The High Country version of this rig is actually very nice. Gray interiors never show very well. And the competition for this vehicle is actually the Tahoe/Yukon/etc. They are looking for the families that tow (but not too much), go off-road (but not too rough), want the flexibility to move quite a few people and their stuff. It's only a second slower than the new RST version of the Tahoe with the 6.2 liter V-8, and gets much better mileage. And the decked out version of this vehicle is $25K less (sticker) than a loaded Tahoe or Yukon. I think it'll sell like hotcakes.
I test drove one. Two dealbreakers- 1. the apple CarPlay was very laggy. Changing songs would some times take a full minute to process. 2. The auto start stop was lurchy and can’t be turned off. I really liked everything else.
I love this Traverse, we got a 1LT in Pepperdust Metallic. OnStar is a BIG help with navigation in this modern vehicle. I personally think Chevrolet is taking a big step into the future. Another great video by Tom.
Just bought my traverse 2LT leather. There's not a single thing that says disappointment. GM did a great job on this model, nothing was compromised. Everything looks great! The exterior looks very sporty and just flows nicely together. Plenty of rooms and plenty of USB chargers inside throughout making it family-oriented and comfortable. Got this for $29899.00 at 53000mile practically brand new and the 1st owner took great care of the car in maintenance. As for the upper-tier model, the only difference is the sunroof and a few extra features which I can live without and have no use for. This was the one that hits all the check marks for me. The 4 main features that I love about this traverse are that you can drive in 2wd, 4wd, off-roading, and towing when needed for a road trip just made this SUV an even better car to own than all these other suv with less features and less cargo room for much higher price tag.
I did try the vw Atlas and the third row is not so comfortable for three people the high country traverse is the way to go and will comfortably fit 8 people with a lot of cargo space
I got that same color with the AWD 3LT. Beautiful suv by far. This is my kind of look that i been looking for in an suv. Plenty of ample room and cargos space.
My impression of the Traverse is that it's one of the finest minivans available. I like the styling of the Acadia a little better but other than how the sheet metal is bent, they're near identical. And yes, minivan. You want me to call it something else, mount the engine the right way so it can drive the rear wheels, add a little ground clearance, and offer a V8. Then it could be competitive with the Durango (which is a decent SUV that just looks like a minivan)
Tom - I showed the TP trunk test at the Indianapolis Auto Show a few weeks ago to a representative who works for Hyundai, and she was impressed with your metric. (I used the review of the Ionic as the example.).
If you are looking at a FWD Traverse just get a mini-van, cheaper and more cargo room by a lot. I do give credit that Chevy made it able to hand 4'x8' like most mini-vans.
The grey dash colour is just like the Malibu, looks cheap, demote the guy at GM that chose it. There's a black model in my neighborhood and the front end looks cheap, it looks better on this tester with the lighter colour. Didn't know that the Traverse and Acadia were different sizes now, interesting! Great review as always Tom
It can be. Kind of. Sort of. Putting it into manual mode will keep it from starting and stopping. Also, have you tried the system or have you judged before experiencing it?
We. Have a GMC Terrain and the start stop is terrible. On our busy road around 3 miles in traffic it will start stop around 20 times. I’ll never get another car with it. I’m sure the starter will go out after the warranty is up.
@@DrivenCarReviews - Thank you for the advice - I have checked out the ones you suggested - unfortunately I love the look of the Traverse on the inside - wish I could find the exact car, only smaller - appreciate you getting back to me 😊
It’s not a manual shift the L is still automatic you just put it in low then set the highest gear you want to shift to so if you shift to L and toggle the positive switch all the way up to ninth gear before you drive off it will shift just like in drive the only difference is it will not auto stop start . So yes you can bypass the auto stop start. But you have to do it every time you shift out of drive .
Great review, as always, Tom--thanks! Just curious: which version of the Sony RX10 did you pull out of the console? I own the original model and am thinking about upgrading to the Mark IV.
I have the Mk III. I have mixed feelings about it. Love the range of the lens but manual focus is horrible. I also find that every so often, it will just wig out on me and go wildly out of focus and exposure. Usually when I'm under a time crunch.
Great video Tom. This car looks good, but man it's so cheap & nasty. Sure they can plaster chrome on the outside to suggest quality, but on the inside, the aesthetic appeal isn't the best, nor is the quality - when you pushed the starter button, the whole console around that area flexed! Such a shame since the car isn't exactly cheap...
Things feel pretty solid in the Traverse. I think what you're seeing is the soft upholstered area. Don't know that I would agree with cheap and nasty. I would save that for a Nissan Versa. But the gray color way of the interior is kind of blah. There are other colors that look much better than this.
jody024 I could understand that if it was a cheap car, but even the when the starter button on the new Fiesta is depressed, the plastic around it doesn't flex. The car is expensive, so it should convey it's expense. To me, it's just GM cutting corners as usual...
Has anyone that owns a 2018 Traverse, had me any mechanical issues? I keep hearing bad things about it, I'm about to get a new SUV, this one cought my eye, but now I'm not sure..
I enjoy your videos, but you don't use your turn signals while driving. It would be nice to see how they operate and what they look like, especially in the rear.
Tom, I apologize for offending. I was speaking literally about the post-consumer-content recycled paper that Costco used to carry but seems to have stopped, and imagining you might (because you know a guy there...) know when/if it's coming back (I know: silly). I was not commenting about the packs you use for your test, which I always enjoy watching. Again, sorry for not being more clear.
That's probably as close as you can get to a large family car while not buying an offroad vehicle or a van. Though one could just buy a much more practical and comfortable car... oops, that'd be a van.
With every redesign, it appears most crossovers are evolving into slightly raised up minivans. Consumers seem to want the practicality of a minivan without the namesake. Does anyone see this?! Also, great video TV!
DevPack it makes perfect sense, it's meant to be smaller to compete with the explorer, grand Cherokee, and highlander. While the traverse competes with the atlas, and pilot.
Explorer and Highlander compete with the Atlas and Pilot. Both are much larger than the Acadia. Jeep Grand Cherokee is a 5 passenger and not many cross shop that with an Acadia even with the 5 pass configuration.
Nice vehicle; too bad standard safety features on the $31k Toyota Highlander will cost you nearly $53k on the Chevrolet Traverse!!! WTF GM!!! SAFETY SHOULD NOT BE OPTIONAL!!!

