Im 51 and she passed in 1977. I still think of her often. I celebrated her 80th birthday last night at a restaurant. Just me and "her" and my tears.

I lost my mother to cancer when I was 4 years old. I’m 64 years old now and I still can’t get past it. To make things worse I was an unplanned pregnancy and my mother had cancer while pregnant, which suppresses the immune system and often makes the cancer spread faster. I really did feel I was the cause of her death.
I was mostly ok when I was raising my children and working full time, but now that I’m retired and my friends and children have moved far away, (the US is literally to huge to go visit people unless you have the money to travel), the grief is hitting me again.
My mother died alone in hospital because children weren’t allowed to visit back then. My sisters went off to college within 2 years and never moved back home. My father turned into a raging abusive alcoholic and all my aunts and grandparents were gone. (I was a mistake so everyone was a lot older than me).
My father removed all the photos were put away and her name was never spoken again. I’ve tried counseling many times over the years and honestly it hasn’t helped me at all.
It was so horribly embarrassing every Mother’s Day in school when all the other kids made gifts for their mom. If anyone ever asked me something as simple as “when will your mom pick you up”, I would freeze and be unable to speak. I now recognize that I was having panic attacks even as a very young child. Going through puberty was a nightmare as you mention in your video. Why didn’t my adult sisters realize how awful that would be for me?
At any rate I hope things go better for you than they did for me. You seem very strong and smart and I know you will be better off than I was/am. Best, Gail

Thank you for this video. I lost my Mum 30 years ago and it still resurfaces. Like you I couldn't have got through it without the two cats that my Mum and I had. When they passed away, 11 weeks apart, 10 years after Mum, that is when my grief really came out, so my heart goes out to you and Smokey.

My mother passed away from cancer when I was only four years old. I really did feel embarrassed about growing up without a mother. I felt like I was so alone, but I started to realize that I wasn’t and I’m not the only who had to experience this. Hoping you heal ❤

Grief is like a tightly sealed bottle filled with emotions. You may keep pushing your feelings down, but eventually, something as simple as spilling a cup of tea can burst that bottle wide open, releasing all the emotions at once.

My mum died from cancer when I was 10. I can't tell you how strongly i relate to every word you have said, even down to the "your mum" classic schoolground insults hitting too close to home, not having someone there to help you with the basics, shoppibg frmor a bra, periods, shaving your legs, it can make you feel like an alien.
