I've been chasing retro gaming perfection since 2013. Along the way I've learned a few things. I like to share stuff I've learned and to learn from you guys. Feel free to give dissenting opinions. Analog tech is a dying art and we can learn from each other.

Where i can buy one?
Try degaussing with the TV puilled forward, maybe not close enough do the the angle your holding it at plus the desk
Its 100+ pounds. HEAVY AF
I got a hold of one of these over the summer, me and one other guy moved it, and had I been 20 years older I probably would have had a heart attack. When I finally got it home and turned it on, I was blown away by the quality. I have a 24 inch wega, and this definitely puts it to shame.
hecho en mexico
lol, the disclaimers literally apply to everything. cars. homes. you name it.
Do you have the remote controller for your Toshiba?
Took me 3 years, but finally got a KV27FV310. Need to do some further testing, but so far it’s incredible. Aside from the ridiculously stacked inputs, it has a fancy volt regulator that apparently cleans up any noise and blooming. I’ll try for a recording in the coming weeks.
@RetrofIex I think the hype around "voltage regulator" is overblown. All crts made past 1980 have a voltage regulation circuit. Some better than others. I've never seen a 310 in person, but the images I seen online look really good. Looks like low end pvm quality. It would be cool If you could do a comparison video to another flatscreen sony.
@@riggel8804 the only other flat screen Sony Wega I have is a 20” FS100, so not a good comparison, but I see 27” and 32” FS120s from time to time. Not a bad idea! Coincidentally I also picked up a 20” Tau (CT-20SL14J) same week. Also has a really good picture, but some bowing in a couple corners.
7:45 A bit late to this video but I'd definitely be interested in hearing whatever you know about audio.
Better than JVC I'art? In what way?

I have a 8044q and a 1910 PVM from 1984. I'm trying to find a consumer TV that I like, what do you think I should look for? I'd stick to my 8044, but it's small and it has a slight burn-in, sadly.
@EverScrolls they are getting harder to find. I would try and get a sony, toshiba or panasonic with component video. The sonys and toshiba have superior tubes in there 32 and 36 inch models
@@riggel8804 How hard would you say hard? I still see some near me, but I'm from Cali.
@@EverScrolls cool. Pick em up and let me know how it goes
For me the component looks mich netter than RGB.
I just picked up a KV-36FS12 for 150 I was thinking about downsizing but what’s your thoughts?
@@TimelessKnowledge I like em big.
7:48 what specific adapter do you use to convert your PC to the CRT ? I have one that cost about $30 from RCA at Menards and I guess I grabbed one of the higher quality ones, but problem is I cannot get a sound signal via the HDMI to Composite signal despite it showing up on the CRT. Also dang that JVC looks good, I wish I had that one!

@@riggel8804 Thank you very much!
I know this video is a few years old but any chance you could do a video via SNES showing the 240pSuite Rom on the TV’s shown at 4:27 and such? I am curious to compare how my Sony Trinitron Wega 32 inch looks in terms of sharpness because the one I found on the curb has some minor geometry issues on the left edge but it’s super clear when it comes to playing SNES games via Composite cable. When I used the 240p suite for sharpness and other tests almost everything looks insanely good for a CRT, so I am wondering if it’s just my TV or if others in the Wega line have similar quality too. Might make a good video idea showing comparisons for each CRT you own just to demonstrate what their differences can be. I have no idea how a shadow mask or aperture grill varies in terms of looks for video games.
Words cannot describe my frustration, confusion (I thought I was pretty good at Street Fighter at the time) and just disdain for the American version of this in arcades. The only joy I got outta it was playing against the boys at the arcade. Even now I'll play it once in a while, few times a year, and compare it to the Japanese version and it's so unbelievably, inconceivably easier on Japanese that it boggles my mind it was ever released in this state. Even on the hardest difficulty with the Japanese version I can still clear it with 1-3 credits. American? I'm lucky to get by with 40+ unless I'm actively trying to cheese the hell outta the AI. Still love it, but it's the definition of love/hate lol.
@@A-1-Sawce yeah it went too far. I like to play arcade games for 1cc because of the difficulty but the American version of ST went too far. You can not oki/jump in on nock down on the majority of characters and you can not punish with combos the majority of the time. This doesn't leave you with a lot to do. The game is my favorite to play competitively and I still play on and offline
Have had mine for around 8 years now and it has been great. Did side by side comparison with the 14" PVM I had at the time and ended up selling the PVM because I can't be hunched over a small screen like that anymore. Have most of the consoles going through a gcompsw and using HDretrovision cables for the RGB modded/output consoles. The geometry on mine isn't too bad, just a small wave at the bottom center you can see in text box outlines or banners, but it doesn't pull your attention away during gameplay.
@@FireMrshlBill central geometry waves can be corrected by turning the geometry rings behind the convergence rings
@@riggel8804 Maybe one of these days I will open it up to give it a clean and do that. Luckily it isn't enough to bother me, I'd have to point it out to someone not looking for it., luckily. Not sure if it is worth doing any preventative cap swaps on it. Maybe I'll be more inclined to do it after I fix the 20" Samsung I took while clearing out my parents' house. It has RGB lines at the top of it, assuming it was a cap issue but need to figure that out or give it away to someone that will want to fix and use it and not scrap it.
Component looks better here, richer colour saturation and more contrasty.
it's not a Riggel video if your wife doesn't flex on us that she went to Japan. Great 1cc Man, i closed the book on the Punisher as well after it took me a month to clear it (a bit young and new to 1cc these monstrous old school Arcade games ha)
Thanks bud. I love me some capcom beat em ups. I know punisher is well regarded. I might play thorough that one some day. I'm working on a Streets of Rage Hardest right now. It's pretty fun.
I have looked everywhere. How in the heck do you get those scan lines up on the screen? the red/white box? I'd love to have that up and finally take a few hours and set my 24-inch Sony Trinitron perfectly. great vid!

