Not even a retro gamer but I hated getting the 3rd party N64 controller
I had a third party N64 controller that, for whatever reason, allowed me to move an turn faster in GoldenEye. Believe me I never let anyone else use it.
rsreston i remembered that also, and as a kid i was always getting the best controller and always first to play :) when i was at my friend who had nes i was best at super mario bros, battletoads, megaman and castlevania, at friend with genesis i was best at sonic, last battle, shadow dancer, with playstation i was best at tekken 2, 3, parasite eve, dead or alive, etc and yeah there was always someone that was worst at games and getting to play with crappy controller 🤣 that was awesome times....not to mention playing on real arcade machines
The 90's kids went through this one; renting video games at Blockbuster hoping that nobody else rented the same game (with battery save) before you were able to beat it, hoping your save was still on the cartridge when you rented it again.
Dragon Warrior II for me. Until I got my own copy that is. I think the third time I rented it my save had been erased.
Used to piss me off and there really is no worse feeling than when your parents let you rent a game again so you go to the local movie rental store and the only copy of a game was gone fuck i can't tell you how many times it happened with Donley kong 64 that shit pissed me off
Never had a blockbuster in my town but we had a store called the video den and i rented games there from the 90s until around 2007 or so they closed down
Or if you rent it again and you get a different copy (If they had multiple copies)

Something about the arcades was you might get a rival that eventually became a friend. Then you both get pizza and discuss a game only to find the guy lives a couple blocks away. That happened to me a couple of times.

Slightly before my time as I never had this happen but that's awesome! Arcades always seemed lonely in my experience. This is mid to late 90s. I'd guess that's around the time they started disappearing or I just went to crap arcades. Lol
Now I think that passwords with obscure symbols or with "O" and "0" it was some kind of early trolling

It still amazes me that the Hadouken in Mega Man X sounds just like something your friend would tell you he learned from his uncle who works at Nintendo, but it was actually real.
Pre internet gaming was so much different than gaming during the internet era. You touched upon having to use gaming magazines for tips, tricks, and codes. But another way many kids figured out how to navigate games was by going out into the neighborhood and having conversations with other kids. I distinctly remember learning about the 4-2 warp area in Super Mario Bros because of a kid named Jimmy down the street. I literally invited him into my house (without even really knowing him) so that I could let him play my NES and show me the warp zone. We ended up being friends for years.
You're absolutely right. Word of mouth was huge, not just for how to beat games but gaming news in general (and of course those pesky rumors I mentioned!)
@@RetroBirdGaming Yes, you are right. Video game rumors were very much a school yard/neighborhood thing prior to mainstream internet usage. I fell for a few rumors back in the day: The iguana being an unlockable character in NBA Jam, unlocking Shaq in NBA Jam, too many to mention Mortal Kombat 1 & 2 rumors, and the most enticing of them all - there was a code that put Lara Croft in less/no clothing.
There was a kid named Jimmy in every neighborhood who know a code or a trick or knew how to beat a hard boss.
Having to start back at the beginning when you die.
Gaming magazines/strategy guides where the only way to help when you were stuck.
Definitely! Not being able to look up help online is a big difference.
When you said "up up up down down down..." I um.. noticed. I guess that code really is burned into me.

@@RetroBirdGaming As a modern gamer I disagree with things you think are "better" than things today but I'll give you that one waiting for a game to download is annoying.
That’s only if you buy digital (of course), or buy from companies like Ubisoft. I don’t think I’ve ever had a physical game that didn’t contain the game, the download was just for bug fixes and free extra content.
@@nintendoboy3605 lemme hit u with a truth bomb that u might not understand till your older... these games your playing now (I'm assuming your a young person) are the games your growing up with... in 15-20 years time games will be way beyond what we can imagine but you will still have a place in your heart for the ones u grew up with.. in saying that I can also see where your coming from because you don't have the nostalgia of the older crowd when it comes to pixilated 2d graphics that look like garbage compared to today's graphics but this again is where we part ways because imo graphics don't make a good game like take ff7 original ps1 looks like shit, but is one of the best games of all time, honestly I see where your coming from too but I'm also guessing you're not the one paying for the DLC for every little skin and gun camo or dance move or maps or pay to win weapons or extra characters.... I could go on and on about DLC but in the end it all boils down to opinion mines not better than yours, and yours is just as important as anyone's and in the end we're all gamers and we've all banged everyone mom lol take care and take this it's dangerous to go alone 🎮
Man I miss gaming magazines. Of all the things lost due to the internet, this one hurts the most. I miss taking the mag to school and me and my friends pouring over all of the screenshots and getting hyped as hell for the games.

