- Went whole hog and tilted this mega-beast.
In the video I mention that only the "movie" video setting looks good but after playing it for awhile I changed my mind. The "standard" setting looks good too.
No children were harmed in the filming of this video.
The sound is terrible. Next time I will make sure the dryer and stereo are turned off. Sorry everybody I'm a newb.
The focus nobs are for horizontal and vertical focus. All late generation Trinitrons are like this. I don't know what I was talking about when I said, "..inner and outer focus.." I don't even smoke weed! No excuse.
Trinitrons are simply the best CRTs..
Bro I just got done watching every one of your videos in the TV review series…I love it!!!!!!!!
Thanks! I got another one coming at the beginning of the month.
"Once you get into the serious CRT habit, you find you do crazy shit like this." lol I concur-- just packing a KV36 into the house in the era of 20 lb LCDs is crazy shit. But I did it. We do it. Nice set man.
Thanks. Hope your set works out for you. There is always some luck involved with these old TVs. Large Sonys are my personal favorite.
Holy crap awesome find!!! The picture of this crt is insanely clear!
Thanks. The flatscreen is really important. It's weird but the curved glass on my 35 inch doesn't bother me in yoko but it's really distracting in tate. I think the curved glass would be okay on a smaller tv but I prefer the larger screens, especially for shooters.
"He's gone too far." Hahaha! Great pickup, and excellent TATE setup. It's worth the trouble!
Thanks!
WOWW image looks perfect !
Excellent work my friend. 👌
Thanks!
I found the KV-27SF100L for 10 bucks at a garage sale, which is solid for retro gaming (movie mode is indeed the best setting because the others are too dark). Your version is definitely like the Cadillac of Trinitrons
Badass man,ive done about everything with a crt but i never dared tate one that big, smart move w the blocks,it looks epic as hell, good games too
Thanks! Yeah I'm really pleased with it. I haven't had any problems with it. I've found that I have a slight advantage on the large screen compared to playing on my 20 inch crts. Plus all the explosions just look badass on the big screen.
@@riggel8804 i miss my 36 wega, big crt's are sweet,i got a pvm1341 right now but may add another if i ever see any again
@@lock7852 I still run across pro monitors at a decent price from time to time. I think you will find one if you keep looking. Good luck!
This exact tv just popped up on my local Craiglist today for $50 with stand and remote. I already have a KV-32FV310, a 32XBR100 and a KV-25XBR, otherwise I'd get it. It's a nice TV, but I think I've already fallen off the deepend! When you said it's very similar to an FS series...I think I lost interest, as I already have a KV-27FS120. I can go smaller, just not bigger. Thanks for you video, it was very helpful!
Man that TV looks fantastic
Thanks!
Looks good 😍
Thanks!
great find. tvs like this are harder and harder to find now. back in 2013-2014...you could find them all day on CL. now its just slim pickings or people trying to get too much for them. I have a 27FS12 i picked up a while back but for some reason I'm missing the door :( Always hunting for more though of course. Brave man working around all that wattage/voltage.
Thanks! Yeah I've noticed that it's getting harder to find Trinitrons with component too. Luckily for me most people in my area want the 27 inch or smaller TVs. Or they only want the kv36fv310. That leaves everything else for me to pick up at my leasure.
@@riggel8804 I missed out on the same model tv too. someone listed it a few days ago. must have just been scooped up yesterday lol
I just got one of these today and love it
Very good. Probably my favorite CRT.
very cool, please do more videos on correcting the image and tutorials on these xbr's.. I recently picked up a 910 and 960
Those are hd crts. I don't know much about them but there are guys on redit crt gaming that do. I don't think you can get scanlines out of them but you can lower the input lag by feeding the crt it's native resolution.
I have thought about doing a video on the differences between video modes i.e. vivid, standard, and also how to adjust sharpness.
What I like about the Black TV you have is that its a bubble but doesn't curve too much. Bubble TV works the best with light guns from what I notice.
The XBR curves quite a bit, it's not as bad as a JVC d series and there is some charm to the Sony single plane curve.
I thought that light guns would work better on a curved glass but I haven't found this to be the case. So far there is no clear winner for light guns. Honestly you can't go wrong with any large crt and light guns...just remember to turn the brightness and contrast up.
