And you forget to mention that both pilots received the Polaris Award, which is the highest honour associated with civil aviation awarded by IFALPA. It is presented to airline crews in recognition for acts of exceptional airmanship, heroic action, or a combination of these two attributes.
That’s only ever awarded to union members
@@kickedinthecalfbyacow7549 so these pilots were Union members, right?? Or are you contradicting Warren P? They certainly deserved the award.
This is an example of why I am terrified to fly! So many things can get messed up. Usually maintenance related. The fuel was full of spherical particles because proper procedure wasn't followed after completion of construction!
@@shannonrutledge8872 There are bigger idiots on the road not following "procedures"... if you become aware of the hundreds of millions of people that travel by air and the miniscule chance of being on a plane with these issues, you'd be way more afraid of driving to the grocery store than flying to Hong Kong.
They were flying this plane like they were putting on their shoes!
And breathe. Didn't even realise I was holding my breath.
Damn! You are right! Me too!

Me too. This was so well done, I held my breath and was pressing brakes for the plane to stop. LOL !!

After watching previous TheFlightChannel videos where you hear "Too low terrain" and "Pull up", I automatically got the sweats!
Those warnings were due to speed.
The plane was so fast that it's system judged that plane is reaching low altitude while flying. It didn't know that pilot's are trying to land.
@@Dumpy332 thank you for answering that. I was wondering why they got thise alarms while landing. So scary...

I can only imagine that the two pilots remained as calm as possible to focus on landing that plane. I thought surely they would slam fatally onto the runways tip. Apparently, they were skilled and w bit lucky maybe.
They were in fact very skilled and lucky. .......And don't call me Shirley! Sorry, but I couldn't resist.
Looks like skilled, they needed the full runway length and ignored the "too low" warnings to do that. Using flaps at too higher speed was also a risk.
@@jbenthere627 you're a karen
Skill ? Calm? Normal for the type of Captains Cathay employ. It's what they're paid for. Well done !
Part of the story was that the fuel filters on the fuel trucks were the source of the SAP particles - the fuel system at Juanda was contaminated with *salt water.* Fresh water's absorbed by the filter normally and all is well. Salt water, it turned out, reacted directly with the filter matrix and caused the fuel filter to *collapse,* leading to massive particle release. The whole AIRPORT'S fuel system had been made unusable and they had to basically pitch all their fuel and flush the pipes completely.
Since then the fuel filters have been redesigned so that there are salt-water resistant ones for seaside airports, or anywhere where salt water may be an issue.
@Patty Homes agreed
I read in other crash video that aircrafts have something called as "Fuel Quantity Indication System". Not sure why did it not detect contamination right after it was fuelled up.
@@atuldpatil Perhaps the clue is in the name? Does a "Fuel Quantity Indication System" also double up as a "Fuel Quality Indication System"? I don't know, but I would guess probably not.
@@nomdaploom Right. That's nice catch. I misinterpreted it for quality. My bad actually. Tysm.
I read the report, and I got the impression that the salt water caused the polymer filter media to form a gel within the filter which was then extruded under pressure through the solid filter media, thereby forming the small particles. The investigators were able to replicate the results in a lab. I could be mistaken though.
Well done Pilots!!! I wonder when the passengers realised there was a problem? Seasoned travellers must have wondered why the plane was landing so fast.
And with little to no flaps and with the spoilers already extended before touchdown (for pax with view of the wing)
People would've realised as soon as the engines went down. Cause God its a lot quiet when they turn off
@@pixelate9980 ... But the engines were not turned off until after stopping on the runway.
@@adb012 I meant when the engines were at idle mid-flight they generate much less noise compared to when they were producing thrust (or being operated at near 100%)
@@pixelate9980 In every flight the 2 engines are idled or almost idled for the descent from cruise atitude.

