I'm glad you pointed out how important it is to always install a new throw out bearing when you pull a transmission. If a bearing siezes, it will eat the pressure plate and everything else in there; it just isn't worth the risk. Don't ask me how I know that!

For lack of power- check for vacuum leaks in the intake! Not just visually, but hook up a smoker and smoke the thing. On mine there were a BUNCH of cracks in the old intake pipe (smearing rubber cement over the whole thing helped), as well as a few leaks around the throttle plate shaft. Patching all that made the old truck a bit happier and bumped up gas mileage a little bit.
It's funny though, can hardly do 70 just hauling one person, but put two tons of stuff in the bed/trailer and it still performs the same! It's like these Rangers want to do work, great little trucks.

I concur. I used to drive one to job sites and in particular the automatic seemed to really enjoy pulling a load. Running empty it never really seemed happy and the shifts were all over the place. Surprising good on dirt roads though. I guess it just wasn't designed as a commuter.

Also, tightly wrap 1 layer of Duct tape around the knerled threads on the shifter handle and hammer home the shift knob. It wont go anywhere after that. I love the old Ranger. I have a 99 Ranger XLT that my dad bought new, 3.0 liter V6, automatic, power steering, power brakes, a/c, cruise control, am, fm, and cassette player. He only drove it a couple miles a day to and from his work. Around 2012 dad asked if he could park it under a carport at my house as mom wanted the space in their garage for her gardening. After about a year, dad asked if I'd like to have it. I immediately took his offer. Today it's back in the garage at Mom's. It gets driven about once a month. Still looks like new and has 55k miles. I'll never sell it. Maybe someday I'll pass it down to someone in the family.

I bought it with 64,000 miles on the clock. I swapped the 4.0 for a Fox Body 302W and I kept the AOD4 trans (which I regret because it had to be rebuilt five times by a questionable shop), and I also installed an Explorer Express Eaton M90 supercharger kit. It had shorty headers, a full cold air intake (that I fabricated out of intercooler piping), and a full 3" dual exhaust with custom 48" glasspacks and 14" chrome slant cut tips. It was only 2WD, but it was alot of fun in a straight line and it sounded AMAZING! I also had a 1995 2WD Ranger Super (first year for the new body style) with a 4.0 OHV and the new 4R55E electronic transmission that I bought for $500 and that thing would seriously lay an 11 for 150 feet from a dead stop.

Man, this is a blast from the past for me, too, lol. My first truck was a 94 mazda b4000, so basically, a ranger. I got it for free from my freshman year teacher it had been sitting in the woods behind her house for 12 years. Her husband got it new and drove it till 2003 when the fuel pump went out and he parked it. Picked it up and put a fuel pump in it and a starter, and she ran like a top man. Miss that truck, in all, put about 700 into a free truck and sold it a year later for 2.5k.

My first "project" vehicle was an 89 ranger, ran the hell out of it. It was rough and I treated it that way. Smoke show going down the highway 1 day when the quart a day oil habit went a little heavy. Ripped the motor out tgat summer and plopped in a junkyard 94 mustang motor. I loved that truck. I miss that truck.

Here in our area Rangers of that generation are very common. Many are still in use as daily drivers for the original owners, farmers, and as parts delivery trucks by local parts stores. Our closest neighbor had one, 6cyl "step side", 5sp manual, etc., etc. until he decided to give it to his stepson to drive to work and tech school. That truck had over 150,000 original owner miles on it, with the factory engine and transmission! The only place it had ever been serviced at was our local Ford dealership which was where our neighbor had purchased it new. Sad to say, many of the Rangers still in use in our area, out lasted the dealerships where they were sold and many of them are on their third and fourth owners. I have no idea how many of them have had their engines and transmissions replaced over the years but I'm sure it would be more than a few. By the way, your truck falls in the high middle range of the condition range for those still on the road around here which goes kind of like this: #1: Survived a young war. #2: Still running but nobody knows why. #3: Damn good truck that runs like a champ but looks like crap. #4: Looks and runs like new and may have been kept under cover and bubble rapped for most of its like. I really wish I had purchased one way back when as I'm pretty sure I would still be driving it. By the way, don't forget that your Ranger shares many parts with its Mazda "twin" of the era.

If you ever have to do a headliner and want to make it easy, you can get a very small roller to help guide the material against the glue. You can use generic canned spray adhesive, but it tends to let go with heat cycles faster than automotive glue. My father used to spray the back of the material and roll it down onto the board

Powerful, easier on gas, torque... the thing was a workhorse. I loaded all the materials for a 10x12 shed on the back, all the lumber, plywood, shingles, hardware, and concrete blocks for support on the back of it once... basically, i put a 10x12 building on the back and hauled it. The first vehicle that was ever in my name was a 1994 Ranger. It was the 4.0 extended cab flavor and it was the same color purple too. Engine was a tank in it and was the best part of the truck. Transmission locked up on it after spending $3,000 fixing other issues in it. I finally called it quits and sold the truck for scrap value. Maybe should have thrown another transmission and transfer case in it, but it was a lemon since it had so many hands working on it before I got to it. But I do remember pegging out that speedometer one time running that engine to the rev limit every gear because I ran it out of gas (faulty fuel gauge).

I had a '94 Explorer with those factory automatic 4 wheel drive hubs. They started self engaging while driving down the highway. You want to talk about severe grinding and banging noises coming from the front end. It would make the steering wheel jump in your hand. At the time Ford wanted almost $400 a piece for new hubs. WARN sold a manual conversion kit to replace those hubs for under $400 complete for both sides. You still had to use the button on the dash to engage the transfer case, but you also had to get out and lock the hubs in. They were stronger than the factory auto hubs and never gave me another issue.