Nice! I actually rather like HD CRTs for my Xbox and GameCube, but I totally agree on 240p for older systems
I had a hd xbr at one point and I junked it because of the lag and 240p upscaling. I wish I would have hung onto it. I bet it would have been bad ass for 480p gaming
This is a beautiful thing.
Lmaooo… , “luckily i have children and they don’t know the dangers that’s why i have them do it”
beautiful
very nice, i got almost the same setup :D
shmups are so chill
Thanks! I thought I was the only person shmuping it up on a big ass crt. I'm having some issues now with MiSTer. Some of the tate games display upside down with no dip switch settings to flip the screen. and there is no fucking way I am flipping this TV just to play pacman.
@@riggel8804 im still on a raspberry pi3b with a pi2scart but im planning to upgrade to a mister setup, mister is the future! :D
@@MrBroken030 I was on the pi3b for awhile but the input lag was killing me. There was this game willow arcade I just couldn't beat with the lag and then when I got setup with crtemudriver I beat it right away. I talk about it in more detail on my Willow arcade playthrough video.
@@riggel8804 lol willow, i just downloaded that last week, snesdrunk did a review on it, it looks fun!
@@MrBroken030 I trolled the snesdrunk comment section for a year bugging him to review Willow arcade. I thought he would like it because it plays like a snes platformer. Turns out he has a dislike for arcade platform games. You need to use runahead if you are going to 1cc willow arcade. Or use the MiSTer. The game has 3 frames of lag baked into the rom and when you combine that with the 3 frames of lag from emulatuon, it's just too much.
Amazing! I own a working Sony KV-35XBR48, 2 Sony KV-32FS100's and many more CRT's that I have stored up in my storage unit! Today, I found a Sony KV-36FS100 on my street surprisingly, although I don't know if it works as when me, my father, and his friend picked it up, it was leaking water out, so I am going to wait at least a week and open it up so that it can dry all out.
I used to work on pcbs a little as a slot tech. We would soak pcbs in soapy water , rinse and dry them out. Electronics like a bath from time to time. Just like me.... Just make sure you dry it out before you plug it in. I apologise if you already know all this.
I've got a bunch myself. How do you think the xbr48 compares to the wegas? At first I thought it was just as sharp but now I think the wegas are a tiny bit sharper.
@@riggel8804 To be honest with you, it's way too close to call, but I feel like that the KV-35XBR48 it better when it comes to video game consoles that were released in the 1990s as flat picture tubes didn't exist throughout most of the 1990s until Sony introduced it in 1998. That's just me however as I used to own a KV-32FS120. Still, it just depends on anyone's perspective. Btw I'm 16.
@@blazuma111 cool thanks for the feedback.
I used to repair and sell (or at least try to sell) CRTs. About half the people that contacted me were young like yourself. This has led me to believe that we are witnessing the beginning of a new hobby. Retrogaming is going to be like classic car collecting. Young and old alike appreciate classic cars AND classic video games.
Looks dam good
Thanks! Merry Christmas
Using your own children to adjust potentiometers on the inside of a deadly CRT... Genius. I gotta get me some kids lol
I can always make more kids but CRTs are limited.
@@riggel8804 HAHAHAHA
Hahahaha
I know the videos is old, but that is one attractive looking TV!
ye
I’m still hunting Craigslist for this beast model and possibly Facebook marketplace if I can find it for free. I had a chance to pick up one about 6 months ago but I couldn’t find my buddy in time to help carry the beast before it got swooped up.
I will make room in the basement if I do manage to snag this model. I’ve hunted and got many of Sony Trinitrons in the past couple years and some I gave away and some just went out and some I still have.
The thrill I used to get actually driving up to 60 miles or so to score these bad boys will never be forgotten. There’s nothing like gaming to the soft glow of the PVMs and CRTs. 📺
Haha me too. I drove about 4 hours round trip to get this tv. It's been my favorite for awhile now. It's my main crt. I actually quite using it as a tate monitor because I like watching movies on it so much.
I am curious to see how you supported it on its side. I am thinking about doing this with a smaller WEGA myself. Did you have any problems with the yoke adjustment due to being sideways? Great video.
I didn't have any problems with this tv on its side but I did end up supporting the weight of the tube with blocks of wood. It's in the video. My Toshiba does not like being on it's side though. It has purity issues when I put it on it's side. Probably due to inferior shielding around the tube. You should be fine with a 27 inch Sony.
