Growling was a thing that used to put me away. Opeth was the band that got me used to it. First album I listened from them was Damnation which is very mellow one. No growls and no distorted guitars, but I did like it a lot and started to listen other their stuff which then got me used to growling also because I liked the music and kept listening. In this concert and in general this period of time Mikael Åkerfeldts growls weren't in best shape. I'm not sure if he had lost his voice a bit or what, but they aren't that strong than earlier. Also their newer albums they don't have growls anymore which led me to also think that he had problems with his growls, but I think he has better growls nowadays again. Not sure about that, but what I have heard few newer lives they are better again. I don't mind though this concert is great whether his growls were at his best or not.
That being said, I do like more of their albums which have both growls and clean singing. The newest albums are good too, even without the growls, but I do like the contrast with the growl and clean vocal parts of their older albums. This song was from their first album and it doesn't belong to my favorite ones even though it's a good one.
Some of my own suggestions from Opeth. Ghost of Perdition, Reverie/Harlequin Forest, Blackwater Park, The Moor, To Rid The Disease(mellow one), Hessian Peel. Now that I'm trying to think recommendation I find it really hard since they have so many good songs. Ghost of Perdition is usually the first one people suggest, but some people then again find other songs better so hard to say a good song what you would like. Anyway cheers for a nice new reaction channel. You've got a new subscription here and geez I'm writing a novel here. :)

Hi Muthdarr, thanks for the comment! You know your growls! I'm not against them in music, if you listen to some of the Devin Townsend stuff I've been reacting to it's full of it, but it's more musical and in keeping with the track. It probably means I need to listen to more Opeth to get my ear in! Anyway, thanks again for the sub and for listening. Jim

Hi Jim. I really enjoy your relaxed and wholesome analysis of the songs you embark upon. I'd highly recommend listening to the studio version of future Opeth songs to really get the full experience and to get a better appreciation for the vocals. I assure you, the growls are out of this world and really emphasizes the greatness that is Opeth. I'll throw in two recommendations as well, one being considered their magnus opus: The Moor. The other is a an outlier of their sadder/mellower side: Faith In Others. Keep it up and enjoy the journey! /Cheers from Sweden

Talking through or pausing and talking is definitely best. Most people will forget about what they wanted to comment on by the end of the video.

Good ear. Both Purple and Maiden were huge influences for Mikael. As a matter of fact, Opeth has covered both bands, brilliantly(soldier of fortune and remember tomorrow). Check them out.

Cheers Xenophon - I'm not really consciously trying to find something in particular - I think I've been lucky that the songs I've gone with so far have been pretty solid! Thanks for listening :)

Funny you say ritchie blackmore, since mike(the vocalist and "mastermind" of opeth) always say that deep purple is one of his musical influence, and the album art of this dvd is a tribute to a dvd from deep purple. They did a cover, "soldier of fortune", you should react to it.

BTW, have you listened to Between the Buried and Me? Interesting because I find most prog metal bands come from Europe these days and these guys are from the states, North Carolina i think. I think you'll like them. Try Extremophile Elite here ruclips.net/video/dM8WjgRA6o8/видео.html