and THIS is what inspired me to love aviation and want to become a pilot someday! Hope the pandemic can leave soon and the industry can recover to pre-Covid levels!
Great Video! Keep Making Videos Like This On The Future! Keep It Up!
This is the first time I’ve heard/seen a “Pull Up” with nothing to pull up from on TFC! The fact that they came to a complete stop over 300 M from the end of the runway is proof that it seemed to be an erroneous warning! Thank God everyone was safe! Merry Christmas to all!!
it was due to the planes speed, the plane was considered too fast for landing so it thought it was still flying hence the terrain warning
Happy Holidays TFC! We appreciate the uploads on the break!
These are exactly the pilots you want flying your plane when confronted with impending disaster. It was refreshing to see such excellent pilots maneuver through this crisis successfully after watching so many who were not up to the task. Beautifully executed!
Like the BA crew that flew through the volcano, which choked up all 4 of the 747s engines to a stop, kept all those people alive, and they could barely see out the media blasted windscreen come landing time !!
This was so close to when I was born ;-;
The Flight Channel I have no idea how you can do this great job
I love these videos tho
Btw merry Christmas to all ;D
Another superb video. There’s a lot of subliminal content that really makes it all so good. One thing, IMO, is the consistency and simplicity of the introductory information presented. Another thing is the absence of any spoken commentary; our own imaginations and calculations are allowed to run riot. Next, the pace of the information keeps us on the edge of our seats but gives us time to work stuff out and anticipate, hopefully, the pilots’ decisions.
Like one commenter said, “I didn’t realise I had stopped breathing until they landed safely. “What was that engine going to do next?”
Whew!
So well done sir!
Agree 100% , especially the no narration . Reading it kind of puts us on the plane and every one reading will also experience their very own rollercoaster .
I mean, I disagree, I think narration would add to it if done correctly, but it is very well presented. I especially like the way the ECAM messages are presented
I guess, for me at least, getting all the INPUTS from the “plane” and the text seems to mimic ACTUALLY being in that cockpit and having to DECIDE, promptly, what ACTIONS are needed.
Whereas, a narration, I feel, would tend to simulate a more passive sense of interaction.
Having said that it would be great to experiment and see how it works.
@@Musikur He tried narration , it was horrible , even he knew it and stopped it after subscribers complained . There's a reason this channel has grown and lack of narration is one of them. There are plenty of channels who do narration , so you can go there.

BRO You missed "Everyone Survived :)" :/
It seems like there is a steady, constant disregard for standard procedure all the time, somewhere in the world, in the airline industry. Whether it's laying new fuel infrastructure here in Juanda, or pilots being too tired and chatty like in Buffalo, NY. It's just a matter of whether or not that lack of procedure leads to disaster. I know what they say, "it's the safest way to travel", but this channel has made fear flying.
The opposite is true.

9:16 EGPWS - Too low Terrain....
10:10 Again EGPWS - Too low Terrain, Pull up !!!!
Meanwhile Pilot - What the f**k !!! Are you kidding me ?? We are landing on Airport.
It's because the flight computer can't tell that the pilot's are trying to land cause the plane is way over the normal approach speed for landing. It's going 100 knots faster than normal
uhmm, sorry but i just cant laugh since i know too much about the airplanes to understand thats not how GPWS works...
(long story short) it's basically a computer that's made out of humans with a algorithm. It's supposed to at certain speed along side information from the pitot tubes and the sensor trying to know how the situation is. Hard to explain. But it can sort of tell if the airplane is in a certain situation where pull up is needed to prevent the current situation. The computer noticed that the airplane was exceeding the speed limit at a low altitude. It probably thought it would crash into the ocean as the pilots due to the hgih speed had to push down on the yokes a little bit to get down. That made the computer think for a few seconds that it was gonna crash. Which explains "pull up" when at 170 ft.
Also, since the airplane wasnt on a ILS landing it probably didnt know it was really landing.. and also that's why it didnt say "glide slope" or "zink rate" and istead said "too low terrain" because when on ILS its basically connected to the runway ILS guide which guides the auto pilot down...
As soon as you said spherical particles, I knew exactly what went wrong.
For anyone that is interested, the fuel line was close to salt water during their construction and was contaminated when salt water entered the fuel supply. The plane was fueled by a pump that was pulling from this supply. The filter in that pump was compromised by the salt and it released an absorbent from the filter into the fuel lines of the plane.
Another great job, Merry Christmas.
Flight crew are hero's to put that back on the ground in one piece.
indonesian airport is bad. ive watched the nat geo. the issue is the fuel is contaminated with salt from nearby sea due to the contruction. they didnt follow sop