5:08 Allow me to play devil's advocate here. Although retro games were more difficult, they're much easier to pick up & start playing, whereas modern games tend to be bogged down with tutorials, cutscenes, and convoluted menus/systems, requiring a significant time investment just to get rolling. And that should be considered a whole new form of masochism that likewise challenge players' patience & dedication.
Hahah. That's in line with some of the things I've talked about before. You're right. For some people, sitting through long introductions and tutorials might as well be torture.
X men 2 on the genesis comes to mind no title screen NOTHING just BAM straight to the gameplay you don't even get to pick a character it randomly picks one for you for the 1st stage

I hate cutscenes, it makes me want to care about the game I purchased. Like, I have to plot out a time slot for a game. One reason I am enjoying my Series X is I can hop right back into where I was playing a few days ago. My car is still sitting on the test track in Forza 7. lol
I hadn't thought of that before, but that is actually huge. That'd be the sole reason I'd ever use Quick Resume. I always felt it was a huge joke whenever they'd demonstrate the feature, jumping between games on the fly. No, I don't juggle between 5 - 6 games, like ever, especially when they require such an ordeal just to get going. But stopping in the middle of something and Quick Resuming later, like opening a DS from sleep mode, that is a real practical benefit right there!
Gonna need that Mr. Nutz cheat code. One time, I called a game store asking them for Mr. Nutz and they thought it was a prank call. 🤣

I love my CRT and refuse to play my consoles on anything else; aside from ps3 or newer.
@@nickparsons337 I agree. My sony CRT has component inputs so I have a 360 and a ps3 with HD retrovision cables hooked up to it.
@@onetwo6039 Nice. My Sanyo CRT is so old I have to use the inputs on my Sony VCR; ( yeah, I said VCR lol) just to be able to play games on it. But damn that tv is a champion.
the one i miss the most is playing with 4-8 people in one room. hell even just 2.
I fondly remember playing Halo on Xbox and Mario Kart Double Dash on GCN using local LAN play. Screaming at each other in the same room and different rooms in the same house. It was such good times.
Always looked forward to every month of EGM and Game Pro! Still have a big stack of early 90s game mags.
Nice. All I ever really had was Nintendo Power, but I would always love looking at the other ones when I got the chance.

Bringing your own controller to a friends house along with a game and/or memory card... then sleeping on your friends floor with half a cheeto to cover up with ahh the good ol days
Madcatz controllers were a thing back in the day. Versus Books game guides and Brady Books guides were also cool. Those were the best days.
You can't make this stuff up, only someone who actually lived through some of these situations can talk about it. Very well done and i absolutely relate to many of these! I left my nes on alot while i was at school.. came home more then once to see my game was turned off while i was gone. Sadness in its purest form

Yeah, some of these things retro gamers have picked up on who got into it later. But Console Collector is right.. there's just a certain understanding us older gamers have since we lived through it :)

Reading the manuals in anticipation on the ride home from Blockbuster.
It's crazy to think how quickly things developed -- it sure didn't feel that fast at the time!
I honestly laughed at the dig on retro gamers having more patience. For the most part, it honestly seems to be true.
Especially in the UK where the NES/Master System weren't quite as popular and many kids had 8-bit computers where the games would take up to ten minutes or so to load from audio cassette!
Lol, I remember playing the pyramid level on SM64 back in the day and my brother telling me "Press Z and A and you'll get 1000 lives" when the cylindrical Grindel was getting close to me. I fully believed it even though it never worked XD

