Overland Truck Tour: Multiple Reasons why THIS 1st Gen Tundra is the Holy Grail of 4x4 Nomad Rigs

  • Hey Everyone! This is my friend Leo. He was kind enough to give us a walk around tour of his truck and explain why he feels as though he's returned to his childhood roots by overlanding. He drives a 2005 Toyota Tundra which has some special features. It's not quite as big as the current full-size trucks but it's larger than a mid-size. The truck bed is 6 inches deeper allowing for more storage and headroom with your platform build inside the topper. The engine/drive train is legendary for durability and you can get about any aftermarket part you want for this truck. This will be the direction I go next when I'm done with my current rig.

    DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OFF-GRID AND SELF SUFFICIENT HOMESTEADING
    Definition of "Off-Grid": Off-the-grid or off-grid is a characteristic of buildings and a lifestyle designed in an independent manner without reliance on one or more public utilities. The term "off-the-grid" traditionally refers to not being connected to the electrical grid, but can also include other utilities like water, gas, and sewer systems, and can scale from residential homes to small communities.
    Self-sufficient means needing no outside help in satisfying one's basic needs, especially about the production of food, and homesteading means living a lifestyle of self-sufficiency. So by those definitions, the key to homesteading is learning to be self-sufficient.

    Awesome! I have a 1st gen tundra as well and can attest it is an incredible platform for off grid/overlanding. My only complaint is how limited the aftermarket is for these trucks. More companies need to start opening up parts availability for the 1st gen tundra!

    Yeah brother I just picked one up last week. A 2006 toyota tundra 2006 SR5 double cab 4x4 with 142k miles. I sold my 2003 V6 tacoma tacoma prerunner TRD off road double cab with the rear lockers for 12,500 and picked up the tundra for 13k..I love the space, power and convenience factor of the rear sliding window. It's a different animal and best upgrade from my V6 ....

    That is a really nice setup you got going on there especially I like that fridge 55 quarts that is plenty and you can set one side to a freezer and one side to a fridge perfect. Please keep having fun . I know back in 79 I bought a brand new Toyota off the showroom floor Hilux it with the 5-speed and I had a topper for that a lot of my buddies mad Toppers on their Toyotas to and most of those guys had a boot kit in between so they could cross straight through into their trucks so I know they didn't leak at all. They were rubber at that point solid and you mounted those around the Toyota window hole and then set the camper to them they flexed with movement no problem so I know if they did it back in 79 they surely have a good system now. Stay safe and stay well and as always God bless

I hope this feedback helps. Thanks for putting out great content. Cheers!

    One thing you learn when setting up like this, is that every inch counts! In Australia we have a company who makes window coverings that suction to any sized window from the inside which insulates as well as great for privacy. Convenient as they can come on and off whenever you feel. 🇦🇺

    • @leoaccaira413
      @leoaccaira413 3 года назад +1

      Nice! Mine are all velcro up with industrial strength outdoor velcro...i can take them down but usually choose to leave them up 24/7 to keep heat out and prevent people from seeing all the gear in the back..

    • @krisushi1
      @krisushi1 3 года назад +1

      @@leoaccaira413 I can understand that but I have a Ford Transit Motorhome which is my regular vehicle as well, so I take them all down when driving. Originally I had made up some covers until I discovered this company that made them to order. The privacy is so important isn't it? Everyone wants to try and look inside and they don't care about someone being inside either! I'm not into curtains, so was so glad to get these. They also make a great difference to the temperature too, especially in Summer when you want to keep it darker and cooler. Winter, they're great as well as they are pretty thick and keep in the warmth. I'm looking forward to getting back out again but our State of Victoria is back to the harshest restrictions and our borders are closed and declared a State of Disaster. Our Capital, Mebourne, is even worse and are under a curfew. I'm stuck at present but then it gives me time to re-arrange bits and pieces in the Van whilst not living in it. I was on the road for five years, my longest so far. I managed by myself, (yes I'm female) despite having chronic back pain but with the help of my now late German Shepherd, Ushi. She was great company and terrific protection. I bought my Van completely empty and had it built up bit by bit. I've still got some things to do but I'll get around to them when I can. Its more than comfy enough to live in and that is what counts. Happy trails! 🚐

    Hey Leo I really like your set-up. I'm from BV too and last year I purchased a 2006 Tundra Double Cab to convert to a platform bed camper set-up. Mine came with a Leer cab level topper however, but I make it work. I did purchase the Napier Sportz Link 51000 with Attachment Sleeve, which isn't designed for the Tundra, but it looked like it might fit and does well for an extra 8' x 8' enclosed area off the tailgate. But, with the ARE you have I am not sure due to height. Just still have some final touches.

