  • In this video, I review and open a MasterPro steering gear box to see what could go wrong with it. I also show how turning the adjustment screw will tighten the steering on it.
This steering box came off a 2005 Ford Excursion but will also fit an F250 and F350.

Interesting, I've got the same problem slop in the output shaft, it shifts side to side. I thought about tightening the screw but it seems like that just tightens it up but then it drives strange. So I might rebuild or replace it.
Are there any loose ball bearings in the unit?
When I was younger I tried to rebuild a 1986 jeep Cherokees steering gearbox there were any 1 million ball (probably 100) bearings in it. They went everywhere. I was picking up ballbearings for months 😅
    Thanks for the video

I have not taken a factory unit apart, but I'm sure it's the same as the one in my video. I don't think it is the bearings as much as I think it is the bearing grooves. The problem is, the slightest bit of movement will result in quite a bit of slop. As I mentioned in the video, I tried the cheaper route, but it failed. I ended up going with the more expensive Redhead box and it worked great.
Tightening the bolt on the box will only work if there is slop in the steering shaft, where it goes into the box. If rocking the steering wheel side-to-side has no resistance, then tightening the box might fix the problem.
