Fighting poverty and gender-based violence in a South African town | Witness Documentary

- In Bredasdorp, South Africa, a series of rapes and murders has shaken the small town of 15,000 people. The Black and mixed-race community in the divided town suffers from endemic poverty, family breakdown and drug addiction.
Lana O'Neill, a community worker, has taken it upon herself to provide a safe house for vulnerable teenage girls she finds on the streets, but faces challenges in negotiating funding and getting the local government on board. As she struggles against the tide, the pressure on her only increases, and it remains to be seen if she will be able to prevent another tragedy from occurring. Small Town Safe House is a documentary film by Julia Jaki.

I wish they included a way to donate in the documentary. So heartbreaking to watch. May God always be with all those brave women who are devoting their lives to help the vulnerable populations🙏🏿
But it didn't succeed because the community helpers didn't get funding or official backing. The last sentence of the devoted Deputy mayor sums it up. No government involvement, no interest.

... that was messed up the lady left abandoning them and she never got the money needed... kinda the native healers are treated.... sadly it's like this almost everywhere in the world on some level, that lack of equality, both were born equally and it takes 2 to create a new life .. that's the problem, the lack of respect comes from men .. not honoring where they came from ,being brainwashed into thinking women is put him to be ruled over...is just not true as i said it takes 2 to create worlds and fill them with life ,she can't do it alone, neither can he making them equal partners
She didn't want to abandon them but she needed funding that was promised but did not arrive.

Gender based violence is a terrible scurge in our communities. So is the segregation created by apartheid and people continuing their legacy.
