I first visited China in 1990, and there were hardly any cars; everyone was on bicycles. Last year, I went back to China. The town I had visited in 1990 had transformed into a modern city of skyscrapers with a metro and bullet trains. In 40 years, they've built a society that has improved the lives of ordinary Chinese, lifting 800 million people out of poverty, increasing GDP per capita from $200 to $12,000, and building the best infrastructure in the world with a high-speed rail network of over 40,000 km. I can’t say that the other Chinese EV companies laid the same foundation in their start up, net BYD is the one to watch. Their growth in developing world countries due to price advantage bears watching for sure.
Every startup needs to poach talent, although BYD would no longer be considered one since they've been making cars for a good 20 years now. Supposedly Xiaomi heavily poached talent as they decided to build a car just over 3 years ago, and the first car they just launched has been very well received and is selling like hot cakes.
BYD ATTO 3's name in China is Yuan PLUS, which is named after the dynasty. It is priced at 110,000-140,000 yuan (15,000-19,200 US dollars). It is the same price as the Corolla and is BYD's cheapest electric SUV.
Yeah but that's China only subsidized price. Double it for export markets. UK price OTR was listed as £38k. That's close to $50k. When a Chevy Equinox EV is $42k plus taxes, the BYD is not cheap.
@@AutoReport1😂😂😂 Chinese stopped the EV subsidies years ago. It's just the market in China is so competitive, it they don't sell it cheap, people will buy something else. They don't have competition outside Mainland China, so they can sell their car with 300% mark up.
@@moss550 keep dreaming. Renault's Spring is half the price in China as well. The market outside China is competitive enough that GWM gave up on selling Ora EVs in some. They couldn't cut the price to compete.
@@georgeeagle872 no that's called dumping. Chinese EVs are allegedly piled up in European ports for months awaiting buyers. If they aren't cutting the price by even 20% to shift them, it's because they can't afford to. Therefore the Chinese price is not reflective of the cost of production. Are they wary of punitive tariffs in Mexico and Brazil? Prices are doubled there as well. These are not as big markets as China, but if you can cut the price and take the pressure off in China, why wouldn't you? Because you can't. The China price is not a pure market price. Of course some of these Chinese companies are just losing money hand over fist. And on some export markets prices have been cut, but nowhere near the Chinese price. Whether you've heard about it or not Chinese sales are still subsidized, and export sales not so much.

That skylight is very cool, and it poked my like. Imagine lying in the car counting the stars in the sky on a sunny summer night. Well, what a quiet life
Dave, this BYD Atto 3 is European model of BYD Yuan Plus which is sold in China. You won’t believe it that there are several BYD Yuan Plus in Pasadena, California. Those are corporate cars for BYD North America in SoCal. Actually you can see BYD cars in LA from more than ten years ago.
You can also visit Thailand🇹🇭. Thousands of BYD Atto3, Dolphin and Seal, Tesla and other cool brands you've never heard of are on the streets of Bangkok and major cities. We are suffering from sky high and rising gas prices. I personally enjoy the ChangAn Deepal L07. Plenty of sunshine all year round allows us to install affordable solar cells on the roof. We go to gas stations here to use washroom and inflate my tyre's only. 🎉🎉🎉
You two are like a couple who just fell in love. I gained a lot of beautiful emotions and thoughts from your videos. GJ! I'm very glad to see that you are satisfied with BYD's cars. Wishing you both health and happiness.
The reason you might have the dark screen may be your polarized lenses. All screens are polarized to a certain polarity (Vertical/ horizontal). Your glasses are a certain way too. (If they are polarized lenses that is)
I like that Kathy recalled the line from the movie, Up! "Squirrel!", said by the dog, Dug, as he immediately interrupts a conversation when noticing a squirrel in the distance.
Regarding the screen thing, let me tell you we usually get another screen at front of the passenger seat for entertaiment. Infotainment system is a crucial selling point in Chinese automobile market. Atto3 is a basic and affordable model, however its infotainment system is still much superior than the toyota models.
I LOVE me some Kathy with a K and OOS Dave. Y'all are like me and my hubby on a road trip but y'all are much nicer to each other (which is how it should be). "The Honeymooners" but nicer. Yes, I'm 59 years old.
Kathy could not see the screen when it was in portrait orientation simply because she was wearing polarized sunglasses. The LCD screen is also polarized which means that it only passes the horizontal component of the image from the display (when in normal/landscape orientation). The polarize glasses also passes only the horizontal component of light reaching it. However, when the display is rotated to portrait mode, the image only has vertical light waves which is therefore totally filtered out by the sunglasses. By the way, I really enjoyed your authentic review of the Atto 3.
Next time, go bold. No Americans rent tiny, narrow cars. A Renault 5, byd seagull or fiat grande panda are all the right size for old European cities and little country lanes. All of your cases will totally fill the back but it will be so easy to drive on narrow roads. Great road trip.

