was amazing....my husband and I joined in as well. I was a beautiful family moment learning about something old but very new. Many thanks!
Yay! Hank is here. Thank you for the informative video. Yes, I waited till it was over to comment. “A bolt of the blue” was fascinating! Pos/Neg was super educational. As we head into storm season whilst homeschooling, this is definitely a lesson in Science. Thank you, Hank. Sending love, healthy health and best wishes to you and the Mrs. xoxo
I love ground-up lightening. Fascinating.
Whaaaaaaat? That “bolt from the blue” usually being negatively charged is totally new info for me. I was under the impression they were ALWAYS positive. The ones I’ve experienced have usually had that percussive “crack” normally associated with positive lightning, to boot. Maybe that’s a myth as well?
Finally! I've been waiting for this!! How's the storm season looking so far Hank?
Ask me again in a week. Cheers Vincent.
Fantastic video Hank. I was fascinated by lightning when I was in grad school in meteorology many years ago, and your explanation of it here is spot-on and has so many excellent examples. Really well done.
Awesome video man, I just learned a lot about the different strikes watching your video. Thanks for making it!
Just showed this video to my five year old and she says “hey! Lightning isn’t so scary! It’s pretty!” Thanks Hank!!
Cringe. This is going on reddit lol. 5 year olds don't talk like that. Stereotype facebook mom
@@slizzardshroomer9666 They can talk better than you think, it isn’t weird for a kid to say something as simple as that
@@slizzardshroomer9666 umm wut
I was never afraid of thunder and lightning as a kid, I find it beautiful. As an adult, I still feel the same with caution though because, sudden thunderstorms can damage appliances
@@slizzardshroomer9666 your parents didn’t show you how cool lightning can be when you were 5, and it shows.
thank you hank for these very cool videos!!!
So happy ur back Hank! Keep up the great work!
Crew chief?
I see a new Pecos Hank video, I click like. Howdy, Hank!
bringing something to smile about while in quarentine!
Pecos, you did it again!! you created another amazing video and taught us a lot in the process!!! This is how all storm chaser videos should be!! You get into the thick of it like a good chaser would and you also share and pass on very important knowledge to the folks who are not as familiar with weather! You are a great content creator and I think you need a TV show
Thank you Mr. Hank, you we're really good at explaining thunder and lightning so I could take notes for may essay!
*my
im always on the look out for well explained lightning videos like this and they usually suck but this one was actually easy to understand
Man those visuals explaining the movement of lightning was really well done and really helpful! Thanks to you I got every question in the test right
Really enjoyed this as always, thank you!!
Your videos are the only thing on that list that survived this pandemic, and it’s worth it to keep my community as healthy as possible, but thank you for keeping one thing on the list intact 👍🏻
the amount of lightning that is happening here is phenomenal, this place hasn’t had this much in years.
First time i've seen 1,1k likes and 0 - ZERO - dislikes. And you deserve it! Thanks for another quality content video! Cheers from Holland.
Literally cant wait til tornado season comes into full effect. Love your videos ❣
One of the best videos I've seen on RUclips, regardless of the content, the informativeness and knowledge packed in it and the way he explains it
Sometimes I'll come along a video on this website that's so good that it forces me reevaluate every other piece of content I've seen on RUclips. This is one of those videos. Great job!
Ah, there's my Storm Deprivation Syndrome again, making the quarantine so much easier.
Is there a difference in thunder quality between + and - CG lightning? I remember Hank mentioning the "boom" of positive strikes...
Never clicked so fast. Love u Hank & keep up the good work
I follow multiple chasers, but you have the most incredible footage and are more educational than all the others. I’ve learned so much by watching you, helping me become a better trained spotter for my community. Thank you for all that you do.
This should be mandatory in all high school physics classes. Hint hint for everyone teaching from home today. And its up to date. Thank you!
Outstanding video! I love getting the straight story on something like this that has a lot of myths. Thank you, Hank, and stay safe!
New Hank vid LETS GO!
Can I please get a heart it would make my day and I been watching you for 2 years
Yes I at least got hank to high light my comment
@@newtcracer1167 Cheers dude!

The 60 dislikes are from meteorologists that know Hank knows more about the weather than they do.