5:00 "Manuals were crucial" Oh gosh you're telling me. I got really frustrated with a used copy of DuckTales while playing it for months before I finally heard through a friend that there was something called a "pogo jump". That unlocked a lot more of the game for me. (It's absolutely necessary as it's the main way to defeat enemies and the only way to defeat bosses and make tricky jumps.)
0:18 THIS!!! THIS!!!! Contra was especially bad for dropping power ups behind things you couldn't pass through lol,.. so frustrating when just starting or in later levels.
This was great. One of my memories as our family moved on to the PS1, we didn't know memory cards were essential so the first games I owned were Crash bandicoot (password) Castlevania SotN, and Resident Evil 2.
This resulting at me getting through RE1 in one sitting without dying eventually and leaving it on, same with SotN (bad ending). Of course eventually we got a memory card and life became much easier with the hours necessary to complete them ballooned.
A few more things that come to mind:
- buying a game just because of the nice artwork on the box and the screenshots on the back: Wow, Fortress of Fear looks super cool and exciting, that will surely be mega fun :(
- take your N64 well protected with laundry in a sports bag with 4 controllers and Mario Kart, Goldeneye and Mario Party to a sleepover with friends and play until dawn
- go to bed while Sim City is running so you can spend more money the next day (only works if Bowser doesn't blow up the whole city while you sleep)
- protecting last generation CRTs like a Sony Trinitron as if they were made out of pure gold (convincing your mother that it is really important that 3 of them must be in her dry attic as a backup)
I get it, I was born on the 90s so I'll never let go of my n64, so I see people growing up in the 90s wouldn't let go of their snes/nes/ everything else

We used to put our NES games in the freezer for 20 minutes. Worked like a charm.
That Ristar gameplay feels so great to me. Part of my childhood was playing Ristar and not getting very far in it but having tons of fun anyway. The Sega Genesis Classic collection is so good.

Great video! I love the part about "rumors". When I was in 4th grade, Super Mario Bros 3 was the newest Mario game. Someone told me that in Japan, they were already up to Super Mario Bros 8... Where you have to deliver a pizza to the princess!

This may have been posted in a comment already, but once CD-based consoles became the norm, demo discs were a big thing for me and my brother. Whether you got them in gaming magazines, or as promo items at your local game stores, these were always a fantastic resource that could inspire you to get that next great game for your collection! I discovered so many of my favorite games through demo discs. I just loved playing demos for new games and getting a feel for the story and gameplay, or watching exciting trailers for upcoming games that really got you curious about what that game was about! I still have all my original Xbox demo CDs that came with my issues of Xbox Magazine, and my brother recently gave me his collection of the "Generator" series of demo discs for the Dreamcast. There are a few old demo discs for the PS1 that I'm itching to add to the collection next. Alas, by the 7th console generation, demo discs pretty much went the way of the dodo bird thanks to online gaming allowing players to download demos and game trailers directly onto their consoles.

The arcades were really amazing at that time. Now it's all tickets. Luckily, there is one modern car game I like which saves your car which is Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune.
Surprised "water levels" wasn't mentioned. The one in the first Sonic the Hedgehog and the dam in Ninja Turtles could be so frustrating.
Nothing breaks up the monotony of a really fun game like a crappy water level.

Retro gamers will understand needing to buy an accessory for 4 player multiplayer. I also find it sad all multiplayer is online now. Couch co-op is far better.

I miss seeing 2d sprites instead of all 3d games. That's why I have metal slug anthology on ps4 and windjammers on nintendo switch and a ton of 2d games for saturn
I used to go into the grocery store with mom carrying a small notepad and pen and I'd write down the cheat codes I needed from the back of the EMG and Gamepro magazines.
The EGM gaming magazines were the best. I was just as entertained fantasising about getting a game or a system like Neo Geo I never got just as much as I was when I got an actual game. Wow! The good old days.

Yes I'm extending the 16-bit and 32-bit era in my garage. CRTs, av cables, lots of carts , SNES, Genesis, Saturn, PSX controllers etc that's all I need!

never thought of it that way . the dreamcast was the last console to release in the 90's. man i miss my dreamcast (died in an electric storm in 2007) , and i miss my nintendo 64 (stolen in 2001). fortunately i still have my SNES and NES both work flawlessly still. my OG Xbox , stopped reading disc and both xbox 360's i bought red ringed on me. started playing pc games in the late 90's and have stuck to PC mostly though. just reccently bought a switch for those classic franchises i missed (mario, donkey kong and zelda games). wish i still had an old atari ... it burned up in a house fire back in 1993 when i was 13
Big specialty arcade cabnets. Truck or car driving. A train pump card, hang glider, jet ski, surfboard. It was way more fun than a crummy motion controller.

