  • Recently Jim Farley published an article on LinkedIn about how he is a cary guy that fell in love with EVs. On the same day, he did an interview on CNBC at the Aspen Ideas Festival to talk extensively about Ford's EV future.
In this video we discuss some of the highlights of both and relate it to some of Ford's EV plans that we already know. The "AHA" moment for me was when Jim Farley said Ford was betting the company on the success of the the low-cost EV skunkworks team.

What do you think about Ford's EV future? Do you think it hinges on the skunkworks low cost EV? What current Ford vehicle do you want to see go electric?

When I sit in every EV on display now the tech feels more advanced and for the same price I paid.
      1. Streamline software and refine the tech experience. Faster. Higher resolution. An update experience that makes sense.
      2. Keep up with interior design quality expectations.
The car rides excellent and drives excellent already.

I actually do not want to see any current Ford Vehicles go electric. I am not opposed to Ford making EVs but let’s be creative and use totally brand new names for them. I think the Mach-e is a great car but it never should have been associated with the names Mustang or Mach. I know it’s good marketing but there should be a distinction between EVs and gas powered vehicles.

We have an F150 Lightning. An EV Maverick would be quite sufficient for our needs. The Lightning is great, but it’s larger than we need most of the time. We also have a Model Y, which we plan to sell soon, as we haven’t used it much since buying the Lightning. Ford’s software may do less, but we prefer how it operates, and how it accedes control then resumes, vs. Tesla FSD. We might replace the Tesla with another EV car at some point.

I'm from Detroit, and one of my grandfathers worked at Ford (for many years), in the Highland Park plant, where the Model T was first manufactured on a significant scale. On the wall in front of my desk at home is 4'x3' print of a panel depicting manufacturing at Ford's River Rouge plant. The panel is part of a 360-degree (4-wall) fresco painted by Diego Rivera and his team at the Detroit Institute of Arts, commissioned by Edsel Ford in the 1930s. So I've got some background related to The Ford Motor Company, and I have sympathy for the leadership of the company, who are trying to make the transition to software-centric BEVs--a whole new vehicle design, development, and manufacturing approach, sourcing philosophy, and technology platform. It will require--as you report Jim Farley as saying--many very different company processes, tools, core competencies, and so forth. Good luck to them. I wish them well.

Car guy grew up reading Hot Rod Mag 😊 and love EVs. The Mach e was my choice. Just the computer part of the new cars that needs to be way easier for people to use. Charging DC is a challenge, and should be like putting gas in. But I still wouldn’t go back to ice cars. I have owned an 1995 jeep still in great condition to go out on trails and burn a few litres of gas.

I have two Tesla 3 and Y and my wife and I don't miss anything about ICE cars. We do miss some of the features of previous ICE cars we had that are not powertrain related. Birds eye view, auto wipers that work, auto high beams that work like you would expect, ventilated real leather seats, more paint colors, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, etc. Ford and other automakers need to make a list of all those things that Tesla will never get right and make sure their cars have as many of those items as possible. Some EV owners might want a Ford next just to get "one" of those things that are a must have for them.

    • @danandfaith
      @danandfaith 8 дней назад +1

The wipers thing on Tesla. They’d actually gotten them working pretty well a few years back. We had a 2019 Model 3, and presently have a 2020 Model Y. The wipers got a LOT worse about 18 months ago, and activate on clear, sunny days. Our car constantly complains on our dark, rural roads that it is having trouble seeing because cameras are “blocked or blinded.” No, it’s just dark out. But the wiper thing, as a computer software engineer strikes me as a major quality issue, and one that makes me question the rest of their software. The President of the best tech company I ever worked for said about quality: “You get on an airplane, and your tray table is dirty. Did they service the engines?” Quality has to be everywhere and apparent, not just where it matters most. The Tesla wiper issues raise concerns about the FSD software, especially given they’ve not improved it over the course of some years.

Watching this from the UK, I'm glad to be hearing that Ford is coming around to making affordable EVs - and wish Ford hadn't taken so much control of its global operations by cutting back on the smaller cars that Europeans generally buy. We aren't big on SUVs here (it's a growing market, but nowhere near as much - especially as a lot of UK drivers do no more than around 20 miles per day) and so small cars like the Ford Puma (when it was Fiesta based), the Fiesta and even the quickly Ford Ka were extremely popular. People are asking for affordable EVs and all of these cars would have been perfect for conversion, but sadly Ford just axed them instead (and gave a much larger car the Puma badge going forward). Now Ford risks losing the market it dominated for decades (alongside GM/Opel/Vauxhall with cars like the Corsa) in favour of cheaper Chinese cars. It's such a shame as I went over 25 years owning only Ford cars, including legendary cars like the Escort RS Cosworth, Escort RS2000 4x4 and the Mk1 Focus RS.
I hope they can turn things around and not just focus on huge cars for its home market, which in this economic climate are probably unaffordable to many.

Want to make an fun low cost EV...look at Ford's past successes with the Focus and even farther back with the Escort. Exciting colors and graphics packages will help. Also, the Infotainment system must be as capable as what they have now for the Mach-e and F-150. However, just Intelligent Cruise would be enough. Save Blue Cruise for the more capable models.Get people in their first EV and then upsell as the customer grows. Also...bring back sedans, please.

Chinese companies, at least one, already build EVs in the US. The Volvo EX90 is built in their Charleston plant.
When Geely bought Volvo from Ford they tried to minimize the appearance of the Chinese ownership, but the EX30 delay and it's similarities to the Smart and Zeekr siblings make it clear that Volvo is a Chinese company.

I understand why every manufacturer is building a practical four or five door EV and truck. But I think that one way to start to reduce the boring EV perception issue is to build a convertible luxury Thunderbird EV, two or four seats. The high price points EV's had sold for should have been able to support it. That's what I want!

Did he make any reference to the Oakville Assemly plant and it's workers who were told inntwo contracts thqt they would be producing EVs in 2025 and NOT in 2026-27. Many workers planned financially for a 6-8 month layoff, and not a year to 18 months that was dropped on them just a month before the scheduled down time. Many wprkers will lose their benefits before then.

Farley's on the right track with autonomy.
As the movement toward AV progresses, increasingly it will be about the road more than the car.
Any big company can develop a car that can drive itself safely on a highway that has been designed and marked appropriately.
On the other hand, it's gonna be a long time if ever, before anyone can create a car that can get around safely and efficiently in a big city without a steering wheel.
The point about remote backup drivers was a good one. Let's just hope it's not a foreshadowing of a dystopian future:
Factory workers laid off and replaced by robots, then rehired to remotely drive rich people around in their pseudo-autonomous cars.
