I just picked mine up yesterday. Thank you for telling me to get this.
You nailed it about the sound, clear picture, and the remote quality.
The TV repair shop I bought this from took apart the remote, and it appears that their internals can corrode. Fortunately, mine was repairable.
Craigslist be damned! You can still find these in the wild!

even through the video picture looks beatiful, love the contrast and colors! i wish i could get a trinitron in good conditions but haven´t been lucky. for now im playing in a Samsung tantus HD ready 32 inches crt, but it works good only with xbox, game cube, wii, ps2 games

Looks great even with the corner convergence issues. My set has similar misconvergence.
Did you ever end up fixing it? I tried convergence strips and adjusting the yoke. It helped a little but it's still not perfect. I'm happy with it though, it was free.

6:04 I had a Sony Trinitron with negligible overscan issues, but I was curious to go into the service menu and try to get it as good as possible. I improved the overscan a bit, but that threw the geometry off. I tried to find a good balance, but eventually changed it back to where it was initially, because the geometry issues were way more distracting!
After adjusting multiple CRTs, I've found that perfect geometry with no overscan on a CRT doesn't really exist. Best case scenario is very good geometry with minimal overscan. Am I wrong? I've only dealt with Sony Trinitrons, a JVC, and various Sylvanias.
I used to agonize over getting the perfect display, but I've finally gotten over it and started enjoying the games.

When it comes to Trinitron KV models, the FS and FV designations and the number that follows…. Is that related to the speakers?

    • @mikegreiling
      @mikegreiling  Год назад

yeah, the differences between them are the number of inputs, the presence or absence of a subwoofer, and the presence or absence of a voltage regulator… the HS models stand for “high scan” and those use digital signal processing, so stay away from them if you plan to use it for retro gaming

Have you ever considered looking for a Sony KV-35XBR48 Trinitron CRT TV? I own one and when it comes to comparing it to a FV310, it's too close to call. I feel like to me that my KV-35XBR48 is better than an FV310 as it was the last American consumer Sony CRT TV to have the jungle IC chip which some say made the picture look better. Also, it is the Only American consumer Sony Trinitron CRT TV to have a curved screen with a component input.

Depends wildly on where you find it. This one was “free” but it was an hour drive away from me. Folks who know what they have will probably charge $100 or so. Most average joes will just throw it out there as a curb side special. Trick is being in the right place at the right time.

Same thing happened to me. I suspected it was related with the blue brightness setting (one time my right eye really hurt while dialing blue color up on the service menu), after that I reset everything to a warmer and less bright setting and I was ok (also set sharpness to 0).

"best" is a matter of opinion but I prefer a curved CRT with a shadow mask for retro gaming. I always thought Trinitrons looked worse for games even as a kid. But, there's one of the older XBR Trinitrons with RGB. They look way better and have far fewer jaggies on 240p content that the later FV line.
The only advantage of the FV310 is the high voltage regulator.
I like 25"+ Wells Gardner K7000 monitors best for old arcade games . My 20" Ikegami TM20-90RH broadcast monitor is the best I've ever seen for 240p image quality. Old games just look better on it's curved CRT than any of the PVM or BVMs.
BTW, I'd be getting divorced if I bought as many CRT monitors and TVs as you. Your garage looks like Best Buy in 1997.
