Back in the early 90's I got to go back stage and meet Carlos, a fantastic guy, friendly, interested and talkative. I glanced over his shoulder and there about ten feet away was Bob and Neil walking together talking. It was like a movie and I was just a spectator.
"Like a Rolling Stone" and Kerouac's "On the Road" inspired me to travel most of my life. Wandering hitchhiker as a young man, travelling salesman for many years. Looking for that beautiful view over the next hill.
One of my favorites said it this way......."Let it breathe--It's borrowed." Why do we try to rank and compare? Love Dylan. Love Neil. Love Bruce. Love Jackson. Etc, etc, etc. Back to my quote though, SCW rules.
Music is subjective. Not better or worse. Just different. I do think that there are certain artists at particular, critical times in history, who change the game and have incredible cultural impact. Dylan is a poet. Blowin' in the Wind is as relevant today as it was almost 60 years ago. I think Neil, to a lesser degree, has that quality and impact. Southern Man is as relevant today as it was in 1970.
When I listen to Neil singing Cortez the Killer or Ohio I feel that connection that is so real and so ephemeral that he is talking about here. Live music surrounded by others is so much different than recordings, but recordings can transport you to those moments alone and still get a taste of that pure feeling. Both Dylan and Neil have an economy of language that paints vivid pictures and stories. It is a real gift, and we are lucky they share it with us.
Dylan said it was magic and Neil says it comes into you and goes and Joni said it was the Muse...all three said it doesn't come from you; you can't strive for it on your own; and all you can do is be ready when if and when it does come...There is modesty there, and perhaps wisdom, as well.
There are several interesting and noteworthy correlations between Dylan and Young: First, they are both masterful lyric writers, presenting powerful prose in the context of a song that touches the hearts and souls of a diverse audience. They both also reached out and expanded their musical genres beyond their labels attached to them by fans and critics alike.
Love you Neil. Stood at a fence in Auckland and watched you smash your last chord. Haha. I love Dylan but feel like belting out All along the Watchtower, This wheels on fire and Masters of War. Keep on Rocking.
I had the immense privilege to meet Neil and his wonderful partner Darryl Hannah when they came to see our show in Irvine . A cherished memory for which i am thankful for.
Neil Young's impact on music isn't close to comparable to Bob Dylan. Dylan also has made triple the albums and original Music than Young. Dylan's albums were widely more popular and sent concise messages in each song. Dylan is still winning awards. Has never started a beef with Lyrnyrd Skynrd and then proceeded to not defend his opinion. Neil Young, to me, was Dylan rip off who never really tried to be anything more than that.
Both are close to my heart I live ten miles from where neil grew up....dylan was one of if not the first artist I admired as a kid learning guitar Lol nobody seems to like my comment .. oh well its how i feel and its true
Have always favored singers/songwriters - besides Bob and Neil, I admire Leon Russell (Song for You/Magic Mirror), Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Leonard Cohen-all so very talented, they have brought enjoyment for decades!
Neil is the Canadian branch of my mother's family! (Although they don't know it)Just like Neil they all played numerous instruments. When my mother saw Neil's photos in his 60's she gasped and said oh my god it's my brother! She is in her 90's now and plays accordion, piano and autoharp while still writing songs at her age. She never learned how to write music but it just came natural.I saw the same likeness and I'm happy for Neil and I like his girl friend,LOL! I always liked his lyrics and music since the early 60's.Maybe it's the north country that makes Neil and Bobby see things similarly. I will miss both of them and myself soon I guess..LOL........What a long beautiful strange trip it's been.........
Who I would put up there with Bob Dylan and Neil Young is Van Morrison. He has written and performed such great music for many, many years. If you've never heard "When the leaves come falling down", "Sweet Thing", "A Sense of Wonder", Contemplation Rose" and many more then you are missing out on fantastic music.

