  • If you're in the hobby of retro gaming, then you're well aware of the love that retro gamers have for CRT Televisions (ya know, the big ol' tube tvs!). However, one of the biggest issues people have with bringing one into their home is finding a place to put it where it fits... and is acceptable for everyone else living in your home. In this video, I cover all the considerations that you'll want to make for putting a CRT TV in your home to play retro video games on.

      I personally feel that ANY console made before the PS3 should be played on a CRT. I've seen what the results are when not; and more often than not; can be quite ugly and( rather disheartening) to say the least.

    First off, just want to say that you have become my favorite channel, Retro Bird. You have top quality content among us retro gamers, knowing how to pace your dialogue, and keeping things interesting with the right touch of humor. Also. I was almost disappointed that you hadn’t brought up nanners, but you didn’t disappoint! One more note, is as much as I love the image from CRTs with retro games, I can’t stand the squeal they give off after years of adapting to flat panels. I had one 2016-18 and could never shake the sound even after two years.

    • @RetroBirdGaming

      Oh yeah, that 15KHz refresh sound. I'm not sure if I hate it or love it. There's the nostalgia but I also imagine it's what tinnitus sounds like. XD

    • @mottzilla4858
      @mottzilla4858 2 года назад +1

      @@dreadpirateroberts7269 Sometimes the noise can be reduced or eliminated by reseating the anode cap on the CRT or adding fresh dielectric grease underneath the cap. Other times the noise might be coming from the flyback transformer inside. There are some tricks that might help with that as well. But if you've always heard a noise with every single 15khz CRT without exception then it's your amazing hearing that is the problem. I have only ever hear noise from CRTs that were old and not maintained. I remember a PC CRT monitor that definitely had an annoying high pitch whine. I have a feeling now that it was probably repairable.

      @dreadpirateroberts7269 2 года назад

      @@mottzilla4858 Nice! I’ll definitely have to order up some stuff up and see if that’s a remedy. I wasn’t trying to be all high and mighty about my hearing. It honestly sucks lol, but I have always heard the sound even as a child but that was just normal then. It didn’t start to irritate me until I hadn’t had a tube tv from about 2010-2014ish. That gap in time made me realize how annoying that squeal was that wasn’t present with flat screens.

    When I had CRTs, I would always make it a point to buy multi device switch boxes for them to essentially put the hookup jacks in a conveniently accessible place, so as to not have to go back there to switch consoles, but also to have multiple consoles hooked up. I still find the switch boxes useful today for modern TVs that skimp on number of inputs on them.

Crt TV is on a 4 slot cube with SNES n64 PS2 and Xbox in three spots the PS2 sits on top of the Xbox. The 4th slot has my 9in symphonic crt VHS player. If i was to do a tour it be me standing doing a 360 and last like 10 mins. Only got like 150+ games and 50+ of em are 64 games in pull out drawers made for them. Its very minimal and crampt but keeps my hobby active. My clothes even hang in there. I feel like a kid sometimes playing in there but it's my chaos that calms me lol. I don't play modern games my PS3 is in a box and that's as new as I'll go. Just dreaming of the day (when the kids move out in 20 years they still baby's) I'll have a little room to display all of my media collection.

      Another idea is to get good quality cables for all the inputs on the back and then put couplers on the ends so you basically have extension cables. Then you can put those anywhere you want. My large TV is on a stand with big locking caster wheels so moving it wouldn't be difficult, but I found it was much more convenient to run cables with couplers on the ends so I can plug whatever I need to into it without getting at the back.

    I once drove an hour for a Panasonic 27" CRT. We tested that it worked and when I was going to move it to my car, my strenght weared out and I dropped it a few cm above the pavement...
    I got it transported back to my apartment and had to wait for a friend to come by to help me getting up on the 10th floor. We cleaned it and hooked it up. The moment had arrived to hook up some consoles and to my horror, the TV booted and quickly turned gray on the screen and shut down. It was dead.
    Now I have a fantastic Trinitron from Sony instead and I am more than happy with that as well.

    I have many CRTs. 3 in my bedroom. I have developed some tricks over the years. If you are going to have multiple CRTs, it's a good idea to get a rolling cart to place them on while moving around. This way you don't have to pick them up off the ground which is the hardest part. You can place a towel or blanket under them when storing or transporting so you can slide them instead of picking them up.
    I have multiple CRT reviews on my channel. I have a review on the kv-27fs120 which is basically the same CRT in this video. I also have a review discussing what size CRT is right for you. If size is an issue I would recommend getting a consumer grade 20 inch CRT. They are light and do not take up much space. Personally, I find 40 inch CRTs to be the "sweet spot". I Can lay across the room in my bed and a 40 incher still looks good.

    I really love to own a big CRT tv but space is the main issue. I now own a 14 inch Philips tv. The thing I really love about them is they have a sturdy handle on top, so you can move it easily around. If I want to play them big I hook up my Mega Retron to the big screen. Only downer is that for lightgun games, a 14 inch tv is rather small but it brings back memories when I got just the tv in my teenage bedroom. So I call it retro!

    For my bachelor party I got an Atari stand with a CRT inside of it. They even asked my wife if she was okay with it. She thought it was about a meter tall so she said "Yes he would love it". Then it turned out it was 2 meters tall :P Her enthusiasm went down quickly but she couldn't back out anymore ^^. It's standing in a corner of the room as a display piece and of course fully hooked up with most of my retro SCART consoles. Family and friends who visit mostly ask "How? Why? Does it work?" and I love it as do they when they play light gun games on it ^^

    People online make this out to be SUCH a big deal for some reason, like they all live in frigging breadboxes or something. Almost every household found room for at least one CRT for decades, so it obviously can't be that hard.

      I think part of the real problem is a spot best suited for a television is likely already occupied by another tv. I'm no interior designer but tvs tend to crowd the space and require clearance for viewing/use.

      12-14"" televisions are great for retro games and easy to deal with but I think it's the large living room units that people lust after. Those really need a living room sized space to use comfortably and make the most out of. That's out of reach for many of us, unfortunately.

    When I moved to P.E.I at the beginning of 2018, one of the first things I bought (even before getting my house) was a 32" Sony Trinitron that came with the matching glass door Sony display stand off of Craigslist for $40. I moved out here before my wife and kids to start work and get things set up, so I brought my SNES and some games with me but had no TV to play on at the AIrBnB I was staying at for the month and a half before my house closing (older lady's place, didn't have a tv) so this Trinitron was my solution. I'd been wanting to get a CRT again for years, so it was the perfect tv to me at a steal of a price. When I told my wife, she was stoked about the deal and 100% on board; it's had a prominent place in the game room since.

    Hey Retro Bird... I saw this video a few weeks ago, and I happened to come across a very good condition 26" Panasonic flat screen CRT for $20 hard to believe my luck. The thing weighs 105 lbs, and I struggled to get it into my small car, almost breaking my back in the process.
    All the way home I had the Retro Bird theme song going on in my head, then got home, plugged in the N64... and man, best experience ever - apart from lugging it around.
    Man I forgot how heavy TVs were in the the day. The whole retro thing is awesome, and the CRT TV has it's own mojo appeal as well.