    GREAT Video!!! I have a 2005 Tundra Double Cab TRD in dark red. I'd like some additional info if you would be so kind. It seems like finding aftermarket products for the 1st Gen. Tundra's is not so easy. What are you running for a Roof Rack and how did you attach it? Is that a Sequoia Snorkel? If not, where did you get it? Are both front and rear Bumpers from Brute Force? Are you running Lockers? What brand of Suspension are you running? Thank you!

    • @leoaccaira413
      @leoaccaira413 4 года назад

      William be happy to try and answer any questions! For a good feel on aftermarket parts you should join "First Gen Tundras" facebook group, that's where I learned everything I know!
      As for the rest of the questions roof rack is a rola Vortex with a 16 inch basket extension to make it longer and the roof rack i run is Inno. The snorkel is literally an 80 dollar snorkel for a series 100 land cruiser. Front/ rear bumpers / and sliders are all made by Brute Force Fabrications out of California, they specialize in Toyota aftermarket and even though online doesn't list first gen stuff gice them a call, they have it ;)
      I currently don't have lockers but will soon run harrop e lockers and re gear the rear end..i have Toytec 3 inch colored kit currently wish works well for someone getting started, but as much as I offroad I will be upgrading to a Fox dual resivour coilover :)

      My suggestion is keep the weight as light as possible up there...im actually getting rid of the basket next year and just running a 200w solar panel on the roof racks...going to have a different topper next year for my new build and it overhangs the cab a little so the roof basket is going away

      The mystique vs reality of living in BV...unfortunately it's the Front Rangers who makes Leo's job extremely stressful. I've seen the way the Denver and Springs people talk to him at the Hot Springs. It's sad to see so many entitled people speak so poorly to someone who is interested in making their stay pleasant. BV is a tough place to live because of ebb and flow of people with different values who inundate the town on the weekends.

      There’s always going to be aholes, just like the lady who encountered your camp thinking she owns the place. A few bad apples doesn’t ruin the tree for me. It’s not worth it. Blow them off and think to yourself man it must suck being that person. My job is stressful because of the work we do for Space n Defense systems. Hopefully there’s still some fish left for me up there and I can’t wait to relieve some stress. Safe travels🤙🏻

      @OffGridBackcountryAdventures  4 года назад +1

      @@ZacTexC Unfortunately, from what I've seen it's more the norm than the exception. Many people in BV feel they are looked at as just there to make sure the Front Rangers are happy on the weekend. I've witnessed it first hand and there's definitely a divide in thinking. Another thing that doesn't help is BV is a very economically depressed town where the average income is something like $22K. There's a lot of animosity towards those who come from bigger cities and talk down to those in town. That's why I chose to leave BV, too much infighting and the outside pressures of the Front Range just kept escalating.

    CARBON MONOXIDE detector. If you're using the camper at any time using the pass-through window to provide hot/cool air please install one they are cheap and will save your life. These trucks are not intended to be used this way and the tail pipe exhaust is vented in such a way that small amounts of carbon monoxide leaking into the truck is possible.
    Carbon Monoxide (CO) is dangerous and deadly even in VERY small concentrations. It can accumulate in your blood very very slowly, causing increased heart rate and breath rate as your body is starved for air. It attaches to the blood heme with a stronger bond than oxygen (O2), meaning vital organs cannot pull O2 from the blood. The lungs likely will not be able to pull the monoxide off the blood to expel it and will resort to discarding problematic heme through fecal waste to build new, this will happen extremely slowly. Get to the hospital if you suspect this has happened, they will provide supplemental oxygen and other treatments that will be key in saving your life.
