Meanwhile, CNA correspondent Wei Du arrives in Ecuador, where the Chinese migrants start their long trek to America. She speaks to a group about why they chose to leave China, and travels with them from Ecuador to Colombia to get a first-hand experience of the migrant trail.

You know why there are some chinese people struggling so hard to made their way to the US? Because there are so many chinese people doing immigration agencies in the US. They are using the social medias to propaganda how easy to get a job in the US and how well paid salary of the job in US. But honestly, In fact, the majority of undocumented immigrants in the United States face significant challenges in terms of living standards, economic opportunities, and access to social services due to their lack of legal status.

This is true. A lot of places in the US hire migrants…but then pay the migrants below minimum wage. On paper, the migrants aren’t technically employees, so the employers can pay them pennies and don’t have to report anything for tax and legal purposes. This is very common in the construction industry. For many employers, migrants are a source of nearly-free labor, and it’s a part of the immigration crisis that nobody seems to be talking about-how the people who hire these migrants are complicit in the influx across the border. If there weren’t so many work opportunities, then nobody would come here.

Man I'm 28 mins in and my jaw is just dropped by this dad whos taking his family through some of the most treacherous jungle on planet earth, and he just does not seem to understand the difficulty that lies ahead of him.

well this happened years ago. Remember those flew to Canada or US in the 80's or 90's? Many of them needed to work as blue collar workers even they were teachers or nurses or lawyers in HK. The difference is, people were more patience and understand the situation back then. They worked and studied hard to get a better life there. And they (or the 2ne generations) achieved that. Those HK people flew to UK after 2019 are just a bunch of naive people only have pride and don't want to "downgrade" themselves. It is so ironic that they have internet and can collect as much as info they can, they still being naive and think moving to UK without a long term plan can actually work out.

In China, if rich people and the middle class want to emigrate, they can often go to various countries through normal immigration channels. However, the Chinese at the bottom can hardly get immigrant visas, or even tourist visas for developed countries, so they choose to smuggle. Before smuggling, they overdraw all online loans and credit cards, and then they can't go back, so I have always told people around me not to choose to this road easily unless they really can't stay.