Leaving the console on in my house was a big no-no. We were staying at my cousins' place one time and he was playing my NES. We left for school, and when we came back I ran to the basement to play some Mario 3. When I got to my system, I found it was left on and quite literally smoking. Obviously I turned it off, and a couple hours later tried to turn it back on, only to find out it unresponsive. I tried the system again a couple weeks later in the vain hopes it would work, and to my shock it did! Still going to this day. However, never again were any of my consoles left on for any extreme length of time, at least not without me present.
My friend made a band on college called the Konami mode where they played epic progressive metal covers of video game themes using the actual 8-16 bit sounds on keyboard. I still have them all on my computer and multiple backups discs😊
Also retro gamers understand that movie tie in games actually can be a good thing when done right.
Lion King on SNES is so good for example. Or NES Ducktales
Moisture on the pins definitely did help though. It made it more conducive for the electrical current on an otherwise dirty or marred surface.
Now, over enough time, this would begin to corrode the copper on your pins. But sometimes you just wanted it to work then and there, lol
Gameboy/old school references:
1. Trying to find a gazillion batteries to operate the thing.
2. Trying to beat your game quickly; BEFORE it completely dies because of NO charger yet.
3. Faking being sick from school to PLAY said games(This isn't just exclusive to Gameboy however.)
4. When your parents tell you to " go outside and get fresh air" you bring your Gameboy with you to continue your game.
5. Your told to go outside and make friends; so you share your games with other neighborhood kids in the hopes of making a friend or two.
6. ALWAYS looking for a Player 2; NO online play yet kiddies. 😉🕹
I doubt many newer gamers would understand the joy of finally having a Blockbuster Video open up within driving distance with a large selection of NES games to rent instead of the maybe two dozen random games the neighborhood mom and pop video stores would have if you were lucky. I think we all found some hidden gems just because there were so few games in certain video stores that you eventually ended up trying all of them.
Ahh.. screen peaking.. I still remember how I yelled at my friend while playing Target (one of the first polish FPS) while doing same and acting like I never knew where he was. We used books.
I’m not a retro gamer and I made sure my laptop was on the whole weekend because I would spend entire days on Big the Cat’s levels not realising I needed to press down to hook
I play both modern and retro games these days. I love new games on Switch, PS and my Series S but I'll also always have time for the classics or to discover a new classic.
I think the mystic over secrets was something I appreciated a lot back then. These days, popular games may have tenfold the number of secrets which are much better hidden… yet, they’re uncovered and widespread knowledge in only a couple weeks of the games release. :(
Something else I miss is that people were more willing to _accept_ a game was difficult and gitgud since it was more the norm. These days your average gamer boots up a modern game and screams bullshit at the first sign of resistance, whether or not the game is fair (usually it is, but they’re so complacent with modern games it breaks their mind when one is actually hard).

Renting games and demo discs/cartridges was a lot bigger deal back then
The aesthetics and quirks of retro games are what keeps me coming back to them, personally I prefer the password system to a save battery cause you don't have to worry about putting the cartridge in only to find your game has erased itself haha.
Oh how I miss urban legends. Funny that you mentioned the Mega Man X hadoken. I actually played through the whole game earlier today for my Retro Video Game Club I hosted tonight, Mega Man was the retro game of the month of December. We talked about the hadoken and was quite proud of busting up Vile with it earlier. I actually made up a Super Metroid myth code that I told to a friend in 7th grade gym class, who oddly enough had the last name of Ridley. Told him to get to the vertical hallway right before Mother Brain's chamber and unleash all of his missiles and bombs in a specific order. If you did it correctly and quick enough, it opened up another planet to explore with a rematch with Ridley. Everytime we had gym class he would complain that the code didn't work, so I'd tell him that he did it wrong and change up the number of ammo and order to unload it in. I told him sometime in highschool that it was just a joke, and we had a good laugh about it. Four years later, he signed my senior year book saying that he was "still trying to get the Metroid code to work", thus immortalizing the existence of the code for alltime.
Hahah you really strung him along. I feel like I remember getting screwed in a similar way by some of the Pokemon game rumors back then.