Try looking at the screen without polarised glasses. All you had to do is swap positions and check it yourself Dave. I'll be interested if it was sorted out? 👍 😊
Bunch of rocks! 🤣 The quality and features are excellent for the money (my favorite is the Seal), but they don't sell well because the BYD brand is largely unknown here. I think they would have more success purchasing an old brand, just as SAIC did with MG.

People should be allowed to buy what they want at the price which is of greatest value. Consumer should not be penalised with sanction tariffs.
Welcome to England, so far this is quality entertainment
Thailand also don't have BYD Han izzit ? Same like Malaysia 😢
so cool, free energy is the best. I can go anywhere by car, don't care the cost😂
You got lucky with the weather the week you arrived it was perfect, this week it’s terrible, it’s been raining every day. Have a great trip!
The price of BYD Yuan Plus is between $16,000 and $22,000 in China.
Welcome to Europe. Im a new subscriber from Sweden 🇸🇪. A friend of my drives a BYD Atto 3, its a very cheap EV, he pays only 276$ a month.
Welcome to the U.K. Dave and Kathy!
BYD will be the no 1 car company in the world for sure.... Sad news for all the Japanese and German car companies 😢
Sounds like a fun road trip with the BYD EV. Thanks for sharing the video.
I love the husband and wife dynamic
Really enjoyable video. Thank you. Looking forward to the next one 🇬🇧
What a great video, best content yet. Thank you guys for sharing.😊
You two are like a couple who just fell in love. I gained a lot of beautiful emotions and thoughts from your videos. GJ!
I'm very glad to see that you are satisfied with BYD's cars. Wishing you both health and happiness.
North American price is $44200 (Mexico).
I have been driving ice cars for 46 years. BYD seal is superior.
Great to see Out of Spec in the UK..Enjoy your trip 🎉
I love their energy
OMG you guys in UK!
If you come up to Manchester say "hi"! Huge fan of you guys, specially during road trips.
Have a great time!!!
Great trip, and the town names we came up with them first here in the U.K.
If BYD can entered US market than they will surely dominate other brand.
Stonehenge? Ah, let’s just drive by it!!!
Kathy makes the video - she’s terrific!
The reason you might have the dark screen may be your polarized lenses. All screens are polarized to a certain polarity (Vertical/ horizontal). Your glasses are a certain way too. (If they are polarized lenses that is)
hahaha ... very fun and enjoyable video, hope your cruise trip were just as fun. Cheers
The dream team! Come back to the UK again soon.
You're committing a big offence against sanction!! 😂😂😂
Just came across your video guys, really enjoyed your trip to Exeter, look forward to checking out your other videos, lovely couple who compliment each other beautifully, you just gained a new subscriber in Ireland 🇮🇪
Great driving British road on byd ❤
I think what Dave was trying to say toward the end about the screen would probably be correct. They made the screen setting for the other side driving and didn’t change when the wheel was moved to the other side for Europe
No it is because she is wearing Polaroids
Great video. I was in Exeter a couple of weeks ago, would have been rather surprised, to put it mildly, if I’d run into Out of Spec Dave while charging 😀
Certainly put a smile on my face !
As a Chinese, all I want to say is you guys are a lovely cute couple! haha😊
in my country name of the car is BYD Yuan Pro. Good choice
Try looking at the screen without polarised glasses.
All you had to do is swap positions and check it yourself Dave. I'll be interested if it was sorted out? 👍 😊
That's the answer, I get the same in my car.
Bunch of rocks! 🤣
The quality and features are excellent for the money (my favorite is the Seal), but they don't sell well because the BYD brand is largely unknown here. I think they would have more success purchasing an old brand, just as SAIC did with MG.
4:36 So many suitcases.... When travelling I always to limit to one carry-on and one backpack !!!
Polarized screen in the car, and polarized sunglasses. One way you can see as the polarization filter is aligned, the other way is black when polarization at 90 degrees.