I also noticed the menu still looked wonky after fixing geometry, glad I'm not going crazy lol
Cool CRT man. Have you gotten the chance to try light guns on it to see if it works?
Hell yeah. I love me some Time Cirsis 3.
The light gun test is superfluous. It's not hard to tell if a tv is upscaling. You can tell just by looking at the screen.
I find a bunch of these on the street, I already own a 32" sony trinitron curve but,now I have a reason to save another crt ..
Get em while you can. It's drying up.
I always thought XBRs would have high voltage regulators but your picture test is great, informative. Btw do you think my Sony Trinitron 25XBR has a HVR? I uploaded a short video doing your test to see if its a prosumer, let me know what you think if you get a chance to see it.
I can't tell from your video. You need to hold the camera very close and not move it. Then turn the picture all the way up and down.
@@riggel8804 oh, I had to move the camera to prove that I was raising the picture setting because the image didn’t have significant bloom. But I can say the white lines did get a slightly bigger but Idk if that’s normal for older HVRs. I’ll do the test with some of my other monitors in comparison.
@@gleamingtv3946 That's what I figured. I doubt it has a voltage regulator but it might
That would be cool if it did
@@riggel8804 After testing the 25XBR and comparing it to your XBR200 I’ve come to the conclusion that the 25XBR does have a voltage regulator because your XBR200 drastically changes when you increase the picture setting and you said yours is in great condition, the 25XBR doesn’t change that much. also I just did another short vid comparing my 25XBR to my 2950q and they are very similar, but of course the 2950q will look better because it’s newer, bigger and higher quality.
@@gleamingtv3946 That's interesting. I wonder why the smaller model has a voltage regulator and the larger one does not. Maybe there is info in the user manual.
I just saw an xbr250 for sale, same price as a wega fs100 haha what do you think? Have some differences comparing to wegas?
Shit. Pick em both up then you can decide for yourself which is better and dump the one you don't like. If I had to choose I would pick the 250.
What resolution are you using?
are you using an Intel CPU?
Are you using CRT switcres?
How did you get a proper signal to work on your tv
The only resolution this tv will display is 480i/240p (they are the same res).
Only certain GPUs work. I use an old ATI card.
I am using switch res. It is awesome.
CRTEmudriver is the crux of the biscuit. Follow the instructions on their website and it will work. You will probabley need a vga to component transcoder. It might be easier ti find a rgb to component transcoder and getting a cable with vga on one end and scart on the other. Good luck. It takes some time and effort.
Just checked the crt in my folks basement and it's this model, gonna get some help and get it over to my house. I'm the guy who loves curved Sonys but maybe I gotta sit down and get the geometry set right then play. Since it has Componet already I won't have to rgb mod it. Plus it has matching stand, my dad got it new in 2000 and was only used till 2005. So it's low hours
Out of all my crts this one is my favorite. Very sharp with excellent colors. It's one downside is that it doesn't have a deep black compared to other crts. Mine needed a white balance correction. It had too much blue. Good luck.I think you will be pleased. Hopefully the geometry is okay
Wish me luck! There's a seller in my area who listed their 36-inch Trinitron XBR, with the original stand and a separate cabinet full of A/V goodies, all apparently for completely free. Best part is, they are located approximately 1.5 miles away from me (I found the listing on the sale section of Nextdoor, of all platforms!) I messaged the seller about two weeks ago, and they said guests are staying in their room where the TV is, so I'd need to wait around three weeks for them to clear out, and they would message me back afterwards to see if I was still interested. Hopefully the deal comes through, I'll be one nerdishly happy camper if it does. :)
careful. Most of the xbrs are hd crts and not worth the trouble in my opinion. THe only xbrs I would recomend picking up are the xbr48, xbr200 and xbr250
@@riggel8804 Thank you for the tips. I remember you warned against HD-CRTs in your video here. I can guarantee it is not an HD set, though. It is either a 200 or 250 series.

2 years later how do you feel about it? I picked this exact model up 2 weeks ago for $75. Came with the original stand, remote, and manual and is in near perfect condition. So far it seems to be worth the money.

Where do you get your magnets for convergence adjustments?