Growing up I got the impression that NES games were a lot longer but save features and passwords were standard. Nope! Definitely an aspect of retro gaming I don't envy, along with limited continues.
Funny enough, quite a few NES games had unlimited continues.
Couch Co-Op and couch VS, two of the most missed features from Retro Games and Arcade games! Nowadays you can play online with friends and strangers, but the human factor is what I miss the most: bragging over a microphone is just not the same...
I've been around gaming/collecting since the Atari days of lore... With the golden arcade 80's, you would literally place your quarter on the machine just to get the next turn... Yup, I was there!!! And along comes the NES... 1985!!! Oh boy, where do I start. The black box series gave us new hope for better days to come. And Super Mario Brothers plus many others, delivered!!! To make a long story short, without video gaming, I would be either locked up in a sanitarium, in prison, or worst yet, in a Ghost & Goblins graveyard... Video gaming saved my life!!!
Placing your quarter to indicate you had the next game is something I never saw first hand, but I've heard SO many people say they have that I accept it as a thing that happened!
I got a high score in THPS 1 that was so ridiculously high it took about 10 hours just to countdown the number so I could press 'x' to proceed. There was no skip button.
I think I even have the replay.
Anyone else remember the rumors of the NUDEALITY in Mortal Kombat?
Also, as a kid, my cousin bought me a 3rd party SNES controller for my birthday. Looking up pictures online, it appears it was called the SN ProPad. It had a clear plastic case and turbo switches for all of the face buttons (off, semi auto, full auto). I preferred it over my legit SNES controllers. Of course, if I held it in my hands as an adult, maybe I'd think it felt like a piece of junk. But back then, I felt like a king. And you had better believe when I had friends over, I was NOT letting them use that bad boy.
Mannnnn… calling the Nintendo Power Hotline on my grandparents’ rotary phone and racking up those bills. They were saints. Haha
Remember when there were no microtransactions and games actually rewarded you for being skillful at them by unlocking new content as opposed to making you pay for it on top of the $60 you already paid for the game itself? Ah, good times
Marvel VS. Capcom 2 in order to unlock all 56 characters all you had to do was play the game and save up points from winning fights. Same with skins and stages.

Gosh I've said it once and I'll say it again its very funny watching you act out what your talking about and it makes it even more entertaining knowing and understanding the things retro gamers went through ( blowing really hard into the cart had me laughing 😄👍). Another thing and this started with 2600 for me and my late dad was writing down high scores (River Raid). That mixes with great memories. 😊👍

True words spoken there brother! Btw the arcades was the place where champions were born, the magic place where all technology in the world could be bought for a coin. Same system multiplayer, LAN parties, arcades... oh man those days when gaming was an actually social hobby. I say retro gaming is ultimate gaming. There are a few decent new games nowadays but during the 16-bit era the industry was popping out great games like crazy. Playing those games now is still fun. All of us who lived that times we had a great childhood.
the arcade was the ''online multiplayers'' of retro gamers. For example, Today you play Street Fighter 5 against ramdom peoples online. Back then you played Street fighter 2 in arcade with peoples you met in person.
I used to print out hints and cheat codes for games like Star Fox or Gradius back then. Those were like my childhood important documents, lol.
Oh yeah I understand, I remember when you could buy a game and you had a full game, nothing to upgrade or download, the good old days. I remember when you would have to rent a game before buying it, no RUclips or internet to check if it was good, plying games with friends in the same room, couch, and going to a arcade

I’m 13 and I started getting into retro gaming this year I bought a genesis a GBA a Fight stick I have some n64 and nes games and one famaicom game and super Mario world and a ps1 I think it’s going to be fun

I keep couch co-op alive in my house. I was born in 91 and my 1st system was the n64 on that note arcades in the 90s was big for me cuz there was no street F on n64 for me. So street F 3rd was big quarter muncher for as was house of the dead, area 51, galaga, and DDR

I'm only a couple years older than you and I feel ya on the couch co-op. SNES was my first system and Turtles in Time was always one of my favs to play with my brother.
House of the Dead and The Simpsons Arcade were my jams for Arcade games back in the day. Damn I miss arcades

also at 8:28, that is the deakbreaker for me for modern games, i have a ps4 and 15 games ,and when 4 of my friends came to my house and decided to play some modern games and we were all like "what..are there no local mulitplayer games in your library?"