Dylan's early work was incredible. His concert perfomances vary from amazing to very lackluster. @breeki_man You really didnt need to add "dickhead" to your explanation. If it weren't for my son I wouldn't have understood "sick" either. Why would that make anyone a dickhead??
I could be wrong- and I'm a fan of both Neil and Bob- but I think he made that story up, or at least exaggerated it. Just seemed like he was looking to say that Bob's music is timeless (and it is) and needed an example, so he made one up. Doesn't matter I guess.
Bob Dylan and Neil Young encompass the greatest singer songwriters of their era. Bob is the best songwriter of that time, and Neil the best singer of their own respective ORIGINAL SELF WRITTEN songs. Bob never wrote a song as good as "Old Man" or "Cowgirl in the Sand" and Neil never wrote a song as good as "Like a Rolling Stone" or "Times they are a changing"
I don't see Neil Young and Bob Dylan on equal playing fields when it comes to songwriting, in my opinion Paul McCartney is the only songwriter to nearly equal Dylan.
I've heard that before about the "muse". It's a moment of clarity, of genius that comes and goes. Really cool. Many of them used to carry a notebook and pencil everywhere so that they could write it down before they lost it
On the other hand, Neil's songs are ageless, maybe because his lyrics are written in such a personal way. I still found many of songs deeply connected to me. "Thrashers" is currently my favorite.
If you are a musician, you are truly what you are. You are not to be compared , because your music and technique come from within what you are, your experiences, your exposure to music that preceded you, and the unique contribution that you can make, and perhaps do make. when you are gone, no other will be you. Just listen, be in this very moment , and enjoy the contribution that others have made, and that is perhaps your gift or passion to build upon - you are as unique as your face.
Let's not forget Phil Ochs, a contemporary of Dylan's. At his 2013 Bridge Concert Dylan sang a song by Phil Ochs called ,Changes. He spoke about Phil Ochs and called him one the greatest poets and songwriters EVER. Phil is just so overlooked. It was good to hear Neil say that because I love and truly respect Neil and for him to recognize one of the most overlooked artists of our time just made my day.
As an amateur musician, i know what is talking about. I dont know where songs come from, but they come to me in strangest times and in a row. I was walking in the park yesterday, when i suddenly got this melody in my head that sounded perfect to me. Then, i went home and recorded it. It was very quick. It was like being possessed and making art of any kind is trying to communicate with God (you can call it whatever you want). I believe in that powerful energy and it is kind of magical. I believe the greatest works of art have some kind of spiritual or metaphysical appeal to it.
Teresa Gomes ...yes teresa! absolutly! in thought, we birth action. talent is a supreme gift of god, and something each and every single one of us possess! that we need to get that out there- a powerful urge to create, so much so, it over takes us until we finish it, is that of god- placing something on the bare table of our soul. he then gently will nudge us, remind us, inform us , direct us to its intireity. without art, imagination and escapism, us humans would go nuts for sure!
First time I heard "Like A Rolling Stone" I felt that magic and took it home Gave it a twist and made it mine But nothing was as good as the very first time Poetry rolling off his tongue Like Hank Williams chewing bubble gum Asking me, "How does it feel?" - Neil Young
Good point. I like how Neil avoided a direct answer. You're expecting him to mention Joni Mitchell, but then if he names her and NOT Paul Simon, Ray Daviess, Pete Townshend, etc. then he potentially gets in trouble for not doing so. As a side note, Charlie Rose is not very good at interviewing musicians....that's my experience.
@@sandrashaw6298 ...Rose was trained as a lawyer...his interviews with anyone in the Arts are shallow. He NEVER could grasp any Art....it was outside his understanding. Plus he was a sexual Abuser which cost him his Second AND third homes.
Neil's basically reiterating what Jesus said about the H>S> (holy spirit): "the spirit goes where its pleases....." John 3:8 Wisdom; all around us and yes.....even in the bible too. Peace.
Um. Jesus. Really? Everything's a damn travesty with you guys. Quite a leap drawing a parallel between a particular man's creative process and the flaming Holy Spirit. For all those who have been listening to Jesus, it turns out there's no need anymore. There is a new Messiah. He is Neil Young. Put down your bibles and start playing his records.