I buy them from home depot. You can secure them with double sided tape
I haven't heard of this model until now. I have a 36fv310, 27fv310, 35xbr48, JVC D series 36" and 20"
Them sum big tubes. How do you move them around?

@@thatsmycar8150 i use a rolling cart for mine and I make sure to not set them on the ground. They are really hard to pick up off the floor, even with 2 people
Xbr eh? Are these XBR'S any good? Compared to the 450xbr
I like the original xbr, the xbr48, the 200 and the 250. The rest of the xbrs, including the 450, are boat anchors imo. I got no love for the hd crt.
Mine is a 34" dark gray (KV-EF34M80), but I prefer the silver. It's my favorite color, I have a Hitachi here (C15F27) in the color I like. Taste is indeed subjective, of course. I found the same thing when I turned my TV 180 degrees, with the discoloration... at first I didn't understand what the heck was going on, until I turned back. Sadly, my TV loses the blue color and while tapping sometimes brings it back, it's not sustainable. I'm not knowledgeable enough to fix it and no one in my area can fix CRTs... it breaks my heart, as it's my most prized possession. The scanlines look beautiful. Maybe someday I'll learn enough, I think it's a cold solder joint or loose connection, but for now, it just sits here looking pretty.
I know that rejuvenation has been known to bring back color but it sounds like a job for a tech. Good luck. I was able to find a tech to help me with difficult stuff. It took me awhile to find one. Good luck.
Def. sounds like a break in the blue color gun circuit. reflowing the traces and components all the way from the chassis board to the neckboard and re-seating any connectors in the circuit could help.
@@greasebob Came back here to tell y'all that the TV has been fixed and is once again beloved and used plenty. And it was a bad solder joint/connection, according to the guy that fixed it.
@@hellbillymods45I am very late, but big congratulations on saving up that CRT successfully! I am not knowledgeable enough to tinker with the innards of a CRT myself, but someday I would love to learn the hands-on basics. In a perfect world, I would gather up as many CRTs around me, service them up as needed, then let them go for free or around $15-40-ish, depending.
sony vega kv-30hs420 got one of these for free last year to use for emulation with a old pc i have laying around
If you come across an XBR960 do NOT run away. Amazing HD CRT for PS3/Xbox 360.
I agree. I was being hyperbolic right there. Hd crts definitely have there. Place. I would like to spend more time with them.
Just got the same model but 34' inch
sure it's not 32 inch? never heard of a 34
What is the matter with the KV-36XBR400 and the HD inputs? Can’t it still output retro consoles with Scanlines?
It can not. It also has bad input lag. It shouldn't be used for 240p content imo.
@@riggel8804 it actually can! and exceptionally well i might add, if you go into the service menu of most hd wega's you can enable HDPT (High Definition Pass Through) if that is enabled you will get legless gameplay as long as you are running a res of 1080i or 540p, add interger scaled scan lines in with retroarch and its truly a thing of beauty
@@Hamel7777 Did this with a PS2 outputting 1080i via OPL and GSM, everything looked gorgeous!
Why does everybody say that the Pro Mode is the best mode? Im playing on a 20 inch Wega model and I find that Vivid mode makes some games look better, such as the 2D Neo Geo and Capcom games.
Each set is different and some if it is a matter of taste but if I had to pick one setting for everybody it would be the pro mode. My son likes the vivid setting too but I can't stand it. It does some weird edge enhancement and makes the image look oddly sharp.
@@riggel8804 Dang I'm playing Tekken 3 on the KVfs130 model and I see what you're talking about. Standard doesn't stretch the image no where near as much as Vidid mode but there is a slight straight stretch, maybe like a point or two below Vivid. Pro doesn't do that at all. I guess I'm addicted to bright oversaturated stuff but Pro really does look better.
There's a Sony Trinitron KD-34XBR2 HD crt listed near me for 150, do you think that's worth it? I don't see any indication that model has the super fine pitch tube. It is an HD crt but there's no indication of what the tube is. Also no hdmi, it only has component. But looks to be in excellent condition.