Ah the memories! I used to play the games all the way through or take turns with friends until we beat it, but I never kept the system on when I wasn't playing. I come from a family that didnt have a lot of money to spare and the idea of leaving on a system for hours made me think it would burn out or something and who knew if I would be able to replace it. Who knows, that could be one of the reasons all my old consoles still work.
I lucked out back in the day. As a daycare I went to usually had a couple of arcades set to free play. Along with a pool table and a full size indoor basketball court, etc. So you could play the arcades all day instead of for two minutes while at the store because you only had two quarters. My favorite was when they had Gauntlet. As you had all the time in the world to try and find all the secret exits, etc.
Having a big physical collection is unfortunately turning into a retro thing. Young modern gamers just download their games now. It’s not the same.
Not the same, but convenient. Let's also just be happy that some "kids" can experience retro games through the, for example, Nintendo Switch VC. But I agree with you.
@retro game fan 1 Yeah, I was like that for a long time too but for me playing on original hardware is half the fun. Im finally to the point in my life where having a collection worth a couple thousand isn't a big deal.
Soldering in batteries seems more intimidating than it is. I guarantee you've done more difficult things. I thought it seemed gnarly when I first learned, but it turned out to be way easier than I thought.
I agree that people playing by whatever means necessary is better than not at all. I worry about younger generations disregarding retro games.

I loved all the false info made by kids it was awesome imagining and trying all that stuff haha!! And hey a lot of it turned out to be real too! Those days are sadly all gone. Gaming did have a more thrilling and magical feeling back then.

I never left my 8 or even 16 bit consoles on to come back to them for THAT long. I would've been scared that it would've burned out. Still am....
I love the comparison for beating Retro vs Modern games. This is one of my main issues with modern games. I'll gladly put 100+ hours into a game, but I don't want to have that be a requirement for finishing the game. It's the reason I've put 100+ hours into replays of DKC alone despite beating it in just over 2 hours in most occasions.
There's a certain perspective on retro games that only people who grew up with them are able to fully appreciate - namely, how amazing and innovative they were at the time. New gamers may be able to intellectually acknowledge how good they were for their day & age, but there's something unique about having seen those games roll out when they were literally the best games in existence! It's an appreciation that never really goes away; decades later, I still find myself in awe of games like Metal Gear Solid on PS1 (even though I've played plenty of games since that look better, play better, and have even more depth) simply because of how it blew me away when it first came out. Heck, I still remember the first time I saw someone play Super Mario Brothers on the NES, and how incredible it was compared to the Atari games I'd been playing up to that point!

I remember when there were cheat codes instead of real dollars for in game currency to get ahead. Ubisoft is the worst offender.

Having to do something during games that you can't pause. Certain 1970's games like Video Olympics.
passwords were that complex because it would verify where you were, key items collected and other stuff depeding on the game.. im sure he knew that
From the eyes of a child of the era, though, that is how we perceived them. We weren't programmers yet back then, and since some games had shorter passwords than others, we thought "why does this game use 25 digits when that game only needs 6?" We didn't know any better. XD
I remember Swords & Serpents for the NES. It was kind of a dungeon crawl RPG type of game. You had a password for each of your 4 characters and a 5th password for your game progress. And it's almost certain you write down one of them wrong.

I had to leave my ps2 on back in the day because I didn’t have a memory card to I couldn’t save and luckily my parents never turned the system off, honestly I wish more games had local co op i remember having fun with ps2 games with co op

I still don't understand why local co-op basically vanished from modern gaming. Why wouldn't you wanna play with your buds right next to you where you can give each other shit in a more natural way lol
Speaking of the PS2, getting a multi-tap and popping in Gauntlet: Dark Legacy are still some of my best gaming memories. Good times...

Forgot mention one thing. Renting games from Blockbuster. Your parents would take you to there on a Friday and you’d have the game for the weekend.

I dunno bout block buster but my local game rental place you could only rent for one night unless you payed extra but they were closed on sundays so if ya rent on Saturday you got it till Monday and you could play it for about an hour after school before it was time to take it back
8:46 The irony! My friends actually hated that I had that controller when we played Unreal Tournament or Quake 3 lol! I could bind jump to one of the buttons instead of having it on the D-pad!
