    One of my favourite poor man meals I make for my family is shakshuka! Super easy, all you need is some spices, eggs, and tomatoes. Even my very carnivorous husband enjoys it for dinner. Used to have it weekly to help the grocery bill!

    Another money saving hack I do is I buy peppers whenever they’re on sale. Or in the about to go bad bin and take them home and cut them up with onions and put them in a bag in the freezer they are kinda pricey per pepper so buying them when they’re on sale is a game changer and add so much flavor and veg to meals

    Hi Sarah! Thank you for sharing some meal ideas! Regarding dry ground beef (or any meat), you can add a quarter teaspoon of baking soda per pound of meat to keep it moist even if overcooked :) you don’t end up tasting any of the baking soda, and it works wonders! I usually mix the baking soda with a tablespoon of water before pouring it over the meat in the pan and mixing. Thanks again, and have a good week!

      @@Coinstarsilversearcher2From a quick google search it sounds like this guy is talking about taking large amounts daily and long term for heartburn relief. The amount consumed in baking or cooking would be extremely minimal compared to what he’s talking about. I’ve never seen any studies saying that baking soda isn’t safe to eat.

    Sarah I do need to make two comments since I really like you, and I’m Mexican hahah sorry, the skillet is Tex-Mex (US) not Mexican at all… just FYI, the street corn is just right out of the steam (mayo, cheese, chili powder and lime, that’s it) 2min of preparation (and no butter)… and just to raise a bit of awareness, these are not a poor man meals hahaha well, poor men in first world country! I would call them affordable meals, or budget friendly… however, to share some more ideas, for me it would be 1-2 beans tacos (just the tortilla, two spoons of beans, slice of avocado), or tuna salad with crackers, mixed with avocado instead a of mayo… beef/meat is for rich people, which brings me to the point of awareness, here 70% of the population lives in poverty, and relies on beans for protein and I believe they receive free (fortified) milk from the government, and of course these people have no nutritional knowledge (they don’t think, oh here’s my protein intake, they just eat when food’s available)… so summary for this last point, we need to thank every meal that comes to us, stop wasting food, take restaurants left overs to give away to people who need it, these are rich meals! And I’m glad and thankful I/we can have them in our table, be grateful ❤️

    These are some great ideas! Thank you for sharing. I have the privilege of a similar food budget, but I work with a population that truly knows what it is to work at or near the poverty line. They aren’t able to make choices about saving for the future-they are just trying to not have bare shelves at the end of the month. I think a different title for foods and meals that stretch the budget of families who are experiencing more privilege than others could be more inclusive and aware of others in different situations.

    The key is keeping on top of the cost of proteins - this is where the expense is.
    My husband and I have some meals with plant proteins eg beans, lentils, which are cheaper, then have others with more expensive proteins such as fish, chicken or meat.
    I find it inspiring that millions of people in India are Hindu and are vegetarian. The only animal proteins they eat are milk and milk based products and eggs.
    I aim for an average of £1 a meal per person.
    We could go much lower if we went vegetarian and even lower if we went vegan.
    The key is minimal processed food and cooking from scratch.
    We are in our mid 50's.
    Now when we go out to a restaurant we are usually disappointed as we know we can cook better at home.

    Another method for cooking the corn using the grill: You can keep the corn in their husks, and grill them in the husks. It steams them inside. Grill 3-5 mins, rotating them 3-4 times for a total of 15-20 mins. Let cool on a baking sheet for 5-10 mins, then peel them and serve. So delicious, and all the cooking is outside!

    Do people eat corn as a whole meal? I'm also Canadian and we eat a lot of corn on the cob in the summer but it's always part of a meal, not the entire meal (e.g., we might have burgers and corn as a veggie side dish). I love corn but I wouldn't find it filling enough for a whole meal (or very satisfying).

    We have always made the mayonnaise at home (Spain) and could never understand how nobody seemed to make it in US or Canada, at least nobody I knew or saw in videos, they always use the commercial jar one, which in find horrible. You made my day making it! 😅 and it is almost exactly the same! I just use lemon juice instead of vinegar and only olive oil, the softer kind, it tastes so much better imo😊

    I know Sarah has made some sourdough videos in the past, but I don't think I've seen one about starter. I tried once, it rose beautifully on the second day then it fell overnight before I fed it again. Despite discarding and feeding it for several more days, it never rose again, it just made a ton of hooch until I finally gave up. I know this is probably a silly question, but does anyone know what I did wrong? 😅

    • @idepartasair
      @idepartasair 9 месяцев назад +1

      Add more flour during feedings! The starter should be thick after being fed. Are you using a scale or measuring cups/spoons?

    • @minnesotamomma22
      @minnesotamomma22 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@idepartasair Thank you! I will try adding more flour, and I will probably need to order a scale haha :)

    • @user-ch7zi7zn8t
      @user-ch7zi7zn8t 9 месяцев назад

      I’ve never used a scale. I’m an eyeballed to a fault sometimes. I make it into a THICK batter. Like it’s hard to mix in and will not drizzle whatsoever. After its done its thing for 12/24 hours whatever cycle you’re doing, it’ll loosen up a lot and be able to drizzle for the most part. I have followed so many recipes and have always ended up like you. Just disregard theirs and just add extra flour and try until it works!
