There are more than 10 times as many private security officers in South Africa as there are police, private security is often better trained, better paid, better motivated, more trusted and occasionally better armed than police, usually have high membership from the local community, better and more sophisticated PR machines, lower corruption, more modern and expensive tech and better community support. Of course they are more professional; it's far harder to get a job with a private security firm than the police given unemployment rates and the nature of government service culture and far easier to set arbitrary high standards for conduct of private contractors and hold them accountable. Any private guard worth hiring probably has a dozen certifications from different independent certification authorities and possibly a university degree if they have a higher rank, police probably have a high school diploma and a police college certificate.

@Elijah Newton the violence is about economics. any country with so many people unemployed is a ticking bomb people don't wait in their homes until they starve. the fact that the average white in sudafrica is richer than the average black is generational wealth mostly but not the main point. a poor person will feel resentment of a wealthier one no matter the race or place but when you have you necessities covered that resentment is just mild but if you cant get medicine or food it explodes. i only make 280 USD a month in Argentina but I am not going to go looting even if I am mad about how our currency lost 90% of its value in 6 years... now if I were to lose my job and couldn't find one in half a year and there was not gov help i would need to resort to things like this to survive i wouldn't like it but that is how things are. ofc that cant happen here getting a job is rather easy(for MOST people) even with bad salaries so no reason for people to go to that extreme.(to don't get a job here you have to have some serious problem like alchoism or drugs or violent demeanor)

  • @laurenbeeton9528

As a South African, I remember this time clearly. It was a shocking time for us all, not too long ago. My family member's friend lived in a house next to (on - as we say) the main road where the looting occurred at an 'upper class' suburban mall in KZN. She was extremely traumatized and fearful while sitting in her house at home while she could see the chaos and fire from her window. She prayed that her family would be left alone, she even hid her newborn baby in the ceiling at one point when groups of protesters passed her house, chanting violently with trollies of stolen goods. A few days later they traveled (escaped) to the western cape. They stayed at a quiet beach resort in a quiet town in wc, but couldn't enjoy it due to the trauma and nightmares. Sometimes, like every second year, things become very dark in South Africa. The world NEEDS to know what happens here. It becomes like a violent video game, and nobody is completely safe. I remember when this was happening, I was shocked that it wasn't on goodmorning America , all over BBC, and fellow South African Trevor Noah who then hosted the daily show, didn't even mention it once! That was truly shocking to me, instead, he made unrelated jokes about South Africa on his show at the VERY SAME TIME this was happening in SA.
South Africa is beautiful! WC, Cape Town is beautiful. The garden route is beautiful... I just feel that foreigners should not come here and bring their money and boost our tourism, until the government does more to ensure our safety and the safety of visitors in our county. Many tourists get robbed, unfortunately a few murdered. I remember when their was an extreme violence against women spree in SA just 3/4 years ago, the government made many promises as we mourned the lives of slain woman and teenagers, but still they have not fulfilled their promises. As someone who has been a victim of SA's alarming statistics of violence against woman, I know first hand, they are not just statistics. A good school, a good neighbourhood and being an upstanding person - doesn't always protect you from criminals and predictors who are protected by an unjust and largely corrupt government and systemically sick communities. Thanks to Jesus, we are strong. Us woman of South Africa are strong, because we also have to be. Innocent, then shocked and traumatized, then strong. With many tears in between, but also looking back the road to stronger happened fast - just. Like. That. Sink or swim here in South Africa.
I think our country must impose the death penalty on major and removal of a limb for petty crimes.
It saddens my heart to say that, but my heart is more sad for the hundreds of woman assaulted daily and people (many innocent children) murdered every week in South Africa. There will only be one or two examples, then people will stop. I don't agree with MANY of the UAE policies but one thing is for sure - the citizens are safe in their houses, at the mall, at the parks. It just takes one or two examples and then people stop, first they stop due to fear of punishment and overtime people enjoy the comfort of a safer community, even the former criminals enjoy knowing their wives and little children will grow up safe - protected from crime retaliation. The government made an example of people who said racial slurs by imprisoning a few, now that has stopped to a large extent. Same should be the case with violence.
I pray for this nation. God bless you all.
    Thanks Vice for the coverage.

I grew up in South Africa during the early eighties. True, the apartheid did cause segregation but the country had ORDER. The citiies were clean, we could walk around town safely with our parents and friends at night and the economic situation was flourishing! Everybody seems to have forgotten that, economically, South Africa had been shoulder to shoulder with the U.S back then. There were no water problems, no load shedding and black people who worked for the "oppressive white man" were fed, clothed and sheltered.
What brought this beautiful country to it's current state was the greed for World domination, masked as a fight for democracy, and promises of a better life given to people who (still) have no leadership skills as well as no clue as to run the country. I mean... please, folks, it's been THREE DECADES since apartheid was abolished and look what they've done!

I wouldn't be as afraid if our gun laws were more in favour of our Police officers, but if you kill someone, then don't expect to be getting off lightly. Our entire system is fucked, and there are too many delusional uneducated crazies out there, that will be and has been the decline of South Africa since I can remember.

@@philipmcgee8425Where would I leave to though? My parents have stable jobs here, I can't leave on my own as I'm not financially independent yet, besides, me leaving still doesn't change the fact that my mother, stepfather and brother are here. Most countries wouldn't let my parents in anyway as they're already too old to be of use working, my mom is 46, which isn't THAT old, but still too old to be accepted by other countries for work, my stepfather is 54 and he definitely won't get work being that old. Life here isn't THAT bad, I still have the privilege of being part of a middle class family who is for the most part supportive, sure if you compare some aspects to the life in a thriving first world country it may seem awful, but there are many countries worse off than us so I try to look at the brighter side, at least I'm not living in Afghanistan or Israel, North Korea, China, Russia (poorer parts especially), or in the poorer places right here in South Africa. Decent job opportunities are honestly my biggest concern for my future though, as it is next to impossible to get one without knowing someone on the inside or having a miracle occur. Since I don't want to work on a mine like my stepfather or be a police officer like my mother, I'll have to find an alternative. Lol sorry for the tangents, I like to ramble.

@@amithmalik4648 The problem with South Africa is that the political climate there is very tense nowadays and making a game taking place in such an environement would be too delicate and could give the studio a bad reputation and image, since stories in both the Far Cry saga and the GTA series turn around crimes and political statements, which would make the task of the studio practically impossible without getting themselves much negative attention. It would be perceived as insensitive for all sides, because it is not a situation as for example in North Korea, where the leader is universally hated, or in the Middle East, where many terrorist cells such as Isis are operating. It's politically ambiguous and all sides are technically just fed up "good guys" trying to survive in a violent environment after years and years of injustices and segregation from both sides. It's like the former racial struggles in the US; too easy to get burned if cutting the wrong wires. Maybe in time, once things settle down and times change, a Far Cry game in SA could be made.
But I could not see a GTA game over there, since it would be too unrealistic having all kinds of expensive cars and planes and bank heists taking place over there (also, the GTA series vehiculates the American dream and its desillusion, and portraying it in another country would be too bold and frankly out of place, so I'd rather not have any GTA main series game taking place anywhere else than the US).

If you live in the Western Hemisphere, you’re benefiting from the mayhem. I personally blame bad African leaders for allowing the problems to happen.