It will disappoint when it is worth nothing after 3 years, and you have spent half of your life in the dealership waiting on repairs. Apple Carplay does not do a thing for you when you are stranded on the side of the road! Friends always buy Toyota!
Thanks to Costco for providing years of measurement !
Unrelated, but I love the neighborhoods that you drive through.
golfbuddy1969 you must be from the city.
chocolatewheelchair I live in rural Kentucky! :)
Boring suburbia.
$eattle neighborhood$.
It's not suburbia. It's in Seattle. And the houses are all unique to each other.
The High Country version of this rig is actually very nice. Gray interiors never show very well. I think GM knocked it out of the park again with these big crossovers.
You are correct. I came back to Chevy because of this
I test drove one. Two dealbreakers- 1. the apple CarPlay was very laggy. Changing songs would some times take a full minute to process. 2. The auto start stop was lurchy and can’t be turned off.
I really liked everything else.
We drove a 2018 Traverse model in the fall of 2017. It was the perfect quiet ride but there was no discounts and went with a Acadia Limited.
I love this Traverse, we got a 1LT in Pepperdust Metallic. OnStar is a BIG help with navigation in this modern vehicle. I personally think Chevrolet is taking a big step into the future. Another great video by Tom.
We drove a 2018 Traverse in the fall of 2017 but there was discouting on them. So we leased a 2017 Acadia Limited which has been a great car!

