Games Sampler 2 - Windows 95 (Intro, tour, and some secrets)

- Game Sampler 2 for Windows 95 is a demo disc developed by Monolith for Microsoft back in 1996. It begins with an opening sequence showing something that looks like the Duke3D symbol, on fire flying through space. As it continues, some dudes in ships and some aliens in ships fight it out.Eventually, after lots of com screaming and cheering, it's time to let the mothership have it!
You are then brought, to what I am lead to believe, Station X. Where you can walk around and look at a few things, check the scenery, finds secrets, throw them Duke3D coins, and of course play the old demos.
Even though I poke fun at the ridiculousness of the entire experience, I actually had a lot of fun playing this when I was a kid. Being nine years old I of course was very limited to what was available to play, and this came free with our PC. So being able to roam around on a spaceship and play demos of various games was rather cool back then.
Although, while nostalgia rushes through me while playing this, it is rather unplayable for the most part. Considering i'm using Windows 7 and this is 95, I am surprised it even works at all. Screen flickers, crashes, extreme fps drops, and the worst part of all...the demos don't work. But whatever, I had a lot of fun looking at this again for the first time in probably 15 years, so it was well worth the problems. And of course the best part is I get to share it with everyone! :)

Holy crap.. Me and my brother's childhood.
Hi Phantom strider! I love your videos! :)
I'm the Software Test Engineer at Microsoft (at the time) that had to test this piece of crap nightmare. Most of the games were barely out of alpha, half the developers wouldn't fix their bugs (3DO especially). The only plus side about working on this project was that I dealt with Monolith daily, and they were fracking awesome to work with. It's frustrating when your managers force a deadline, and nobody (Third Parties) are willing to abide by their contracts and fix their shyte. Worst project ever. I hope I never get roped into something like that again. *ok, I'm done venting*
I'm sorry the project made you miserable. I hope you understood what an impact it made on the developing minds of the kids who played it. My sister and I played these demos until the software updates made it impossible to open.
Wow, cool! Wat did you all test while at microsoft? Did you have anything to do with the original 'Games for windows 95' sampler cd by Monolith? That one had the best presentation in my opinion (a really cool 3D spacestation that wasn't so dark).
Thank you for being a part of my childhood. This sampler is amazing. Me and lots of other kids were happy because of this!
I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS FOREVER OMG YOU HAVE SAVED ME
This is amazing. We spent so many hours playing the games this disc without ever getting bored, incredible when you think that they were just demos.
Its so nice to know me and many others shared the same child hood memories :)
Pretty inspired that the menu for the Game Sampler 95 disc was designed like an interactive level from a Marathon game. I don't think I ever had a such a disc in my childhood, but I think I would've loved the hell out of it if I had. Just the idea of giving you an interactive environment you could explore in the first person, and choosing which demos you want to install in an interactive gallery is mind-blowing. Those were the days when adding fun interactivity and exploration in games, particularly on CD-ROM games, were a big novelty. It felt like CD-ROM games could do all sorts of things, whether it was making computer games more cinematic, more interactive, or more immersive. Even the textures and effects used in this interactive environment showcased what CD-ROM Windows computers were capable of.
Amazing they put so much work into the whole 3D animated intro, and the station you could explore the whole thing in first person, just for a demo disc! Those were the days!
I was just trying to explain to my 11 year old the joy that this demo CD was to me at her age in the 90s, its so awesome to see this again
Oh god the nostalgia, it hurts. Deathdrome and War Wind were my favorites, and I played a lot of Road Rash and Fire Fight too. Had the full version of Monster Truck Madness.
I played the shit out of Game Sampler 1 back in '96. Damn good times.
This is the first time I'm seeing the stuff from Sampler 2.
OMG. I legit wrote a short story about the intro for one of my classes in 5th grade. NOSTALGIA OVERLOAD.
Man... the nostalgia is real. Simpler times indeed. (Basically my childhood right here.)
Played all the demo's over and over for couple years as a kid, didn't have anything else lol. Man this takes me back haha
Oh to explore this space station once more just for old time's sake.... it's been almost 30 *FUCKING* years since last I visited.....sigh....I miss being a kid in the 90s....
Lazy Game Reviews reminded me (after most of my life) what this shareware pack is called. So glad you made this video. The memories are too much to handle. Now there's only 1 games pack I don't remember.
Didnt know LGR did a video on this! I still have our CD somewhere lol
Definitely had this specific demo disc when I was maybe 11-12 years old and our mom bought her first PC. Or at least one very similar to it. I played Monster Truck Madness, Road Rash, and even the Diablo demo nonstop for the longest time.
I spent too long playing the demos on here, thanks for the nostalgia
So much nostalgia!
Oh dear gosh, I remember having that CD for our old PC! *_* So many memories! I liked exploring the HUB menu and checking out every game. I like the HUB music too. One thing I forgot was you could throw the logo all around the place. XD
Road Rash, War Wind and DeathDrome were my favorites.
Maaaaaaaaaan, this brings me back.
love it,!!! thanks for sharing this piece of history.
FUCK.. I've been trying to find this for ages!.. It was my CHILDHOOD! AWESOME UPLOADER
This music is the one I was listening to when I was 4. I'm listening to it now, i'm 21. If this doesn't play on my funeral, I'm not coming
Wow, I didn't expect to see my comment here after 4 years. Yeah, I'm 25 now and still listening.
@@stam1ska and still after 3 months!! 😆
@@1989Ezal wow, not really, but you just gave me a good reason to do so :)
@@stam1ska it's a damn good song.. amazing for a game demo disc from 95. anyone know if there is a video of the song only? and/or what the song is called?
29, tried different sf2 soundfonts to check which is the best for this track and odysseys, turns out standard Windows DLS is the most balanced but a lot of SC-55 based sound pretty interesting
fun part: the good guys space ships can be flown in Microsoft's Hellbender's single/multiplayer demo/retail disc
whoa , i have other sample cd, i never foud what the name was or how to find it , until now. thank you man. oh the nostagia . those were the first games that i ever play. i dunno what to say , god bless you random people of the internet
YES YES YES YES! Thank you I think I may have found my childhood. Or parts of it, I need to see all the games to confirm this but thank you.
This did not have everything, but most of them, I played another demo disks where you had little orange guys that would say " Aaalrighty then" I think, and had little weird nerf guns, it was like a strategy game, and another one where you where a fox or something with gold and it was 2d, sorry if that isn't much info.
Well, this just in for Andres Mercury... And the A-Head Mix.
I had the sampler 1... been looking for this for a while lol, lots of childhood memories.
This is my childhood right there 🙌🏼
This is where I discovered Diablo. Bought the game the next day. Too bad Blizzard sold out so bad.
this was amazing. i still have the CD.
The deepest cobwebs of my brain have been awakened.
"WHOOOO! All right, now it's time for the big payoff!"
"This one's for the whole team, baby!"
Monster thing - 😨!!!
i remember monster truck madness running SO SLOW
i literally spent hours playing at: road rash, diablo and war wind omg. in my opinion the top 3 games of this cd
Yu A. War wind.....
Hi! I used to play this artsy type of game on Windows 98 during elementary school. I clearly remember that there wasn't any storyline involved. All you did was choose a background and stickers then once you were done you pressed a play button. The play button would then make the screen go into full screen mode and you could see the stickers moving and making sounds. I don't know if this detail will help but I distinctly remember one particular background. It was a haunted house theme so the stickers that you could choose were only Halloween types such as witches (who were on brooms so if you put them in the sky they would cackle and zoom around on the brooms) and windows that would light up in an eerie green color accompanied by an almost lightsaber sounding effect. I think there was a moon sticker that had a scary face on it and when the play button was pushed it looked like a regular moon then suddenly it would turn and you would see this scary face. There was also a farm and Wild West background that had stickers that went with those themes. Also, I'm not too sure if this detail will help but I believe this game was apart of a packet of multiple games that had Zeek the Geek and Neko (windows 95 version).
Was it set in hollywood and you could choose a fat guy??
Welcome to Station X, once inhabited by the most amazing DOSgames...
I still got the actual CD, and it still works... some of the game also still works without needing any work done to them prior to playing.
I had no idea the demo game sampler disc has a sequel.
fuck, I only had game sampler 1.. wud be soo cool to have this as a child
flight unlimited was the one I played the shit out of...I think this is the one i was looking for after all
I remember this CD coming with my friend's purchase of Sound Blaster 16 for some reason. Not even a microsoft product, but I guess they were advertising multimedia in general. I loved this CD. Bought all the games that were present as demos.
I swear this thing had a demo for 3DO's "Killing Time" on it too.
I'm remembering that too ...
OH! they made another one! I only had the first.
Where can I find this music it sounds great
Damn, this was so long ago!
I remember playing the shit out of Diablo and Road Rash. I also used to type cuss words in You Don't Know Jack to see what he'll say.
Ah yes, cussing in You Don't Know Jack games is fun, lots of fun. I actually have the full version of the original game.
+Nick Chua that was probably DeathDrome.
So this is the kind of stuff that Monolith used to do before Blood, Shogo and Fear. Interesting.
haha memories ... brilliant
Christ I feel old...
Hey man do you know the name of the song of the neverhood but the song of the demo, because in the final edition they put anothwr music.
Wow I almost have all the full games on this Games Sampler CD.Just missing Drowned God that's it.