My question is can you upgrade a CRT TV from composite and s video to component mode?
@@jrudymorganclark2072 never heard of it. Might as well rgb mod it at that point. You could rgb mod it and get a component transcoder. I think this is what native component tvs basically do. They just have a built in transcoder.
Or can I mount a component RCA into my TV for instead of the composite input jacks? @@riggel8804
Excellent
@@CozyCathodes thank
@@CozyCathodes that rca front projector you got is pretty cool. Where you able to squeeze any performance out of it?
@@riggel8804 wow, yeah I got it pretty close, sad my house is only so big, it's hiding out in the garage until I am confident I can actually do a thorough resto on it. You know, the good old rotation game with the collection. I got the convergence as close as I can on it, but the specs on the components are bad and at the least needs to be recapped. I could do a whole video on setting convergence, 8 or so manual pots for everything under the sun... btw your vids are awesome bro, really got me into this hobby.
im a bit late but that Sony XBR looks fantastic, the curved screen..
This is the best and easy tutorial to adjust your trinitron crt, don't look more
You ever dabbled in the Panasonic Tau line before? I heard that even Wega fanboys have alot of respect for the Tau’s slot mask tube and overall build quality. I noticed a 20SL14J up for sale for a reasonable price, but I have a 20” FS100 already.
@@RetrofIex the curved Panasonic I have looks phenomenal but i never could find a tau. Actually, I tell a lie. I found 2 taus cheap but neither had component so I passed in them

Regret selling my dads curved panasonic. Got a Trinitron for cheap, looks great but the panasonic tube was my childhood
JVC tubes made by LG electronics, it's basically written on red label. Looks like good budget sets. Maybe there were no high end shadow mask sets in us? Grundigs, b&o, some Philipa models and others
@@BoxLuxik toshiba and Panasonic made bad ass shadow masks in the usa. I got a couple reviews on them. The majority of jvc tubes I have seen are mediocre
Great video. I recently sold a nice component Trinitron because it was too large for me and instead am using my basic 13" CRT I found off the street. It looks fantastic, has great geometry and is a much more manageable size. I'm interested in doing the RGB mod because it's composite only and I think that's the only valid reason to do this RGB mod. It's a lot easier to find a composite CRT in the US than one with component, especially small TVs. But even if I don't do the mod, my tv still looks pretty great.
@@Matt_Sorensen some tvs look wack imo with an rgb mod. If its an inferior tube you get a screen door pattern when you feed it a clean signal like rgb or component. Inferior tubes look better with composite imo. However if your tube is good i.e. Sony then it will look good in rgb. Smaller tubes don't suffer from screen dooring in general so your probably fine.
@@riggel8804 that's good to know, thanks! If it the mod did look bad I could always just not use it, right?
@@Matt_Sorensen depends on the mod. Some disable composite but some leave it intact. You're probably fine since the tv is 13 inches. Even if it screen doors you probably won't notice it. What type of tv is it?
@@riggel8804 I'd probably do the mod with a switch to turn on the RGB input if possible. The tv is an Apex AT1308, silver budget CRT but actually the picture and geometry is really nice.
@@Matt_Sorensen never heard of that tv. some of the "budget tvs" have really good tubes in them. Main thing is that you like it. If you can put in a toggle switch you don't have anything to lose...unless you fuck up the mod.
I had that question too, why RGB modding a component tv, well thanks for clarifying it really makes sense

I found my KV-27FS12 about a year ago and recently tested it out with a VGA/SCART to component video transcoder. I can't get over how incredibly razor sharp it is, with colors and black levels that just make the picture pop too! It's probably one of the best CRT's I've ever used. I connected it to a vintage 80's computer that outputs 640x200 and its text, windows and icons are sharp enough I could've used it for word processing or BBSing back in the day! With that in mind, it gives you an idea how sharp it is for arcade emulation and game consoles. Absolutely looks PVM quality!

It is crazy how good 240p gaming looks on that Trinitron with basic composite cables, the scanlines are the best I've seen on a real TV set. And I know it says Sony Wega but I guess we were supposed to be pronouncing it Vega lol, my Trinitron is supposedly a Wega but it doesn't say Wega on the TV set, which is confusing. 275 pounds??