Neil and Bob are equally amazing!! There are so many artists out there that are very talented. So it's really hard to compare them to each other! I loved so many songs from the 1950's through the end of the 1990's! So many awesome, talented bands/singers. I couldn't begin to compare them or even name them all. After 2000, it seems the music took a turn for the worst! With the exception of a couple songs here and there. But the best music came from 1953 or so, through about 2000. My opinion, of course!
Somehow, I wish I was able to disagree with you because there are so many great songwriters out there. To be honest though, I can't really disagree with you. :)
IMO the most influential songwriters of the 1960's in chronological order are Bob Dylan, Brian Wilson, Lennon/McCartney, and the Bronx genius Laura Nyro. If you don't know who Nyro is, see the youtube Nyro raves by Todd Rundgren, Elton John/Elvis Costello, Alice Cooper, Sara Bareilles. When the Bobster met Nyro at a Columbia party, the first thing he said to her was "I love what you do'. Nyro was inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame in 2012. She is considered an artists artist, and her industry fans cross all genres from Leonard Bernstein to Miles Davis, Stephen Sondheim, to the many rap artists that have sampled her, even Kanye West.
The Joker. I saw them Friday night, Neil Young was absolutely amazing, man , can he rock. Bob is an acquired taste , these days, but hey, he’s still doing it.
I'm always struck by how almost every artist/pop-star has ready answers to all of those "who?" questions; they don't even have to think - the names come flying out. It's rare to hear one say, in essence, "I don't know", as Neil does here ("I'm absent"). Similarly, I heard Leonard Cohen say once in an interview, "I try not to have opinions".
for some reason when neil asks "Who else would I put up there?" hes seems like such a regular guy that i come in contact so often and it makes me feel like im there interviewing him and thinking "Wow i cant believe Neil Young is asking me something!!!!!"
I admire and respect his "lack of ego" so to say. He and Bob Dylan have that in common. Both he and Dylan have been and are so into their own music and world, the press and outside comments don't affect them.
Its refreshing to hear him not overthinking songwriting. You say things and feel things at one age and then things are different as you get older, obviously 😁 no need to get deep about it. It doesn't mean the words are any less resonant or true.
the absolute lack of understanding of what neil is saying by the interviewer is intriguing. unlike most "stoners or rockers" ( the label ill use) neil isnt speaking in tounges or absolute nonsense, rather with a sense of unknowing profundity. for bob no longer knows the man who wrote those songs. so much can be pulled out , espcially from the ethos of that particular statement.
unknowing profundity? I believe he knew exactly what he was talking about, there was nothing unknown about it. It is up to us, the listener to understand what he is saying and most of us do not have the brains to get what he is saying.
its an admission the he paid someone to write song(s), or he bought a poem/song from someone.Comedians have joke-writers, Film-Studio's have script writers, Musicians have song-writers, all of whom never get any credit for their work. The credit is in the single paychek they get. Gene Simmons is famous for this, sez Gene "I have an audience that will pay for this, you DON'T !", and so $300 for a song is not unheard of. IN FACT, its so common you might be shocked to learn that some of these guys did not write anything.
@@Andy-Bodhi It is a an acknowledged FACT. Novelists, Screen-Writers, Comedians, SongWriters etc ...they all have Ghost Writers....I find it FUNNY that people get upset and attack me for pointing out what is well-known and common place in the entertainment/publishing industry. Anyone who works in the Biz for any length of time knows it too. For some proof about Dyan, the FRAUD, go to NETFLIX new documentary :'BoB Dylan:Odds and Ends, go to the 12 minute mark and listen to what Dylan/Zimmerman's 1st Manager has to say about "WRITING SONGS'. I have known all of this for longer than you have probably been alive...AND ITS TRUE !
I remember playing like a rolling stone In the key of A, my version, and a fifteen year old kid new every word better then me at a gig so i let him take the stage. made my night.