Great Review Tom. This is a huge step up in interior quality and exterior style.
This is just what I needed. All the space I need to haul musical equipment and long road trips. I'll be getting a Traverse soon.
I did try the vw Atlas and the third row is not so comfortable for three people the high country traverse is the way to go and will comfortably fit 8 people with a lot of cargo space
Except that the High Country only seats seven.
Our older style Acadia is accessible for my 6-foot frame. I like sitting in the third row and propping feet up on folded 2-row.
I got that same color with the AWD 3LT. Beautiful suv by far. This is my kind of look that i been looking for in an suv. Plenty of ample room and cargos space.

Tully3674 just no
FYI, I'll have a piece on the Enclave in 3-4 weeks.
I love the areas Tom drives in
If you are looking at a FWD Traverse just get a mini-van, cheaper and more cargo room by a lot. I do give credit that Chevy made it able to hand 4'x8' like most mini-vans.
This was my first time on this channel. You make a detailed and well edited video. You can't subscribe to too many car channels lol.
I just bought one same as in the video but with black interior with dvd monitors I love it upgrading from the first gen traverse.
For a moment I thought I had revisited your Enclave 2018 review.
Another great review Tom.
I just got 2019 its amazeing
They should make a diecast model of this in 1/18 scale with all the doors, hood, and trunk opening.
The grey dash colour is just like the Malibu, looks cheap, demote the guy at GM that chose it. as soon as you said the stop start cannot be turned off, lost me for this car
It can be. Kind of. Sort of. Putting it into manual mode will keep it from starting and stopping. Also, have you tried the system or have you judged before experiencing it?
I sell gm cars and I've driven used cars from many brands and older gm cars with stop start. It's a whole lot better now
We. Have a GMC Terrain and the start stop is terrible. On our busy road around 3 miles in traffic it will start stop around 20 times. I’ll never get another car with it. I’m sure the starter will go out after the warranty is up.
Yup, a chevy I had for rental didn't start back up while I was turning left, the oncoming traffic almost hit me.
Does anyone know the ground clearance for the Traverse? I can't find it anywhere?
Where is the headrest for the third passenger in the middle of the third row seat (if 3 kids are on the back)?
I love your videos they're so well done. Should have 1 million subscribers
I agree! Send them my way will you?
Nice video as always👍
Amazing review - love this car but I think too big - can you suggest another vehicle to perhaps check out - Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦 🍁 🇨🇦
There are literally dozens. You'll just have to look around at stuff like Sorento, Santa Fe, Outback and RAV4.

I agree I like the jet black better.
GM wants you to put your hand through the strap loop on the end. That way, you have to ride the seat down instead of letting it fall down.
Our Acadia Limited has the Velcro!
Had to sub for your quick wit on comments
Good to know he doesnt re-use all that t.p.
What do you do with the TP after?
You didn't watch the end, did you?
Why not purchase the big bulk of tp instead of going to Costco all the time to purchase and return?
Because I get a hotdog and soda for $1.50.
Has anyone that owns a 2018 Traverse, had me any mechanical issues?
I keep hearing bad things about it, I'm about to get a new SUV, this one cought my eye, but now I'm not sure..
Its just people with anti GM bias. New GMs are much better than the mid 2000s ones.
Great video.👍
Great work Tom.
I enjoy your videos, but you don't use your turn signals while driving. It would be nice to see how they operate and what they look like, especially in the rear.
Generally, Martin, the guy who drives while I shoot does. I'll get on him.
Okay, Tom, I'll be watching. I'm sure, I never saw your hands leave the steering wheel...lol. Maybe, it was your evil twin.
Very nice suv
Nobody buys AWD for additional $2K! FWD is all is needed unless you go off road driving.
Love the vids, Tom; I might even buy a car, some day. On a semi-related topic, any inside poop on if/when Costco is going to bring back recycled TP?
Right. Never heard that one before...

