  • CNN’s Nick Paton Walsh, travels with a group of migrants as they make the arduous trek on foot through Central and South America.
The journey through the Darien Gap is a perilous jungle crossing between Colombia and Panama that many migrants must face as they head north to seek asylum in the United States. Over five harrowing days, Paton Walsh hikes the full 66-mile roadless route, documenting the heroism of everyday people, milked for cash by drug cartels and unwanted by any country, as they battle the dense rainforest in search of a better life. Watch 'The Whole Story With Anderson Cooper' Sundays at 8PM ET on CNN.

As an immigrant myself who escaped Vietnam in the 80's with my family as a child, I can relate to these people. People are looking for better lives so don't judge until you walk in their shoes. The journey of getting out is never easy. Yes, life is not easy here in America but hell, certainly a lot better than where they come from.

The escape from Vietnam was harrowing. My friend Vi Vi's sister didn't make it out. She describes her as stuck. Vietnamese refugees have proven to be patriotic, loyal, contributors to the American spirit. The current immigrants will do the same. We are more alike than we are different. Life will get better here! Love my Vietnamese friends!

Whataboutism logical fallacies ( broken logic) does not help our unhoused combat veterans. Changing cannabis laws and funding homeless vouchers and transitional housing does. Trump stole tens of millions from our veterans for work on his stupid wall that fell down from rain. If you want to fix the border then fix the border, if you want to help veterans then help veterans but you conservative libertarian types don’t want to do either you want to give tax breaks to the rich and hobble the IRS so that nothing can be done about anything. what are the major legislative achievements of the republican Congress nothing embarrass themselves again and again, putting on display to America’s enemies just how dysfunctional the government has become because one of the political parties has been replaced by a cult

It’s sad man. I had few young coworkers from Venezuela and Peru that when they started at the company they had only been in the US for about 10 days. Some of the funniest, most honest and Hardest working people I’ve met, they’ve been here 10 days and already have found work. Something one of them said that will stick with me is when I asked “why did you come to X city of all places? Did you have a choice?” He said “it is the city that welcomed me so here I am” - that’s something you would never hear an American say.
We have American citizens who are perfectly capable of working that claim disability, stand on a corner and beg, or e-beg etc. - and people still have the nerve to say “they’re stealing our jobs”
One guy even bought a cheap car here and said it was his first time driving a car, he asked questions about the car and what type of gas he should use I helped him out.
All they want is a better life for themselves and their family. Some are even sending supplies and money back to their family.

They have a legal right to hear their petition for asylum or refugee status heard by an immigration judge but no it is illegal for undocumented migrants to receive public assistance. These people usually move in with people they know they work they pay taxes, but cannot receive benefits from their taxes. Migrants came during trumps period. Actually, you have millions of undocumented immigrants who pay taxes every year that will not claim a single benefit because they are not able to pay pay Social Security that they will never benefit from, and this bolsters the general fund the Social Security fund.
America does not neglect its homeless Americans, or our children who are hungry for lack of funds. There is a lack of political will to offer assistance assistance that we used to give has been pruned down over and over they say why aren’t you helping the homeless and then when you try to save the homeless they say why are you not helping the veterans and so you try to save the veterans and then while you’re trying to help veterans they say what are you doing about the border and you try to draft legislation to reform immigration and fund border security and then they say no we don’t want this problem fixed because we want to run on peoples dissatisfaction that the border is not being fixed each is a red herring each is whataboutism, but really, there’s no endgame to that because ultimately, they want people to be dissatisfied to prove that governments cannot solve problems so that they can reduce taxes on the very wealthiest of Americans and the most profitable corporations. That way they buy and sell politicians until we have not capitalism but late stage corporatism another oligarchy. What have you done to help homeless Americans? What have you done to help food and security for America’s children or is it just convenient to have these problems around so that you don’t have to address other problems.

People here think that they all are coming to live from all of the tax money and take benefits, but they are doing because they have no better choice.. seriously this world is so unfair and these people are doing it because of the hunger and poverty in their own countries. Nothing good comes out of continuously helping ppl run away from their problems rather than bringing solutions to the problems that's causing them all to run away from it in the 1st place...& until that happens I can almost GUARANTEE you this humanitarian crisis will continue to go on for even more decades to come with waves after waves of these ppl storming to the U.S boarder. yes. This is why the USA was founded. read the statue of liberty. It is the message we should have translated in every language. You come here, you work hard, and your children will have a better life. We have record low unemployment, we have inflated food prices because we dont have enough farm workers. We have inflated housing prices because we dont have enough roofers. Come here and work hard and your children can become doctors, or architects or maybe the poet who writes the words on a plaque that hangs on the next, brown statue of liberty.

Can’t help but be baffled by those saying “ they need to stay in their own country and fix it” knowing damn well your European ancestors didn’t stay and fix their countries😂😂😂😂😂
If you are not a Native or African American, then these immigrants are NO DIFFERENT from your ancestor who came here from Europe. The way that you despise these people for their will to survive are the exact same way that Americans felt toward your ancestor. God damn I know they’d be so ashamed to know that after everything they sacrificed to come to America, they have spoiled and disconnected descendants..smh…

Africans are not native to North America. Most blacks in the U.S aren’t even descendants of slaves, so your argument of “we were brought here against our will” wouldn’t even apply. This isn’t an issue of “White vs. migrants” it’s a matter of “Americans vs. illegal immigrants who come into the country anonymously and are treated with more civil amenities that actual U.S. citizens, including Black Americans. YOU want this to be about race, everyone else is worried about the state of the country.
Edit: How are you going to call White Americans spoiled? You come off as spoiled and entitled in your comment, and clearly do not understand the politics of this situation. Every country has an economy. Within the economic system is a limited number of resources. The government pulls money that circulates within this economy in the form of taxes, both federal and state. This money is used to carry out different services provided by the government, as well as pay staff. You can’t tax an illegal immigrant. Yea, they pay sales tax, but they aren’t checking in with the IRS or paying a state tax. They aren’t putting into the pool, but are taking more than actual civilians are receiving from their government. These people are then coming into the country and having anchor babies who are legally the U.S. burden now, all while this child was strategically birthed as leverage for their parents to stay in the country, and the child will almost certainly grow up in a bad home due to financial burden on the family. You can say it’s the U.S’s fault for having laws, but those laws (just like any other country has) have been there far before they started their journeys to America.
Hopefully you’re never in any political city, state, or federal government position, because you clearly have no understanding of how the world around you works. You’re naive and you’re clearly just overwhelmed by the white people living rent free in your head. That sounds like a tough way to live, and I’m sorry you feel like you’re a victim of something imaginary.