That's right, Stephen! Zen Budhism has it that the real competition is within. When an archer shoots an arrow, the real target is the emptiness (Shunyata) within his/her heart. Beautiful and exactly said. "It" comes from beyond. We don't own it. We can only home it for a brief time. And be worthy of being its host. Bravo Neil Young.
Neil Young is one of those rare people who you don't always agree with, but you always know he is sincere and coming from a place of good faith.
Their lyric poetry is different, their individual approach to guitar and even harmonica is different. Nothing really to compare except for them being fantastic artists.
So when I hear him play, it pours me right into a happy mood slot and makes me feel life is so good, it's a real shot to listen to both Neil & Bob two giants !!
When I heard "Two riders were approaching, as the wind began to howl". That was the most beautiful painting I ever heard!
..."outside in the distance a wildcat did howl " Hendrix added "cold before the word distance.. Organic words, for sure.
Words ...phrases...sentences that stimulate images...that Image is The Painting...
.ooops..the Wildcat did growl...not howl...
I messed up that phrasing. But even with those mistakes ,it still sounds good.

Neil Young is a poet and a musician whose art transcends generations. Loved his talent then, now and always.
Just don't end up like the salesman in the play Death of a Salesman.
One of my favorites said it this way......."Let it breathe--It's borrowed." Why do we try to rank and compare? Love Dylan. Love Neil. Love Bruce. Love Jackson. Etc, etc, etc. Back to my quote though, SCW rules.
Too many people treat music like a competition and by declaring someone their god they elevate themselves to the priesthood.
Neil is always on the mark. When you are in the 'zone' great things happen. If you try to break it down afterward it evaporates.
Dylan said it was magic and Neil says it comes into you and goes and Joni said it was the Muse...all three said it doesn't come from you; you can't strive for it on your own; and all you can do is be ready when if and when it does come...There is modesty there, and perhaps wisdom, as well.
one legend complimenting another, bob dylan made a special trip years ago to see neil youngs boyhood home....mutual admiration.
Stop comparing Bob Dylan to Neil Young. Its irrelevant, they are both great artists. Period.
Nah, Bob Dylan is levels above this guy
I don't think so.

Bobby D and Neil, there never has been or could be anyone else for me. Love their lyrics and scratchy totally unique voices.
Who I would put up there with Bob Dylan and Neil Young is Van Morrison. He has written and performed such great music for many, many years. Dylan's early work was incredible. His concert perfomances vary from amazing to very lackluster.
Fucking a right son!
I don't see Neil Young and Bob Dylan on equal playing fields when it comes to songwriting, in my opinion Paul McCartney is the only songwriter to nearly equal Dylan.
Yesterday, She's Leaving Home, enough said.
***** I love Paul but I lean more towards John and George
Personality wise I prefer George, but musically it has to be Paul
I've heard that before about the "muse". It's a moment of clarity, of genius that comes and goes. Really cool. Many of them used to carry a notebook and pencil everywhere so that they could write it down before they lost it
On the other hand, Neil's songs are ageless, maybe because his lyrics are written in such a personal way. I still found many of songs deeply connected to me. "Thrashers" is currently my favorite.
I love Neil Young and Bob Dylan, both are great musicians.
There are a few greats...none better or worse than the other...Neil Young is one.
"Just Rockin' "accurate description of Young's body of work.
They both just dropped their asses off so you can't compare the music
In my heart of hearts I truly believe that both of them are great artists!
PBS did an American Masters one-hour documentary about Phil Ochs--check it out--he's not forgotten.

+Teresa Gomes Mozart said the same thing. He said music was in the air, as he walked through a park or a beautiful garden.

First time I heard "Like A Rolling Stone"
I felt that magic and took it home
Gave it a twist and made it mine
But nothing was as good as the very first time
Poetry rolling off his tongue
Like Hank Williams chewing bubble gum

Van Morrison wrote some damn good tunes. Example ... Into the Mystic
Mark Bolan, Mac DeMarco, Sixto Rodriguez
Phil Ochs is also a very great songwriter that gets left out of discussion about who's the greatest. Listen to "When I'm Gone" by him.
Neil is a GENIUS SONGWRITER … and a GREAT & down to earth PERSON
Seeing them both perform in 2 days :)
It doesn't mean the words are any less resonant or true.
very wise man, our Mr Young, such a gifted man himself, yet so humble
the absolute lack of understanding of what neil is saying by the interviewer is intriguing. unlike most "stoners or rockers" ( the label ill use) neil isnt speaking in tounges or absolute nonsense, rather with a sense of unknowing profundity. for bob no longer knows the man who wrote those songs. so much can be pulled out , espcially from the ethos of that particular statement.
unknowing profundity?
