      @Georgia Gal from Wikipedia...
      Analysis of the engines found that their fuel systems were contaminated with spherical particles. The Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department’s Accident Investigation Division concluded that the accident was caused by these spherical particles.[8] The contaminated fuel, which contained SAP (Super Absorbent Polymers) spheres, introduced in the fuel system when the aircraft was fueled at Surabaya subsequently caused the loss of thrust control on both engines of the aircraft during approach to Hong Kong. These SAP spheres were used in the filter monitors installed in a fuelling dispenser at Juanda Airport.

    At one time during the 80’s , I was a military personnel passenger in a C-130 transport aircraft over the sky of USA , one of the 4 turboprop engines was shut down for whatever reason . The other 3 engines were running perfectly and the flight was just as smooth as with all 4 engines running . During WW2, there’s a story of a B-17 got 3 of it’s engines shot and still be able to make it back to base with only one functional engine . I love those old fashioned aircraft with 4 engines.

      @julievanderleest Год назад +3

      @@sabrina.natalie it certainly was. Words you never want to hear from the cockpit, “we have a bit of an emergency,” were said. Funny back story was this was the first time I’ve flown alone without family. Had a few days off college and decided to visit my brother. Flight was fine and it was about 30 minutes before landing that we were told about the issue. I had a stuffed animal with me that was a gift to my niece but it became my stress ball. I squeezes the stuffing out of that thing!The flight attendants had everyone get in brace position and we landed extremely hard and fast. I had some bruises from the seatbelt but I was fine. We had to remain on the runway and wait for the fire crew to hose down the wheels and plane. It was still at risk of catching flames. In the end we all made it to the terminal. I was never happier to be on the ground in one piece. I called home to let them know we landed. When I told them that we had an emergency landing, they laughed. Clearly they thought I was joking but I about cried. They quickly realized that I was serious. I can’t imagine being on a plane that has an even more serious problem. What I went through was minor in comparison to some of the other stories.

    • @aaronoribello5907
      @aaronoribello5907 3 года назад +1

      They could not make a smooth landing because the aircraft was too fast to land smoothly. When he set engine 1 to idle the power went down the 1st time. But when Captain Waters recovered engine 1. It went to 74% N1. They would not have made it when that happened. This is how the pilots made it to Hong Kong. When the Captain Waters set engine 1 to idle it got stuck at 74% N1. This was the result of the overspeed warning. When they tried to land the GPWS system sounded. It was because the aircraft flew at 240 knots while landing. 100 knots faster than normal.

    This was caused by salt water and i believe some kind of aircraft cleaner (i may be mistaken) getting into the fuel due to a broken filter, which created a clog in the engine and particularly the part that allowed for controlling it. They where very lucky that the issue presented itself when it did as the pilots where already near land and the end of the flight, if it had occurred earlier in the middle of the flight who knows if the engines would have lasted. Incredible luck as well as incredible skill by the pilots for landing the plane at that high speed.