I don't remember: "Ravage D.C.X." "Drowned God" "Decathlon" and "You Don't Know Jack". Maybe I had a different version
@Raiyne123 Oh I realised it is Deathdrome! :)
I certainly remember the coin, Monster Truck Madness and You Don't Know Jack... but there was also this futuristic sci-fi shooter game where you controlled a coloured car in 3rd person in an arena styled deathmatch. Does anyone remember the name of that game?
Death Drome by Viacom
do you know were i could download this i miss all these games on this disc please tell me
Why wasn't Duke Nukem 3D included?
the music is so much nicer on this sampler. specially from 03:45
You are so hot! Whats your name on insta?
Theres one by directx that had the same setup, fuck me but I still havent found it again
This. This is the disk that began a two decade long love affair with the Diablo franchise.
Bought with money stolen from my dad.
Youa Numbah Oneah Racist the best games when i had this disc was road rash and monster truck madness. that's my opinion.
CAROLINA CRUSHER IS DOIN' IT IN THE AIR!!!
Youa Numbah Oneah Racist 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂.
This version of Diablo also had an exploitable bug. Opened the inventory, then paused the game, then selected an item and drop it in the world, then put it back in the inventory, then unpause. The item would duplicate. Worked with gold and everything. I was so disappointed as a kid when this didn't work in the full game!
And then you discovered there was a duplication bug that was almost as easy, or given some lag online, even easier, and all was well.
:) This is where i first played DOOM.
where could i get this shit!?!?!?!? I GOT THE FIRST ONE I NEED THE SECOND ONE!!!
