That valve set you learned about is Hondas CVCC (Compound Vortex Combustion Chamber), they used that design from the first gen civics in the 70s all the way up to like 89, those motors are "stratified charge" engines, which essentially means that the little mini carb and extra valve set introduce fuel early in the compression stroke to even out the combustion vortexes in the cylinders, and by purposely predetonating a LITTLE bit, they managed to increase that engines thermal efficiency by like 13%. Those engines had an overall efficiency of nearly 83%, allowing them to pass california emissions tests when straight piped. Absolute nightmare to work on when the vacuum systems go, but if everything's in order, well my 83 accord averaged 48mpg city and 59-63mpg highway. It's a SUPER cool system, but its insanely complicated for it's time. Leave it to honda to make the most technologically advanced shit box of all time, and still manage to be one of the most bullet proof engines ever built. I believe the engine code for that design was EK (not to be confused with the EK civic) so if it was a 1.5 liter, 1.6, 1.8, it would be titled as an EK15, EK16, or EK18 motor. Did I mention they're absolute tanks
Oh, and that design ONLY works if the engine is reverse flow. As soon as you move the exhaust to the other side of the head, it's no longer a functional system and the predet just blows the motors to shit

The 1978 CVCC didn't have enough cylinder spacing and would blow the head gasket between the cylinders only.
      My parents bought one new.
My dad would limp home, park in the garage, pop the hood and go eat his supper while car cooled off.
Had a hook in the ceiling, took hood off, removed head bolts, lifted head about an inch, slid out blown gasket, slid in new gasket and reassembled. Drove to work next day.
First time it happened, he had disassembled it all and checked the deck and head; Tool & Die maker by trade. It was all as it should be. There just wasn't enough gasket material between the cylinders.
A new head gasket hung on the garage wall for years, even after the car was wore out and gone.
That was their first new car.
As a very small child, learned how an engine works during one of these gasket failures. He spun the engine by hand while i watched the cylinders move and could see the valves directly above them.
I was amazed it could do it all so fast and not blow up.

When it was first produced in the early 1980s the Civic was actually CVCC, or Controlled Vortex Combustion Chamber, which you found out about. The spark touched off a small pocket of normal fuel/air that then ignited a lean mixture that made up the rest of the chamber. Quite a boost in economy.

well, my "Baked Alaska" (clear coat has been burnt off) residing for all its 20 years in the SW (ARIZONA/NEW MEXICO) the inner frame, well it's still baby behind fresh as the day it rolled off the assembly line. So if you don't look at the skin and concentrated on its inner workings, mechanically, she's still an infant.

It was ugly, it topped out at about 80mph, and it cornered with all the grace and agility of a drunk Rhino, but it had a 5spd, it only cost me $500, it was as good as any Subaru in snow, and it ran like a tank! Never once left me on the side of the road.
In the end it was rust that killed the beast. I put it in for inspection and found out the entire rear axle was basically hanging on by a thread. The mechanic bought it off me for the motor and trans which he put in another civic that he drove for years afterword. You just can't kill a Honda engine.

I'm 11 months late for this party, but I had to say that I had a 1984 Toyota Tercel, 4cyl. 5 speed, 4 door hatchback. It had 47,000 miles on it when I bought it. The first thing I did to it was put new spark plugs and wires in it and oil and fuel filter and 10w40 oil.
I took my boys to the car show in St. Ignas just over the Mackinac bridge in Michigan. And I got 54 miles to the gallon. I actually only used 3/4 of a tank of gas going up there and back home to Grand Rapids. That little fukker was the best vehicle I ever owned for gas mileage. But one day it decided to blow the head gasket and crack the block between number and 3 cylinder. I don't know why, because it never overheated, but it was blowing oil into the radiator and it just gave up the ghost for no reason. It lasted 3 years and was well worth the $350 I paid for it.

Exactly. @Junkyard Digs, if you pull the valve cover off, you'll see that the EW1 engine actually has 16 valves. Three large valves, then the small CVCC valve. The oil smoke might be caused by loose valve retainers, especially since it doesn't completely go away after the engine is warm.
The system was used on all US model carbed Hondas through 1987, except for the Accord, which went to a standard carb setup in 1986. Allowed them to run without catalytic converters through 1979 in California, and 1980 in the 49 state emissions markets. 1981 was the first year that they installed a converter on all US model cars. Mixture is set on the Keihin carburetors using a propane enrichment system that's connected to the engine.
