- We've been filming Tiny Desk concerts for more than 10 years. While revisiting our archives, we discovered that some of our earliest concerts never made it to RUclips!
Watch Sondre Lerche’s Tiny Desk concert from 2009: www.npr.org/2009/11/02/114336...
Stephen Thompson | November 2, 2009
When the makers of the 2007 romantic comedy Dan in Real Life wanted to convey an air of goodhearted whimsy, they turned soundtrack-writing duties over to Norwegian-born singer-songwriter Sondre Lerche. And why wouldn't they? For all his jazz-informed skills on the guitar, Lerche's greatest weapon is his flair for lightness and likeability.
Known as a varsity-level banterer on stage, Lerche puts all those skills to good use in this charming Tiny Desk Concert in the NPR Music offices. Performing three songs from his new album Heartbeat Radio - and introducing the title track with the disclaimer, "It's taking some issue with radio, but it's not about you guys" - he conveys all the lilting sweetness his fans have come to expect. he is just so criminally underrated.
we, as fans, must do our part! I do mine by blaring Patience from the top of my roof at 4am. My neighbors love me. ;P
I hear you
First word that comes to mind. Way more people should know about Sondre Lerche.
I saw this guy open for Nada Surf at The Bottleneck in Lawrence Kansas in like '04 or so. Thought his name was a band. It was just him and a guitar. I went out the next day and got Faces Down, and it's a top 10 all time album for me.
Invite this man back again
Currently in Norway (Los Angeles before that) new music out :)
This needs more upvotes!
PLEASE HAVE HIM BACK NOW THAT HE JUST RELEASED A NEW, BEAUTIFUL ALBUM
seconding this!
Most underrated musician of all time
I’ve been listening to Sondre Lerche since 2007 and I never realised his surname was pronounced that way! 🤪
Well, he pronounced it in a very strange way, I believe. Sondre Lerche is norwegian and in norwegian the "ch" is pronounced as a "k". As a norwegian speaking person myself, I would pronounce "Lerche" as "Lerke". He grew up in Bergen which is a city heavy influenced by german and dutch, so maybe his ancestors were german, or the family name was changed from Lerke to Lerche. My mother grew up in Bergen and we can trace her family-tree back to Königsberg in East Prussia. By the way, "Lerche" in german means lark, and "lerke" in norwegan also means lark.
This was terrible. Sondre is better than this.
Same!
he's one of the best songwriters of our genereation
Dang I literally got chills. Nice to hear Sondre Lerche again after all this time!

I forgot this guy even existed. I used to listen to his stuff back around this time.
"Sleep on Needles" was another good track he had.
One of best musicians ! I can't believe i still listen to his song from 13 years ago till now 💕
Love Sondre! I saw him at Boz Scaggs' Slim's in SF during the second album "Two-Way Monologue" album. Great show. This was like 20 years ago, mid-2000s. Incredible!
Uno de los mayores genios de la actualidad. Lo vi sobre estas fechas en el Primavera Sound de Barcelona: Increíble. Gracias por existir y por compartir. Su último disco es para mí, el mejor.
WELP, time to watch DAN IN REAL LIFE on this fine Saturday morning :) ❤️
I saw him around this time, it was a great show. He's such a nice dude and he's so energetic. I'd see him again in a heartbeat!
I remember first hearing Sondre on the Dan In Real Life soundtrack and I loved it. No idea he was on NPR. Thank you for the re-upload. I loved it. Great work as always.

geeeez, as someone who loves sondres music and would love to study each song, the videographer nailed it here. Its hard to find accurate tabs or even chord progressions so its awesome to see a close up of the major chord progressions!!

I've been listening to Sondre since Sleep on Needles came out (2002) and had no idea this gem of a video existed until now. Can't believe Heartbeat Radio was over 10 yrs ago.

Thanks for releasing this from the vault!
Totally enjoyed that, great songs!
Do love me some Sondre Lerche. I saw him at the Birmingham Academy about 2001 (think it was anyway). It was just after Faces Down was released. Really small gig; he was just in the bar sharing a drink with us beforehand - had a nice chat with him and a good sing-along.
OMYGOD BABY SONDRE! THA GREATEST VERSION OF SONDRE

Hi guys ! Let me introduce you to my husband. Yeah, i know he sings so well.
Oh, come on. We all know he's married to his music. :P
His surname means 'lark' in German. Destined to sing, this one.
I love Tiny Desk for you guys expose me to musical artists I wouldn't normally encounter their gifts.
😂😂 that first song made me want to sit on the front porch and play guitar or Congo's with him. At the end of it, I heard Frank Sinatra/ Michael Buble.
I like his style