After doing some research it is not a super fine pitch tube but instead a hi-scan tube
@@huge_balls That is an hd tube. I would stay away from it. It will upscale all 240p content to 480i and have terrible input lag. I had one once and hated it. Movies on it looked more like an lcd screnn. It upscales movies to something like 480p
@@riggel8804 ah okay, yeah I hear mixed things about hd crts but some people really love them. i have plasmas for my hd content. Otherwise I do mostly gamecube, wii, n64 type stuff so thats 480. No idea. Good luck. I've never seen a Samsung.
How do you connect the pc to the tv?
It's a pain in the ass. The crux of the biscuit is crtemudriver. Check out my other video titled bvm vs pvm vs blablabla. It's got them links... I drunk.
The simplest way is S-video. Many older 3D cards have this.
Really you think Movie mode is best? I basically have the same tv, the KV-36XBR250, and Movie mode makes the picture look blurry.
Yes. the movie mode is not as sharp. However the other modes add an edge enhancement feature that looks bad imo. You can try turning the sharpness up all the way in movie or if you just don't like movie mode than I would recommend standard mode.
@@riggel8804 I just bought the tv actually. It's my second CRT, my first being an AV-36D503. This time I bought the Digital Video Essentials by Joe Cane DVD. Do you use that too? I've never calibrated a tv so hopefully I picked the right product.
@@strictlynineties Damn dude. You don't fuck around. My first crt was a piece of shit. I've got a couple d series. They are something special for 240p gaming but they suck for everything else.
Calibrating crts can be a deep dive. You can use the smpte color bars pattern to calibrate the color and brightness with that dvd you bought. I have a video guide on it. The problem is that most of these crts have bad white balance cause they super old. You can buy calibration tools to get the white balance improved. They cost like 100 bucks and are not easy to use. The xbr can be adjusted to improve white ballance on an old ass crt that has gone out of wack by setting the trinitone video mode to medium and the color correct to on. use a white screen and try and see which mode gets it whiter. You can set the trinitone to high if it is really bad but if the tv is not that bad than the trinitone setting to high will make your tv look blueish. I would suggest starting with my vid. Geometry calibration is whole other can of worms and you will need a grid pattern for that.
@@riggel8804 PS2 on a D-Series looks amazing imo. It's a 480i source displayed on a 480i screen. But yeah I'm happy to finally grab a Sony! So that DVD doesn't have smpte test pattern? Is that the same thing as 240 Suite? Also, I was wondering why you didn't have Trinitone set to high. And yes, setting this to high does give blueish tint to whites such as snow and clouds on my screen but I have a hard time turning off. I read that High was meant for the "wow" factor for customers when entered the stores. Medium is probably the way to go overall though.
@@strictlynineties if you think the ps2 480i looks good on the D you are going to be blown away when you see it in the xbr. I probably was a little too hard on the D. It doesn't suck for 480i but it's not in the same league as a Sony with component. 240p test suite is a calibration tool that you can load off old video game systems like a snes. All you need to get started is an smpte color bar pattern for color and brightness calibration and a grid pattern for geometry calibration. They are both on 240p test suite and are probably on your dvd you ordered.
This vs the Wega KV-36FS120?
I already have a 36fs120. There's one of these for $25 online right now. Just wanted to know if it was worth swapping.
I don't know how you move those 36" screens around. 32" is my limit.
I use a rolling cart and make sure to always move it on and off furniture. You don't want to lift it off the ground. It's not bad once you got a program. The real problem is servicing them because you can't see the adjustments your making from the back of the tube.
@@riggel8804 I see. I just got a kv32fs320. The buttons are acting weird and a remote won't work. I'm guessing there's a bad solder joint somewhere. It's a shame because I really like the set. I'm not able to do adjustments on it

Retro 240p games look best on a curved slot mask tube. Sony Trinitron tubes were never great for gaming but their late model Wega line are among the worst. Those jaggies they produce are not meant to be there. They're an artifact. Even the PVM and BVM line is nowhere near as good as the Ikegami curved shadow mask broadcast monitors.
You can turn off the vm edge enhancement on most flat screen Sony's or you can select a video mode that does not have it enabled. Check out my 27fs12 vs 36fs15 video for more info.

someone is giving away a kv-32xbr450...is it worth getting?
I had one of those. I took it to the dump. It's going to upscale 240p to 480i. So no scanlines. It's also going to have a lot of input lag. It's okay for 480p content but even with that there are better tvs. Xbr250 is the last standard def xbr. All the higher numbers are bad for 240p games
