    You may feel the same way, but I realized that outside of a small age demographic of mid to late 30s, maybe early 40s… literally nobody I know in my family, or at work, give two shits about CRT televisions and look at me like I’m nuts for having 5. LOL. I will always love these relics for the nostalgia they bring me, but good lord, anybody over the age of 43 and under the age of 33 dont care about CRTs whatsoever. I guess that leaves us in a very special niche group clinging onto those carefree special moments as kids and teens playing our videogames.

    Ok so on Sunday, I came across a rummage sale in the parking lot of a local church and miraculously they actually had a CRT up for $5. Its a silver flat 20” Philips 20PT6245. It’s a 2005 build so you can easily see they were copying the 20” Trinitron Wega set of the same size. I had high hopes for this one because it has component out and S-video out, which you don’t see too often on a 20” set. I brought it home and fired up the standard Super Mario Bros. homescreen test. Immediately I noticed that the A/V output stretched the top of the picture deep into overscan territory, so my thought was that a capacitor on the vertical deflection circuit probably was on the verge of failure. I played through it for a few min and then the TV powered itself off. Probably reached the point of capacitor failure and that did a switchoff effect on the power supply. When I turned it back on, it doesn’t recognize the A/V or Component inputs anymore. Only S-Video and RF analog channels. I am guessing that something failed regarding the video output and it was shared with the component video out. Long story short, I played it via RF and it looked perfectly fine, just with a dirty RF quality…. I am not sure if I should bother keeping it though if it now lacks A/V.

    Finally got the HD retrovision SNeS component cable set up on my Philips and the color richness really took me back, But the one thing I learned is that when you toggle between composite and component inputs on the same TV, it will shift the horizontal positioning a bit off center… really frustrating but maybe it’s time to calibrate the screen to favor component and say to hell with composite.

    • @riggel8804
      @riggel8804  Год назад

      You might be able to calibrate the component input separate from the composite input. I've seen that before.

    Hauptsächlich wegen der Thomson ICC Bildröhre, deren Farbdarstellung einfach wärmend, genial und anders ist.
    Mein HD-CRT macht über Composite keine Probleme und bringt alles mit 780p super auf den Schirm.

    Hey whats your opinion of Sanyo sets? I literally just picked up a 32” Sanyo DS31520 from a curb as I was driving home today with the family. I also saw they dumped a Sanyo silver 20” Flat set, but it did not power on and I didnt feel like troubleshooting… so just threw it back to the curb. Overall it seems decent. For a 32” set it wasnt as heavy as I expected. Its limited to S-video and Composite but the geometry was shockingly very good. Colors are a tad weak but probably some menu adjustments will help.

    • @riggel8804
      @riggel8804  Год назад

      I have no experience with sanyo.
      At this point I think any decent crt is a good crt. They are getting harder and harder to find. If it looks good to you rock it.
      S video is almost as good as component/rgb. I got no problem playing on s video. Composite hurts my eyes a little bit, even with a comb filter.
      If the colors are wimpy the tube is probably tired. Nothing you can do about that. You can turn the color, contrast and brightness up a tiny bit to compensate bit don't expect too much.

      @@riggel8804 wise words. Yes, I find at this point in time with television history, all CRTs are very old, so its a battle of attrition. Branding isnt mattering as much because even top of the line sets that are old and worn out will look bad. If you have a cheap Funai made set with very low hours, it will probably look better than a worn out old Trinitron if it’s never been serviced. Very few people know how to rejuvenate a CRT and make repairs on a component level as you need the proper equipment, training knowledge and ability to identify the bad components and correctly order a replacement. Nobody really can do that except a very small group of people. I now have 6 sets because over the years, CRTs will become as rare and hard to find as antiques from over 100 years ago.

They do a quick google search for, "crt" repair and when nothing comes up they give up. I think retro tech and retro rgb have confused a lot of people too.
      Most music shops know of a board tech that can fix there PA equipment. There are also lots of techs that advertise for repairing old hifi equipment. Any board tech can probably repair a crt.

    Were you ever interested in adding a JVC I’Art at any point? Got lucky and an estate sale is allowing early purchase and they have a minty looking 27” JVC I’Art up for $20. Cant miss out there. I heard they are basically on par with a Wega.

      I had a IArt in good condition and I took it to the dump. I hated it. It had component video but it actually looked better with composite. When the image was cleaned up with component you could really see how inferior the tube was. the vertical dark lines where as prominent as the scanlines. It looked like a screen door. I know that other people like the iart. I am curious to hear what your experince was with the iart. Did you pick one up?

    • @RetrofIex
      @RetrofIex 11 месяцев назад

      @@riggel8804 Wow, interesting to hear. So I usually do a little google research on the model before I commit to buy. This particular I’Art is a AV-27F577. Several different redditors warned to stay clear because this model upscales 240p to 480i, which will effectively kill scanlines and give it a messier look, in addition to several frames of input lag. I ended up turning it down, although it sold within 24 hours so it wouldn’t of mattered anyways. I often hear the D-Series is a better option for 240p gaming but people are often fanboys of particular brands and models, so will probably hear I’Art fanboys saying otherwise. My Apex PF3225 with the Toshiba CRT would likely have had a better picture anyways. Another funny thing, a 20” i’Art went up on Ebay in a neighboring town about 10 min up the road… the shipping cost of it was $400 for some strange reason. I contacted the seller, which was a local warehouse, and they were adamant that all sales must be done through ebay and local pickup was not an option. It was really weird.

    Hey do you know if there is a solution to white colors that have a bit of a grayish look to them? Like they don’t have that bright white pop and have a more muted almost grayish mix look to them? Contrast increase isnt really doing anything. Anything specific in the service menu that may help make the white pop more?

    Hey dude, hope you’re doing good these days. I was pleasantly surprised that my 32” Flat Apex had a Toshiba picture tube, had to verify the CRT in the service manual and figured out from the model/part number A80LTM350X10. Initially I thought it was a Trinitron clone but I guess this tells me it’s actually a 32AF42 clone. I was just curious if it had a good tube and didnt want to bother opening it up again, but could at least match up the part number from just looking into the vents with a flashlight. Picture is pretty good. Did you like the Toshiba tubes overall? I believe its a slot mask variety. Good colors and thick ass scanlines.

      @@riggel8804 Hey I appreciate that dude. You’ve always been one of my favorite CRT retro gaming enthusiasts because you speak to the average gamer better than someone more established like Steve Nutter/Retro Tech, he tends to get overly technical and doesnt have that chill vibe. So you will never hear anybody ever go Yeah you gotta go hunt down an Apex PF3225. It was marketed as a budget friendly competitor to the more expensive Wega or Toshiba AF, but it’s got a very impressive build to it: One side stereo A/V, Two S-Video inputs with shared composite, an A/V stereo output and that ever important Component with it’s own input. The fact it has a Toshiba made tube is important. I am sure if you play it next to something like a 32AF42/43 it may not look identical but it’s definitely worthy of hanging in that league… and I got this one for free as a donation on Offerup. Hopefully you may return to do another CRT overview/review type video. Just to add, I learned that the picture tube makes the picture. You get a smaller toshiba 20AF42, it has an orion picture tube, it’s gonna look like an orion which makes the Toshiba branding pointless. I figured that was Toshiba cheaping out on their manufacturing costs by outsourcing their tubes to Orion. You have a sony tube it will look like a sony, you have a toshiba tube it will look like a toshiba, etc