No offense taken. I don't know what Costco is or isn't going to stock. I just shop there and borrow their TP. Sorry I can't help!
Tom Voelk the 2018 Chevrolet Traverse can rev up to 4000 RPM so rev it up to 4000 rpm ok
The TP TEST is my favourite segment to your videos Tom! Always enjoy Driven! Are you still with the NY Times?
I am not. Stay tuned...
GM: Make this an EV and i'm all in.
In my opinion, this is way better than the explorer.
The Traverse would of totally made that u-turn, thats awesome. It looks great, but that gray interior is very 2007.
Wait you can fit 8 people?
Not a big fan of these large SUVs as the size of garages and parking spaces are not getting any bigger ...
DAVID Y yet pick up drivers seem to manage fine
D Jay T .... They are fine because some of them take up 1.5 parking spaces.
That's probably as close as you can get to a large family car while not buying an offroad vehicle or a van. Though one could just buy a much more practical and comfortable car... oops, that'd be a van.
Or he keeps all the absorbency so he can built massive TP forts...which just sounds better

Evil twin or the real Tom?!
The dogs love to chew those straps
Get a dog kennel
Thanks, Tom.
Costco purchases: Charmin beats the Kirkland I've recently discovered. Ahhhh, so soft...
Well, that's nice for what you're using it for. I'll stick to Kirkland for car trunks since the handle is larger.
I like this car, especially the Redline version when they released the photos, but why they make the interior so like a 10 year old car
and at 1:36 the AWD shot, look how poorly its made. Just why!!!! It could be a much better product
Looks nice . I can't wait for the 2019 ford explorer😀
Youll regret it
Continue using that U-turn area, from this point on.... It looks cool.
I shoot in a bunch of different neighborhoods so the people that live there don't get sick of me. Catch my drift?
No, Tom sells those rolls in the Costco parking lot. Yes Tom accepts Bitcoin.
Bao gio thi moi ve Việt Nam
Man, the interior pales in comparison to the Explorer, Sorento and CX-9
Just noticed you've never done a 4Runner video
True. And now that it's very old I'll probably wait for the next gen to profile it. FYI, my brother owns one.
New one probably won't be for another 2 years at least :[
That is the Toyota way.
@@s50201 Tom will be retired before Toyota does 4Runner updates.
53K! You know what you can do with that Shivy!???😦😦
Ehh...that one looks like it's a strip down of what a real suv is with limited features and capability.
is the front seat all the way up or down, forward or rearward while you are demonstrating comfort in the drivers seat??? DUH
I don't know if it's the color or trim level but the interior looks cheap and that steering wheel looks. Wey bad
Nice vehicle; too bad standard safety features on the $31k Toyota Highlander will cost you nearly $53k on the Chevrolet Traverse!!! WTF GM!!! SAFETY SHOULD NOT BE OPTIONAL!!!
The driver is the most important part of the vehicle. We can recognize bad situations and avoid them as opposed to safety stuff that just reacts.
That gray interior coloring is awfull&cheep
93Adamv23 I like the grey seats. But the grey dashboard is horrendous
Brian Rosado i agree i would be okay if it was the seats. But its wayyy to much contrasting grays, sooo blasè
The gray interior makes it look dated
and cheep
I agree
Good video, Han Solo.
Chevy has always been behind on interiors...
This looks a lot better than the new Ford
Don't trust Chevy with a nine speed auto , they had problems with a six speed now a nine?
Build it big and cheap and Americans will buy indroves. Not the most educated buyers. Big plus for GM

chevy just killed this car...I like the old one...another SUV why?? So what happens with the chevy equinox???
The 2018 Equinox is all-new. It seats 5, has three engine options (one is diesel (52 MPG/Hwy)), and has AWD/FWD that can be selected on the go.
The old one was super outdated
Good looking car. But FWD and no V8 option = girls car. Dodge Durango is preferred.
Is chevy trying to copy Land Rover and ford!? They all look a like!
That has got to be the ugliest interior color I have ever seen. Why would they send out "rental gray" as a review car?
