    After a dark and lonely journey through the internet, I finally stumbled across a wise man. This man had all the answers to my questions and even to questions I've yet to ask. Now I must venture out once more, until I reach the AMAZON (.com) where I will apply this knowledge in my search, until I find this elusive ink which will fill my brush pens and my fountain pens. There I will add to cart and purchase this fine ink. As I patiently wait, I thank you wise youtube man.

    Hej Teoh Yi Chie! I follow your channel since a while now and I always recommend it for my friends who want to learn sketching or watercolor. Maybe you can answer my doubt. I got a big haul of art supplies but they are quite old. There are some inks, Higgins and rotring. The problem is that nearly all of them have two substances separated in the bottles. Yellowish liquid and some kind of colored stone in the bottom. I’ve read that they are not out of date but I don’t know how to “mix” the substances again. My main purpose is painting with them as watercolor so no pen nibs or fountain pens will be damaged. Thanks a lot for all the knowledge you already shared with me. Have a nice day!

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  5 лет назад +1

      You can just add those tiny metal beads (from jewelry) or ball bearing into the bottle and shake. This should mix the pigment and binder thoroughly.

    Fountain pens use fine capillary action to feed the ink, so suspended particles in India Ink will definitely clog it. Languages using pictograms like Mandarin, etc, Korean, Japanese require very black ink to do calligraphy.

    • @PaulaBean
      @PaulaBean 4 года назад +1

      In some inks the particles are so small that they don't clog the pen (but still require a monthly rinse & cleaning).

    Hi, Teoh! thanks for the great overview. I have used Noodler's Black, De Atramentis, then really loved using Platinum Carbon Black for the last year in about 8 of my fountain pens, but found then that it really stained my white & yellow Lamy and also clogged them up, so I couldn't get my white Lamy Joy to work. Now after getting some advice about cleaning them with toothbrush and dish soap, I have got them to work again, but am wondering now what ink to use. I am thinking of trying the Rohring & Klingner SketchINK, and I am just wondering which black waterproof ink is your current favorite at the moment? I was disappointed in the Noodler's as you said, sometimes smears, and disappointed in the De Atramentis Document Black as it just did not seem very black to me --- I really love the blackest blacks, like Aurora black ink, but that is not waterproof. Maybe I will try only using the Platinum Carbon in pens that are not white or yellow and .... just wondering what is your favorite now? Thanks much! since this was posted almost 4 years ago!! :-)

I see a lot of artists using colored ink in fountain pens but I can't really figure out which ones are appropriate for use. I do understand it must be labeled fountain pen ink, but I don't see many colored inks that are labeled as such, at least here in the United States. Any brands and colors that you like and think would be suitable I would love to hear about. Thank you!

(it can be for either fountain or dip pens) i've been testing various black inks on fabriano and arches watercolor papers and I find that many so-called waterproof inks take too long to dry and when they are dry they still bleed when applying a wash!

    Hi Teoh, Thank you for the great information in this video. I'm new to urban sketching and have watched a lot of your video on how to get started. I've since bought some entry level fountain pens like the Duke Fude, Lamy and TWISBI Eco. As I'm just a beginner, I do not want to invest in the more expensive waterproof ink and I've gotten a bottle of the 57ml Parker Quink (seems to be from China). The online description says it's for fountain pen use and it's "permanent ink". What is the difference between 'permanent ink' and 'waterproof ink' or 'bulletproof ink'. In your opinion, is it safe to use the Parker Quink ink on my new fountain pens? Thanking you in advance

    • @teohyc

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  7 лет назад +1

      Sumi ink is ground from ink blocks with water added. The particulars are not grounded as fine as they can be so they are most definitely going to clog brush pens. Sumi ink best used with normal brushes where they can be washed easily after each use.

      Just a thought.
      Experiment first with a few dabs or strokes of a fountain pen ink and a permanent ink.
      Use fountain pen ink for your TWSBI, use a dip pen/brush for your waterproof inks, then use a Clear coat ( Krylon's Crystal Clear) to seal the media. Give the coating time to cure then smear some water on the area and sea if the Fountain Pen ink holds ups.
      Just a thought.

    Is the Noodler's truly waterproof when painted over with a brush? I recently ordered two inks, one of them was the Atramentis document ink, the other Rohrer & Klingner permanent ink, because I was told by the shop that the Noodler's waterproof ink would smudge the top layer of ink when run over with a wet brush. Is this entirely wrong? I ask because the Noodler's ink is a bigger size and would be cheaper to use. I ordered from purepens.co.uk. They ship worldwide and have lots of the Noodler's inks. Not sure about that. You should use ink that says that it's safe for fountain pen use. Some examples are Noodlers Bulletproof Black ink, Sailor KiwaGuro, DeAtramentis Document

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  8 лет назад +35

      +Zefy P. Pigments are basically tiny particles that are grounded. This particles will choke your pen. Imagine putting sand into a water pipe. It will be difficult to clean the pens when they are choked also, especially for pens that cannot be dismantled.
      Indian ink is a class of ink that's heavily pigmented. Hence they should be avoided.

      There are, or were, several manufacturers who made fountain pen-style pens which were designed to hold India ink. I own one made by Osmiroid, the Osmiroid Sketch, which uses a bladder like an old Parker 51, and it's a real curiosity because it definitely does not clog with India ink, it has a very different feed and that may have something to do with it, but it IS scratchier than you would tend to like a sketch pen to be. I compare it to my rotring art pen, which does use fountain pen ink, and is an extra fine and not very flexible, which doesn't really lend itself to the most expressive sketching, but it's a much more comfortable draw than the osmiroid. Which may be one of the reasons why you just don't see that pen anymore. Or that manufacturer, for that matter. In general India ink is much more suitable to brush drawing, or dip pens which can be infinitely more flexible than most fountain pens today...or for use in technical pens, which some think are not very expressive, but a look at any of Robert Crumb's sketchbooks would reveal someone who is able to show that a technical pen can be as expressive as any other drawing instrument made by mankind.

      If you use Indian ink, you need to use dip pens. Indian ink in fountain pens will clog the pen. Indian ink is waterproof when dry, so you can use watercolour over them.

    Hey Teoh, I bought myself a bottle of Sailor Kiwa Guro ink in juli, and it was very good for my drawings and very good non soluble, When I colored my paintings with watercolor it did not fade out. But now suddenly on my fresh drawings the ink starts to fade very strong. Have you ever heard of this. the only thing that I know the ink was close to the heating, can that be the problem.
